Description

(54) A HOLDER FOR A CUTTING TOOL (71) I, MARTIN ANTHONY HARVEY, a British Subject, of Howe Park House, Tattenhoe, Buckinghamshire, England, do hereby declare the invention, for which I pray that a patent may be granted to me, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: The invention relates to a holder for a grinding, cutting, abrading, polishing or like tool (hereinafter referred to as a "cutting" tool for simplicity).
According to a first aspect, the invention provides a holder for a cutting tool, comprising three supports arranged in a triangle as considered in plan for providing stable positioning of the holder on a work surface, and resilient means which is arranged on the holder such that the holder or part of it can be moved under pressure, from an initial position, towards the work surface against the action of the resilient means, the holder or part returning to its initial position when the pressure is reduced or released.
Each support may comprise a leg.
The holder may comprise an elongate body with two of the legs mounted transversely of the body at or adjacent one end and the other leg depending from the elongate body.
Each leg may comprise at its free end a rotatable member, such as a wheel, for engaging the work surface so that the holder is movable over the work surface.
The resilient means may comprise a spring assembly for a leading (in use) wheel.
The holder may comprise brackets mounted in the body, which may be adjustable for height, for holding the cutting tool.
According to a second aspect, the invention provides a holder as hereinbefore defined and a cutting tool mounted therein.
One construction embodying the invention is diagrammatically illustrated, by way of example, in the drawings filed with the Provisional Specification, in which: Figure 1 shows an isometric perspective view of a holder; and Figure 2 shows a side elevational view of the frame of Figure 1 in which a cutting tool is mounted.
Referring to the drawings, there is shown a holder 1 for holding a cutting tool. The holder 1 has a body in the form of a central rod 2 from which depend brackets 3 and 4 in which a cutting tool 5 is mounted (Figure 2). The leading (in use) bracket 3 has an inverted Ushape through the legs of which handles 6 are threaded for a threaded fixing with a casing of the tool 5. The trailing (in use) bracket 4 forms a cradle to support the tool 5. The cradle can be tightened by a nut and bolt 7.
The holder 1 is supported on a work surface 7 by supports in the form of three legs 8, 9 and 10 arranged in a triangular array.
Each leg has at its free end a wheel assembly 11. The wheel assembly 11 of the leading (in use) leg 8 includes a spring 12 which forms resilient means.
The trailing wheel assemblies 11 are not sprung and their respective supports or legs 9 and 10 form part of an inverted U-shaped cradle.
The legs 9 and 10 are longer than the leg 8 so that the body 2 slopes downwardly from right to left (as viewed in Figure 2 for example).
The operation of the holder will now be described.
A cutting tool 5, in this case a grinding tool is mounted in the holder and secured by screwing in the handles 6. A cutting disc 13 of the tool 5 is then inclined as shown in Figure 2. Pressure on the handles 6 lowers the leading or front end of the holder against the pressure of the spring 12 from the initial position shown in full lines and at the same time lowers the cutting disc 13 to the dashedline position so that the disc is in a required working attitude. When the frame 1 is pushed forward (to the left, Figure 2) with the grinding tool switched on, the disc 13 cuts off a stud 14 flush with the work surface 7 from which it projects and over which the frame is moved.
When the pressure is released, the spring 12 raises the leading end so that the holder returns to its initial position and at the same time raises the cutting disc 13 from the work surface. This prevents any undue scuffing of the surface 7.
The brackets 3 and 4 for the grinding tool are adjustable in position along the body 2 and thus are adjustable for height and to compensate for any wear of the disc 13.
The brackets 3 and 4 are mounted on the body via sleeves 15 in the embodiment shown.
The legs 8,9 and 10 may be mounted on the body 2 by sleeves, which may be adjustable in position along the body.
It will be understood that the construction of the embodiment shown is only one example of the invention and that various modifications may be made. For example, the spring 12 may be replaced by a dash-pot, or by a bellowsarrangement. Also, the body 2 may be of any suitable cross-sectional shape or construction other than the solid round one piece bar shown and may include a key-way which mates with a complementary shape in the sleeves. Also, the holder may be motor-propelled.
WHAT I CLAIM IS: 1. A holder for a cutting tool, comprising three supports arranged in a triangle as considered in plan for providing stable positioning of the holder on a work surface, and resilient means which is arranged on the holder such that the holder or part of it can be moved under pressure, from an initial position, towards the work surface against the action of the resilient means, the holder or part returning to its initial position when the pressure is reduced or released.
2. A holder as claimed in claim 1, in which each support is a leg.
3. A holder as claimed in claim 2, comprising an elongate body with two of the legs mounted opposite sides of the body at or adjacent one end and the other leg depending from the body at or adjacent the other end.
4. A holder as claimed in claim 3, in which the two legs lie in the same plane transversely of the longitudinal axis of the body.
5. A holder as claimed in any of claims 2 to 4, comprising a rotatable member on each leg for engaging the work surface.
6. A holder as claimed in claim 5, comprising as the resilient means a spring assembly of the wheel of the other leg.
7. A holder as claimed in any of claims 3 to 6, comprising brackets on the body for holding the cutting tool.
8. A holder as claimed in claim 7, in which the brackets are adjustable in position along the body.
9. A holder for a cutting tool, substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the drawings filed with the Provisional Specification.
10. A holder as claimed in any preceding claim, provided with a cutting tool.
