Description

(54) SUPPORTING MEANS FOR GARMENT HANGER (71) We, RAINSFORDS PTY LIMITED, a Company incorporated under the laws of the State of New South Wales, of 200 Kingsgrove Road, Kingsgrove, New South Wales 2208 Australia, do hereby declare the invention for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention relates to supporting means for garment hangers of the type which incorporates, in place of the usual integral hanger hook, a hanger pin having a head formed on the outer end thereof which is adapted to be releasably mounted in a ring member which latter is non-removably supported on a hanging rail.Such a garment hanger and ring member assembly has been devised to prevent pilfering of garment hangers from hotels and motels for example, where the problem of pilfering can become serious.
Garment hanger and ring member assemblies of this kind are known and they present certain disadvantages in use. One known, non-removable ring means must be mounted on the rail before the rail is installed. Thus these known ring means are not suitable for use in existing clothes closets. Alternatively, where a ring member is provided which can be installed after the rail has been erected, such ring members lack appearance and do not necessarily prevent pilfering of complete coat hanger and ring member assemblies.
The object of the present invention is to provide means for supporting garment hangers, said means being formed as a ring adapted to be mounted on a hanging rail before or after the rail has been erected, and which when mounted on a rail, can only be removed by destroying the said ring whereby it is not then possible to pilfer a complete assembly of hanger and ring. The garment hanger includes a hanger pin having a head formed on the free end thereof which is removably mountable in the ring.
According to the invention, there is provided supporting means for a garment hanger including a hanger pin having a head formed on the free end thereof whereby said pin is removably mountable in the supporting means, said supporting means comprising: a ring formed in two parts as an upper and a lower part, each of said parts having a pair of diametrically opposed lugs formed thereon and the lower part having a hanger pin mounting arm formed thereon; the lugs on said upper part each having a passage formed therethrough and the lugs on the lower part each having a snap-in locking spigot formed thereon to register with the passages, said spigots and passages being dimensioned and arranged so that when the spigots are pressed into the passages they lock therein; said mounting arm having at least one slot formed therein adapted to receive the hanger pin.
An embodiment of the invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the ring, showing the two ring parts joined together.
Figure 2 is a sectional view on the plane Il-Il of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an exploded view of the components seen in Figure 2, and Figure 4 is a sectional view on the p]ane IV-IV of Figure 1.
Asillustrated, the ring parts 11 eachhave a pair of diametrically opposed lugs 12, 13 formed integrally thereon. Each lug 12 has a passage 14 formed therethrough and each passage 14 is slightly chamfered as at 15 at the lower end thereof and is counterbored as at 16 at the upper end thereof, for reasons to be explained. Each lug 13 has a locking spigot 17 formed integrally thereon, upstanding therefrom and located to register with a said passage 14. Each spigot 17 includes an integral buttonlike head 18.
The ring part 11 has an L-shaped, hanger pin-mounting arm formed integrally thereon consisting of a vertical limb 19 integral with a horizontal limb 20. The horizontal limb 20 has a slot 2 1 formed therethrough which registers and communicates with a keyhole slot 22 formed through the vertical limb 19.
The arrangement described permits the two halves 10, 11 to be fixed together on a hanging rail (not shown) prior to or after the rail has been erected. In use the suspending pin of the garment hanger, which has a button or part spherical head formed thereon, which is of lesser diameter than the hole in the keyhole slot 22, but is of larger diameter than the slot 21 in the limb 20 of the ring part 11, is passed through the keyhole slot 22 then is retained in engagement with the lower limb 20 of the ring part 11.
It is preferred to mould the ring parts 10, 11 from nylon as this material provides strength and resilience and also lends itself to massproduction moulding techniques. Also, the head 18 or each locking spigot 17 is preferably provided with a rounded or conical upper surface and a flat shoulder or under-surface 23.
This form of construction in nylon, imparts a degree of resilience to the edges 24 of these heads. The passages 14 into which they are pressed are preferably slightly tapered, to accentuate the jamming effect of the spigots 17 in the passages 14, and also to allow the heads 18 to snap into the counterbores 16 to prevent separation of ring part 11 from ring part 10.
Also it is preferred to provide an overall length dimension for the locking spigot heads 18 which allows the heads 18 thereof to be housed within or substantially within the exposed surfaces 25 of the ring parts 10 into which they are entered, so that they cannot be tampered with after assembly.
WIlAT WE CLAIM IS: Supporting means for a garment hanger including a hanger pin having a head formed on the free end thereof whereby said pin is removably mountable in the supporting means, said supporting means comprising: a ring formed in two parts as an upper and a lower part, each of said parts having a pair of diametrically opposed logs formed thereon and the lower part having a hanger pin mounting arm formed thereon; the lugs on said upper part each having a passage fouled therethrough and the lugs on the lower part each having a snap-in locking spigot formed thereon to register with the passages, said spigots and passages being dimensioned and arranged so that when the spigots are pressed into the passages they lock therein; said mounting arm having at least one slot formed therein adapted to receive the hanger pin.
2. Supporting means according to Claim 1, wherein the ring parts are moulded from nylon; wherein the passages in the upper ring part are each chamfered at one end, are tapered and are counterbored at the other end; and wherein the spigots each have a head formed thereon shaped to provide a rounded or conical upper surface and a flat shoulder or undersurface; whereby each said head has a degree of resilience to impart to the spigots a jamming effect in the passages and to allow each spigot head to snap into a said counterbore.
3. Supporting means according to Claim 2 wherein the said spigot heads are dimensioned to be housed substantially within the counterbores.
4. Supporting means according to Claim 1, wherein the mounting arm is L-shaped; and wherein one of said slots formed therethrough is a vertical keyhole slot formed vertically through one (vertical) limb of the L-shaped an, and a second said slot is formed through the other (horizontal) limb of the L-shaped arm; said second slot communicating with the keyhole slot.
5. Supporting means for garment hangers as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
