Description
(54) MICROTITRATION PLATE
(71) We, DYNATECH HOLDINGS
LIMITED, a Guernsey Company of Abacus
Chambers, Smith Street, St. Peter Port,
Guernsey, Channel Islands, do hereby declare the invention for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is performed to be particularly described in and by the following statement:
This invention relates to a microtitration or microtest plate, for example, for use in conducting body fluid investigations, such as complement fixation tests, hemagglutinition tests, hemagglutinition inhibition tests and metabolic inhibition tests and immunochemical and both isotopic and non-isotopic immuno assays. More particularly, the invention relates to improvements in or modifications of the invention disclosed in our copending patent application No. 30543/77 (Serial No. 1 584 589).
Our aforementioned application describes and claims a microtitration plate comprising a tray formed as a one piece moulding and having a multiplicity of compartments arranged in rows on the tray, and a multiplicity of individual wells, each well being supported in an upright position in a compartment. The tray may be moulded from foam plastics material and the wells from a rigid material such as P.V.C. or polystyrene. In one embodiment, the bottoms of the compartments have holes therethrough to enable readings to be taken through the well bases, which may be flat, conical or hemispherical, from the bottom of the tray.
Although such microtitration plates have a greater degree of versatility than other plates known to the applicants, they do not lend themselves to rapid assembly of the trays and wells.
The present invention has for an object to alleviate this problem and, to this end, the invention consists in a microtitration plate as claimed in our aforementioned application, wherein at least some of the wells are integrally connected with one another. For example, the wells may be integrally moulded and be interconnected by means of stems, webs, strips or the like of the moulding material, such as, mould flashings extending between the individual wells.
The invention enables the wells to be more easily manipulated and more rapidly fitted into and removed from the compartments in the tray.
The wells may be integrally moulded in any convenient formation, for example, in a single row or a plurality of rows connected to form a strip or block of wells.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing which is a plan view of a microtitration plate according to the invention.
The microtitration plate shown in the drawing comprises a tray 1 moulded from polystyrene foam or flexible silicone rubber and having a tray recess 2. The tray recess 2 has a multiplicity of compartments 4 arranged in twelve rows with eight compartments in each row and defined by rows and columns of upstanding posts 6a and 6b integrally moulded with the base of the recess. Supported in the compartments 4 are a multiplicity of wells 5 made of glass, rigid
P.V.C. or polystyrene, for example, for receiving a sample of a patient's body fluid to be tested. All the wells 5 are moulded integrally with one another and are interconnected by means of stems 5a formed, for example by mould flashings. Thus, all the individual wells can be simultaneously fitted into the compartments of the tray recess 2 so that assembly of the tray and wells can be simply and rapidly achieved. The stems 5a may easily be broken to enable one or more wells to be separated from each other when required.
Alternatively, the wells may be integrally formed in single rows or in a plurality of rows connected to form a strip of wells.
One or more rows of the wells may be sealed by at least one adhesive cover strip disposed across the tops of the wells, as described in our aforementioned application. The or each cover strip may have perforations around the individual wells. Alternatively, one or more rows of wells may be sealed by plugs carried by a cover strip to seal one or more strips of wells, the or each cover strip preferably having perforations around the plugs.
