Description

(54) LIFTING APPARATUS (71) We, BRICKHOUSE DUDLEY LIMITED, a British Company of Dudley Road West, Tipton, West Midlands DY4 7XD do hereby declare the invention for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us and the method by which it is to be performed to be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention relates to a lifting apparatus for lifting a manhole cover or other article.
An object of the invention is to provide a new and improved lifting apparatus.
According to the invention we provide a lifting apparatus comprising base, and a lever removably mounted on the base for pivotal movement about horizontal and vertical axes, the lever carrying at one position a connector adapted to engage an article to be lifted and at another position, more distant from the horizontal axis than the connector, a hand engageable part which is extendable relative to the remainder of the lever.
The connector may be at or adjacent one end of the lever the hand engage able part projecting from the other end of the lever and the horizontal axis being intermediate the opposite ends of the lever.
One embodiment of the invention will now be described in more detail by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing which is a diagrammatic perspective view of a lifting apparatus embodying the invention.
Referring to the Figure, a lifting apparatus is indicated generally at 10 and comprises a tripod base 11 having three legs 13 welded to a central tube 14. At their lower ends of the legs 13 have ground engageable pads 15 fixed thereto and an axle 16 is rotatably received within the tube 14 and engages, at its lower end, a lower end wall 17 of the tube 14. At its upper end the axle 16 has a transversely extending pivot pin 18 which is received in apertures 19 formed in each of two limbs 20 of a generally inverted U-section lever 21.
At one end the lever 21 has a hook 22 pivotally connected thereto by a pivot pin 23 received in apertures 24 formed in the limbs 20 and the hook 22 engages a beam 25 formed with pairs of slots 26 in which lifting keys 27 adapted to engage in the key hole slots 28 of a manhole cover 29 are received.
At its other end the lever 21 has a pair of pins 30 received in apertures 31 in the limbs 20.
An outer tube 32 of a two-part telescopic handle 33 is received between the limbs 20, the top of the lever 21 and the pivot pins 30 and is restrained from complete withdrawal from within the lever 21 by means of a restraining stop (not shown) which engages the pins 30 to prevent further outward movement of the tube 32 from the position shown in the figure. Within the tube 32 an inner handle member 35 is telescopically received. A clip 34 is provided to engage the end of the inner member 35 when it is fully retracted to prevent the handle extending whilst the apparatus is being transported.
A carrying handle 36 is provided on the lever 21, located so that when the telescopic handle 33 is retracted into the body the carrying handle is located such that when fully retracted the apparatus is balanced for easy carriage by hand.
Because the axle 16 can be removed from the base 11 merely by lifting the lever 21 with the carrying handle 36 the lifting device can be easily diassembled and because the handle 33 can be retracted and the axle 16 folded into the underside of the lever 21 the lifting apparatus can be transported conveniently in a minimum space.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS: 1. A lifting apparatus comprising a base, and a lever removably mounted on the base for pivotal movement about horizontal and vertical axes, the lever carrying at one position a connector adapted to engage an article
