158,304. Calthrop, E. B. Oct. 9, 1919. Hooks, automatic-release and safety. - A disconnectable coupling particularly for connecting a load to a parachute, comprises a U-shaped casing 1, Fig. 3, to which the parachute is permanently connected by a rope through an eye 2, and a pair of spring detents 7, pivoted at 6, and supporting a ring or the like 17 at the end of a load-rope. Disconnection is effected by depressing a slide 12 against a spring 16, thus disengaging the teeth 11 on the slide 12 from teeth 10 on levers 5 pivoted at 6. Inclines 15 on the slide 12 act on inclines 14 on the levers 5, which are thus forced outwards. The upper surfaces of the detents 7 are curved eccentrically to their pivots 6 so that the weight on the load-rope keeps the detents closed till the levers are forcibly swung out by hand, the detents being withdrawn into the casing and the load-rope thus released. In an automatic device, Fig. 5, the tension on the ropes causes a cap 21 to slide upwards on a casing 1, in which position it is retained by springs. This strains springs 7<3>. 25 which tend to withdraw the detents 7 into the casing. When the load touches the ground the weight is removed from the detents, which spring open and detach the parachute. In a modification, the cap 21 sliding upwards unsovers the upper ends of levers formed integrally with the detents 7; when the load touches the ground the detents are freed and a spring compressed between the upper ends of the levers separates them and releases the load-rope.
