Description

(54) A CONTAINER (71) We, SCHMALBACH LUBECA G.m.b.H., of 1 Schmalbachstrasse, D-3300 Braunschweig, Federal Republic of Germany, a German body corporate, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: The present invention relates to a packaging container preferably a metal tub-like container closed with a press-in lid.
Packaging containers with press-in lids are known in a multitude of structural sizes and constructions. As known in such containers the most sensitive and weakest point is the connecting region between container and lid.
For this reason it is necessary to give particular attention to the problem of the seal resulting therefrom and the secure fit of the lid, since the requirements for maximum sealing and closure safety in connection with storage and transportation behaviour and impact effects on the container, even under the most unfavourable conditions, have to be fulfilled.
The use of additional tension rings, which generally embrace the edging of container body and lid whilst providing a reasonable closure considerably increases the cost of the container by using this separate element.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a container which fully conforms to the requirements of optimal seal and closure safety of the lid in the mounted state due to its structural design, without requiring additional ancillary elements and which thus with reference to its connecting region between container and lid is resistant to external mechanical influences such as, for example, impact, falling or the like without the container springing a leak or even opening.
According to the present invention there is provided a container and press-in lid combination wherein the container body has, in the region of the opening for receiving the lid, an externally directed bead or curl which is formed of elongate oval crosssectional shape, and wherein the lid has a press-in flank, which is longer than the curl of the body and which, in position, is in frictional engagement with the inside wall surface of the open end of the container body, said press-in flank of the lid merging via a bead extending inwardly at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the container into a concave lid portion extending into the container in the normal position of use, said flank extending outwardly to form an arc adapted to positively embrace the outer arc of the curl of the end of the body and being formed into a lid hook portion with rolled edge and which in position frictionally abuts against an axially extending outer wall portion of the curl.
Preferably, the length of the hook portion is slightly greater than the length of the outer edging. Furthermore, the portion of said bead which extends inwardly is preferably flat.
The configuration, especially by the double sealing surface effect and the positive correspondence of parts of the cover with the body edging, increases the safety of the lit fit, so that with impacts or if the container falls on its closure region even though there will possibly be deformation of the said region, no leakage should occur-the concave lid surface acting as an additional safeguard of the closure geometry. If the container topples over or falls, the main lid surface snaps from its concave position extending into the body of the container, into the convex position whereby the lid becomes wedged especially in the region of its pressin flank. It is shown moreover, that the axial loading capacity of filled containers is improved by the structure in accordance with the invention, since a powerful depressing of the lid into the body in contrast to conventional press-in lids is no longer possible.
By the overlap of the hooked cover portion over the edging of the body, a gripping of the lid with the edging is produced which ensures optimal positional location of the lid.
Finally, the lid in accordance with the invention is mutually stackable, a property which facilitates the actual closing operation.
In accordance with a further feature of the invention the press-in flank of the lid is longer than the bead or curl of the body.
A further feature of the invention resides in that the arc of the lid embracing the arc of the bead or curl is provided with a sealing agent on its inside surface.
The present invention will be described further, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. 1 is a sectional side view of an edge region of the body of a container and lid; and Fig. 2 is a sectioned side view of the edge region of the packaging container when closed.
The upper end 1 of a substantially cylindrical or conical body of a packaging container of sheet metal has known concentric beads (not shown) and the body extends as an external beading or curl 2 of elongated oval cross-section. A press-in lid 3 is provided as closure member. In position, pressin flank 4 of the lid 3 is in frictional engagement with the inside wall surface 11 of the end 1 of the body over an arc 5 positively embracing the outer arc 22 of the curl 2 of the body end 1; the inside surface of the arc 5 being provided with a sealing means 55 in a hook portion 6 of the lid having a rolled edge 7 at its end. The spacing of the hook portion 6 from the press-in flank 4 over the arc 5 is so measured that the hook portion 6 abuts frictionally against the vertical wall section 23 of the curl 2.
Fig. 2 moreover shows that the length of the hook portion 6 is slightly greater than the length of the curl 2.
The press-in flank 4 merges with the lid centre by means of a horizontal bead 8 into a concave lid surface 9.
As further shown in the drawings, the press-in flank 4 of the lid 3 is longer than the curl 2 of the body 1.
The structural shape illustrated shows that the lid has two mounting and sealing surfaces which in the closure position of the lid both maximise the effectiveness of the closure seal. One mounting and sealing is formed between the inside wall 11 of the body 1 and the press-in flank 4, and the other is formed between the vertical wall portion 23 of the curl 2 and the hook portion 6. As already stated, there is frictional engagement between the said seat and sealing surfaces.
It is to be understood in connection with the embodiment shown, that the cover 6 even with the powerful external actions such as resulting from an impact possibly as a result of being dropped, in certain circumstances could suffer deformation without substantially losing its closure and sealing effect. In addition, the concave cover surface 9 with such or similar stressing snaps into a convex position (shown in broken lines) and thereby contributes to a firmer abutment of the lid in the region of the lower portion of the press-in flank 4 in co-operation with the horizontal bead 8.
It is considered within the scope of the invention to use this structural embodiment in connection with plastics material buckets or tubs, in which the body is made of plastics material and the cover or lid of sheet metal. In such a case the curl 2 would be formed as a solid bead.
