Abstract

The kit can be assembled to form models, in particular vehicle models. For instance, the driver's cab of a lorry can be formed from correspondingly shaped components. The side walls of the model are formed by rectangular panels (2a, 2b, 2c) having on their inner surfaces undercut connecting studs (5). In the region of their edge portion, the side parts (1a, 1b) are provided with corner flanges (3) which protrude at right angles and from the end edges of which there extend undercut recesses (4), into which the connecting studs (5) of the panels (2a, 2b, 2c) engage. Since the corner flanges (3) are set back by the thickness of the panels (2a, 2b, 2c) from the outer edge of the side parts (1a, 1b), a flush termination of the outer edges, the side parts and panels is produced. <IMAGE>

Description

(54) IMPROVEMENTS IN AND RELATING TO TOY CONSTRUCTION KITS (71) I, ARTUR FISCHER, a German citizen, of Weinhalde 34, D-7244 Waldachtal 3, (Tumlingen), Germany, do hereby declare the invention, for which I pray that a patent may be granted to me, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention relates to a toy model and to a toy construction kit for forming the model.
Normally, toy construction kits contain parts which are neutral in shape, that is to say they do not correspond to a specific toy model either as regards their profile or as regards their aesthetic appearance. However, construction kits for small children are known in which relatively large construction parts are assembled to form a finished model.
Although the assembly of toy models is thereby simplified to a considerable extent, there is very little opportunity of varying the toy models.
The present invention provides a toy model comprising a plurality of interlocking constructional components, the components including a plurality of rectangular panels and a plurality of shaped panels, the profile of each shaped panel corresponding to the profile of the article being reproduced by the model, wherein each shaped panel is provided with a number of flanges, each flange projecting at right angles to the plane of the panel and following the contour of a respective outer edge portion of the shaped panel, and wherein connection means are provided on the flanges and on the rectangular panels, the connection means being such that the rectangular and shaped panels can be interlocked, by relative sliding movement between respective rectangular panels and flanges, to form a hollow shell-like structure with two of the shaped panels facing each other and with two or more of the rectangular panels extending between the facing panels.
This model is extremely simple to construct and is especially suitable, therefore, for children of pre-school age.
The flanges permit not only an invisible corner joint between the shaped members and the rectangular panels, but also contribute to making the model rigid and stable.
Preferably, each flange is set back from its respective outer edge portion of the shaped panel by an amount corresponding to the thickness of a rectangular panel. In this way a flush joint can be obtained between the outer edges of the shaped panels and the visible faces of the rectangular panels.
The present invention also provides a toy construction kit including a plurality of constructional components for forming the model according to the invention.
The model can, for example, be a, or part of a vehicle structure. If, for example, the model is intended to reproduce the shape and appearance of a driver's cab of a lorry, two-shaped panels can be designed in accordance with the profile and appearance of the two sides of the cab and assembled together using the rectangular panels to form the roof, the back and the front of the cab. The width of the cab may be varied by varying the length of the rectangular panels.
Since the rectangular panels have a neutral shape they can be used in the construction of any toy model. Only the shaped panels are specifically designed for a particular shape of toy model. A kit for constructing a given number of models of different shapes would need to include, therefore, several rectangular panels and a commensurate number of different types of shaped panels. Both the rectangular panels and the shaped panels are simple to manufacture and they occupy little space when packaged.
A toy model constructed in accordance with the invention will now be illustrated, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawing, the single figure of which shows an exploded view of the model.
Referring to the drawing, it will be seen that the model is intended to reproduce the shape and appearance of a driver's cab of a lorry.
The model cab is made up from two shaped side panels, aa and lb, and three rectangular panels, 2a, 2b and 2c. The side panels la and ib are intended to reproduce in the model the side profile of the lorry cab, whilst the rectangular panels 2a, 2b and 2c form the front, the back and the roof respectively of the cab.
Each shaped panel la and Ib is provided with a plurality of plate-like flanges 3, which project at right-angles to the panel and each of which follows the contour of a respective portion of the outer edge of the shaped panel.
Each flange 3 is provided with two undercut slots 4 which open into the free edge of the flange. In fact each flange could be formed with one or three or more such undercut slots 4.
Further, as will be seen from the drawing, each flange 3 is set back from the outer edge of its correspondingly shaped panel by a small amount which corresponds to the thickness of each of the rectangular panels 2a, 2b and 2c.
Each rectangular panel 2a, 2b and 2c is formed with a plurality of undercut or reentrant tenons 5 which extend from one of its faces.
Each tenon 5 is interlockable with a slot 4 by sliding it into the open end of the slot 4.
When the five panels have been assembled by interlocking the tenons and slots, it will be evident from the drawing that a shell-like structure is formed with the two shaped panels la, ib being arranged opposite to each other and with the rectangular panels 2a, 2b and 2c extending between those panels.
Because each flange 3 is set back from the outer edge of its shaped panel, when a rectangular panel is interlocked with the shaped panel by registration of the tenon and grooves, the rectangular panel will lie flush with the outer edge of the shaped panel.
WHAT I CLAIM IS: l. A toy model comprising a plurality of interlocking constructional components, the components including a plurality of rectangular panels and a plurality of shaped panels, the profile of each shaped panel corresponding to the profile of the article being reproduced by the model. wherein each shaped panel is provided with a number of flanges, each flange projecting at right-angles to the plane of the panel and following the contour of a respective outer edge portion of the shaped panel, and wherein connection means are provided on the flanges and on the rectangular panels, the connection means being such that the rectangular and shaped panels can be interlocked by relative sliding movement between respective rectangular panels and flanges, to form a hollow shelllike structure with two of the shaped panels facing each other and with two or more of the rectangular panels extending between the facing panels.
2. A toy model as claimed in claim 1, in which each flange is provided with one or more undercut slots.
3. A toy model as claimed in claim 2, in which each rectangular panel is provided with one or more undercut tenons the or each of which projects from one of its faces, the or each tenon being interlockable with each of the said slots.
4. A toy model as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 3, in which each flange is set back from its respective outer edge portion of the shaped panel by an amount corresponding to the thickness of a rectangular panel.
5. A toy model substantially as hereinbefore described, with reference to and as illustrated by the accompanying drawing.
6. A toy construction kit including a plurality of constructional components for forming a toy model as claimed in any one of
