Description

54) TIME INDICATING DEVICES (71) We, SHARP-PETRASZ LI MITED of Valley View, Halifax Road, Shelf, Halifax in the county of York, a British Company, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: The invention relates to time indicating devices.
The invention provides an indicating device comprising: first indicating means which indicates the time; and second indicating means which indicates a plurality of the organs and/or functions of the body, in sequence; the first and second indicating means being interrelated to associate each said organ or function of the body with a predetermined time so that at any given time indicated by the first indicating means, the second indicating means always indicates the organ or function of the body associated with that predetermined time.
It is preferred that the first indicating means comprises means to indicate the time over a twenty four hour cycle.
It is known from a study of Yoga, Acupuncture and other subjects that the organs and functions of the body follow a regular cycle, with peak periods and resting periods, and for someone who is interested in such subjects it is of great practical use to have a time indicating device which also indicates the state of one or more organs and/or functions of the body.
The device may comprise a watch. so that a user can consult the indicating device at any time to obtain information about the organs and/or functions indicated. Alternatively however. the device may comprise a clock.
The indicating device may have a face, hour and minute hands, and means to move the hands over the face, the face having a first portion indicating the hours 'of the twenty four hour cycle in sequence, and a second portion indicating in sequence the said plurality of organs and/or functions of the body, each organ or function being positioned adjacent to'the time at which that organ or function undergoes its peak activity. For example it is believed that the liver undergoes its peak activity during the hours of one and two and accordingly the face may carry the word "Liver" adjacent to that part of the face which' indicates the hours of one and two.
It is believed that certain organs also have cyclical variations according to the seasons and the face may also be arranged to indicate'for each season which organs or functions are at a seasonal peak during that season.
To assist in reading the twenty four hour cycle, that part of the face relating to daytime may be marked differently to that part of the face relating to night-time. For example it may have a lighter colour or shade.
The' indicating device need not necessarily have a face and hands as described above and as an alternative the device may comprise a digitally operated display device having a first display area which displays the hours of the twenty four hour cycle in sequence and a second display area which displays the said plurality of organs and/or functions of the body in sequence, the display of the hours and the display of the organs or functions being synchronised so that when any given hour is displayed by the first display area the second display area displays the organ or function which undergoes its peak activity at that time.
Alternatively the- first indicating means may comprise a face and hands to indicate the time and the second indicating means may comprise a display area to display the organ or function of the body which is at its peak at the time indicated by the hands.
The first indicating means may comprise means to give an audible indication of the time.
The second indicating means may comprise an audible indicator arranged to identify the said plurality of organs and/or functions of the body in sequence.
By way of example, specific embodiments of the invention will now be described, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a view of the hands and face of one embodiment of clock according to the invention; Figure 2 is a view of the hands and face of a second embodiment of clock according to the invention; Figure 3 is a view of the hands and face of a watch according to the invention; and Figure 4 is a view of a second embodiment of watch according to the invention.
Referring first to Figure 1, there is shown a clock having a face 30, hour hand 31, and minute hand 32. The clock is a twenty four hour clock and arranged around the periphery of the face are numerals 1 to 24, indicating hours in the twenty four hour cycle. The numeral 12. indicating noon, is at the top of the face and the numeral 24, indicating midnight is at the bottom of the face.
The face is divided into an outer annular portion 33 and an inner circular portion 34.
The annular portion 33 is divided into sectors by radial lines, each sector extending over a period of the twenty four hour cycle.
Most of the sectors are marked with the name of one particular organ of the body but two sections indicate functions of the body. The sectors each indicate the organ or function of the body which is at its peak period during the hours marked adjacent to the sector. For example the stomach enters its peak period at 7.00 a.m., reaches its maximum peak at 8.00 a.m. and leaves its peak period at 9.()() a.m. The resting period for the stomach is twelve hours later, i.e. at the diametrically opposite point on the face.
between the hours of 19 and 21.
