Description

(54) DETACHABLE JOINT ASSEMBLY FOR CONNECTING A SNOOD TO A LINE (71) We, O. MUSTAD & SON A.S., a company organized and existing under the laws of Norway, of Mustads vei 1, Oslo 2, Norway, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention relates to a detachable joint assembly for connecting a snood to a line. Fishing lines, particularly long lines normally have the snoods permanently fixed to the line. This makes handling of the line cumbersome and time consuming, particularly because the fishermen have to take great care not to get the fishing hook tangled with the line. The present invention concerns a simplified arrangement for handling and storing a fishing line and snoods.
Many types of detachable snoods are known, but only a few have any practical value. Some employ a key hole slot into which the line is pressed and in which it is held by friction. Others are shaped in such a way that the line is forced into a Z-shaped pattern when the snood is pulled parallel to the line - thereby further locking the snood to the line. Such joints are usually made from steel wire, often stainless steel wire. The joints do not act as a swivel. If the line rotates the snoods are wound around the line which is highly undesirable and complicates the subsequent handling of the line.
Published Norwegian Patent Specification No. 1270/70 is an example of a kind of joint where the snoods are fixed to the line by means of a clip and are intended to be stripped off when the line is hauled onboard.
Norwegian Patent No. 2366/68 and corresponding British Patent No. 1,225,769 on the other hand shows ajoint with a built in swivel motion. This arrangement however, does not lend itself readily to automatic de tachment and attachment of a snood to a line.
According to the invention, there is provided a detachable joint assembly for connecting a snood to a line, which joint comprises a first part having spaced flanges and which can be fixed on a line to form a sleeve thereon, a second part which can be mounted on said sleeve between said flanges to form a tubular member rotatably mountec on said sleeve, and a connecting part for fixing to a snood, said tubular member or said connecting part, respectively, being provided with a stud like projection having two small protuberances aligned in a direction across the stud, one protuberance on each side thereof, and said connecting part, or said tubular part, respectively formed as, or providing, an elastically deformable ring element adapted to be a snap fit on said stud.
An advantage of the invention is that it provides a joint which can be readily detached and attached in a mechanical way.
A further advantage is that it provides a joint which acts as a good swivel and is at the same time easy to detach and attach automatically, permitting the use of a small and compact semi-automatic machine for handling of the line.
Embodiments of the invention will now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 shows perspective views of a joint assembly embodying the invention and of elements of such assembly, Figure 2 is a side view of the joint assembly of Figure 1, Figure 3 is an end view of the assembly of Figure 1, Figure 4 is a plan view of apparatus for detaching the parts of the assembly of Figure l,and Figure 5 is a perspective view of a second embodiment.
Referring to Figure 1 , a detachable joint between the snood and the line consisting of a sleeve 1, a stud 2 with knobs 4 and an elastic ring 3. The ring 3 is prevented from being pulled over the knobs 4 on the stud 2 by means of the snood due to the special shape of the ring such that the force acting on the ring is at a point well to the side of its centre causing a twisting moment, see Figure 2 which tends to lock the ring in position on the stud. If the ring should be pulled over one of the knobs, see Figure 3, then the force from the snood will act diagonally to lock the ring in position under the opposite knob to stop the ring from being pulled loose.
Figure 4 shows an example of an apparatus for detaching automatically the snood from the line. The ring 3 rests against two flanges while the stud 2 is pressed through the ring.
This apparatus comprises two spring loaded wheels one of which 5 is shaped as a line hauler sheave with flanges 11 for supporting the ring 3, and with sufficient room for the sleeve 1 and the stud 2 to be pressed into the wedge shaped groove 6 with the ring 3 retained by the flanges.
The stud 2 is pressed through the ring 3 by the spring loaded wheel 7 which has its periphery shaped to fit the curvature of the stud. Knobs and other obstructions in the line will pass unhindered because the wheel 7 will give away due to its spring loaded support. This apparatus can be linked with another apparatus which collects the detached snoods and accumulates them in such a way that subsequent handling is easily facilitated.
Figure 5 shows another embodiment, in which the rotating part of the joint is shaped with a flange having a hole 13 which acts in the same way as said ring of the embodiment of Figure 1, and the stud 14 with its projecting knobs acts as the fastener for the snood. The locking principle is the same as for the Figure 1 embodiment.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS: 1. A detachable joint assembly for connecting a snood to a line. which joint comprises a first part having spaced flanges and which can be fixed on a line to form a sleeve thereon, a second part which can be mounted on said sleeve between said flanges to form a tubular member rotatably mounted on said sleeve, and a connecting part for fixing to a snood, said tubular member or said connecting part, respectively, being provided with a stud like projection having two small protuberances aligned in a direction across the stud, one protuberance on each side thereof, and said connecting part, or said tubular part, respectively formed as or providing, an elastically deformable ring element adapted to be a snap fit on said stud.
2. A detachable joint assembly as claimed in Claim 1, wherein said connecting part is formed as said ring element and said second part includes two portions each shaped as one half of said stud like projection and provided with one of said protuberances, the arrangement being such that when the tubular member is mounted on the sleeve such portions co-operate to provide said stud which projects from the tubular member perpendicular to the axis of the tubular member.
3. A detachable joint assembly as claimed in Claim 1 , wherein said connecting part is formed with said stud like projection and said second part includes portions which co-operate when the tubular member is mounted on the sleeve to provide a flange projecting radially of the tubular member and formed with an aperture thereby to provide said ring element.
4. A detachable joint assembly as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the elastic ring element, when engaged on said stud, and the stud are capable of relative rotation around the axis of the stud and simultaneously said tubular member, when mounted on the sleeve, is capable of rotation around said sleeve.
5. A detachable joint assembly substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as illustrated in, Figures 1 to 3, or Figure 5 of the accompanying drawings.
6. A snood when connected to a line by a detachable joint assembly as claimed in any preceding claim.

3, then the force from the snood will act diagonally to lock the ring in position under the opposite knob to stop the ring from being pulled loose.
