Description

(54) A CUTTING DEVICE (71) I, EDWARD FREEMAN, a British subject of The Croft, 5 The Drive, Greatham, Hartlepool, Cleveland do hereby de dare the invention for which I pray that a patent may be granted to me, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention relates to a chisel.
Known chisels are made either entirely of metal or such that a large proportion of the chisel is made of metal. It is an aim of the present invention to reduce the amount of metal used in the chisels, thereby enabling savings to be made by using less metal and also enabling the chisels to be produced with less machining than has hitherto been employed.
Accordingly, this invention provides a chisel comprising a metal blade and a body which has been moulded from a mouldable material, the body having a handle and a blade supporting portion, and the metal blade being secured to one face of the blade supporting portion.
If the mouldable material is appropriately chosen, the body of the chisel will not only be able easily to be made but it will also be considerably cheaper than a metal body of similar size. Preferably, the mouldable material is a plastics material. Various types of plastics materials may be employed depending upon the intended use of the chisel. For example, with a chisel that is only designed for paring applications, then the plastics material need not be as hard and tough as a plastics material used for a chisel that is designed to take blows from a hammer. The plastics material may be an epoxy resin plastics material. Where the chisel is to be subject to the blows from a hammer or the like, then the plastics material is advantageously reinforced with a reinforcing material. The reinforcing material may be, for example, another plastics material such for example as Nylon.
The metal blade may be attached to the blade supporting portion of the body in various ways. Thus, for example, the blade may be stuck to the face of the blade supporting portion. The blade may also be releasably attached to the face of the blade supporting portion. If desired, the blade and the adjacent surface of the blade supporting portion can be flat or the blade and the adjacent surface of the blade supporting portion can be appropriately shaped, so that the blade can be keyed to the blade supporting portion. When the blade is releasably attached to the blade supporting portion, it will be apparent that the blade can then easily be replaced when it becomes worn. The blade can be releasably attached to the blade supportng portion by screws, which are preferably counter-sunk to avoid unnecessary projections.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a chisel in accordance with the invention; Figure 2 is a side view of the chisel shown in Figure 1; and Figure 3 is a partial plan view of the chisel shown in Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings, there is shown a chisel 2 having a plastics body 4. The plastics body 4 comprises a handle 6 and a blade supporting portion 8. The blade supporting portion 8 is provided with a recess 10 which receives a metal blade 12.
The metal blade 12 is stuck to the reinforcing portion 8 by means of an adhesive. A typical adhesive may be a epoxy resin adhesive but other types of adhesive may be employed.
As shown in the drawings, the metal blade 12 has a leading edge 14 which pro jects beyond the leading edge 16 of the blade supporting portion 8. As shown most clearly in Figure 2, the portions 14 and 16 are chamfered and form one continuous chamfer.
The handle 6 may be reinforced with a reinforcing material such for example as Nylon when the chisel 2 is designed to be a hit with a hammer.
The major part of the chisel 2, i.e. the body 4, is formed of the plastics material.
The body 4 may be easily moulded and may be more easily formed than if the body 4 were made of a metal and had to be machined to shape. Still further, by using appropriate plastics materials, the body 4 will be cheaper to produce than a metal body and will also be lighter. The blade 12 comprises only a small portion of the total size of the chisel 2 and, being flat, can easily be manufactured.
As shown in Figure 2, the surface 18 of the body 4 and the surface 20 of the blade 12 are flush with each other so that there are no undesirable shoulders or other obstacles.
The chisel 2 can easily be sharpened since large amounts of metal do not have to be ground away. More specifically, when the leading edge 14 needs sharpening, it may be just sharpened as usual and any of the leading edge 16 that has to be removed is easily done since this leading edge is merely of a plastics material.
Since the chisel 2 can be moulded to shape, it can be easily manufactured in various designs and can easily be provided in one or more colours for aesthetic and/ or identification purposes. Also, the chisel can be provided with stamped information such as a name or tool size.
It is to be appreciated that the embodiment of the invention described above has been given by way of example only and that modifications may be effected. Thus, for example, the blade 12 could be attached to the blade supporting portion 8 using a keyway (not shown). Also, if screws were employed to attach the blade 12 to the blade supporting portion 8, the blade 12 could be replaced if it became worn.
Further, the chisel 2 can be made from a mouldable material other than a plastics material.
WHAT I CLAIM IS: 1. A chisel comprising a metal blade and a body which has been moulded from a mouldable material, the body having a handle and a blade supporting portion, and the metal blade being secured to one face of the blade supporting portion.
2. A chisel according to claim 1 in which the mouldable material is a plastics material.
3. A chisel according to claim 2 in which the plastics material is an epoxy resin plastics material.
4. A chisel according to any one of the preceding claims in which the mouldable material is reinforced with a reinforcing material.
5. A chisel according to any one of the preceding claims in which the metal blade is stuck to the face of the blade supporting portion.
6. A chisel according to any one of claims 1 to 4 in which the metal blade is releasably attached to the face of the blade supporting portion.
7. A chisel according to claim 6 in which the metal blade is attached by counter-sunk screws to the face of the blade supporting portion.
8. A chisel according to any one of the preceding claims in which metal blade has a chamfered leading edge, and in which the blade supporting portion has a chamfered leading edge.
9. A chisel according to any one of the preceding claims in which the metal blade fits in a recessed part of the blade supporting portion.
10. A chisel substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