It will be seen that not only does the clock indicate the time of day or night. utilising the hour and minute hands. but the hour hand 31 also points to'that organ of the body which is at its peak period.
The central portion 34 is divided by radial lines into four sections the sections being marked respectively with the words "SUM MER". "AUTUMN". "WINTER" and "SPRING" These sections are positioned adjacent to the organs or functions of the body which it is believed have a Seasonal peak during the particular Season indicated.
For example it is believed that during the Spring the lungs, large intestine and stomach undergo a Seasonal peak, in addition to the twenty four hour cyclical variation.
The clock thus gives its user all the information required concerning twenty four hour and Seasonal variations in the activity of the organs of the body.
Turning now to Figure 2, there is shown a clock having an alternative face. The clock is substantially identical to that shown in Figure 1, except that the face is octagonal as is the central portion 34 of the face. The face is marked with the numerals 1 to 24, and with the various organs or functions of the body and the Seasons, to give exactly the same information as the clock shown in Figure 1.
The invention is not restricted to the details of the foregoing embodiments and other shapes and design of clock face are possible. Furthermore, the invention is applicable to timing devices other than clocks and may for example be applied to watches.
Instead of having a face and hands, the timing device may for example comprise a digital clock which has a display area illustrating not only the specific time on the twenty four hour cycle, but also the organ or function of the body which is at its peak period at that particular time.
Figure 3 shows an embodiment of watch according to the invention. The watch has a face 36, marked with the numerals 1 to 12, and hour hand 38 and a minute hand 40.
The watch thus indicates the time over a twelve hour cycle in a conventional manner.
However the face also has a display window 42 through which is visible the organ or function of the body which is at its peak at the hour indicated by the hands. The time indicated in the Figure is just after 12 noon and thus the word "HEART" appears in the window. The word is carried on a disc mounted behind the face and the disc carries the names of the other organs or functions of the body arranged around its periphery.
The disc rotates once every twenty four hours, and is driven by a 2:1 gear train from the shaft carrying the hour hand. In other words the disc rotates once for every two rotations of the hour hand and twelve hours after the time indicated in Figure 3, at 12 midnight, the window will reveal the words "GALL BLADDER' although the hands of the watch will have returned to the position shown.
The invention is not restricted to the details of the embodiment shown in Figure 3 and instead of being driven continuously with the hour hand. the disc behind the face may be digitally or incrementally driven, so that the name of each organ or function jumps into position at the window each time the associated hour is reached by the hour hand.
It is not essential for the organs or functions of the body to be indicated by writing. For instance each organ or function may be represented by a small picture of an organ, or some other diagram or symbol which identifies the organ or function.
In addition to indicating the state of the organs or functions during hourly and Seasonal periods, the time indicating device may also be arranged to indicate the relationship of one or more organs or functions of the body to other items such as traditional basic elements. For instance the heart, small intestine, temperature and circulation are associated with the basic element Fire, and this may be indicated on the dial of the clocks shown in Figures 1 and 2, and in the window 42 of Figure 3. Alternatively additional windows 44 and 46 may be provided, as shown in dotted lines in Figure 3, window 44 indicating the associated element and window 46 the associated Season.
It is not essential for the time or the state of the body organs or functions to be indicated visually. Figure 4 shows a watch 50 containing electronic circuitry and having two small loudspeakers 51 and 52. Small actuating buttons 53 and 54 are respectively associated with the loudspeakers. When the button 53 is depressed, a recorded voice message within the watch gives an audible announcement of the time, through the loudspeaker 51. When the button 54 is pressed, a similar recording announces the organ or function which is at its peak at that time. So-called "speaking clocks" and "speaking watches" are already known, and the details of the circuitry used may be conventional and do not form part of the invention.Any form of visual, audible or other indicating means may be used to indicate the time. in combination with any visual, audible or other indicting means for indicating the associated organ or function.
