Description
(54) PIPE SUPPORT
(71) We, PRACTICAL CONSTRUCTION
COMPANY, a British Company, of 137
Bourne Avenue, Hayes, Middlesex do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:
The invention relates to a device for supporting conduits for example those used in central heating installations which have to be supported in a space between two longitudinally extending members such as joists, or in similar situations.
The term conduit use herein refers, it will be understood, to a pipe for the conveyance of water, gas or oil or which can hold cables e.g. electrical power cables.
According to the invention there is provided a device for supporting a conduit or conduits between two longitudinally extending spaced members such as joists, comprising a body consisting of elongate parts which are slidable relative to one another for adjusting the length of the body each with an elongate slot through it for receiving a clamp device when the slots are superimposed for holding the body at a required adjusted length, and each part having an end with fastening means so that the device can in use span a space between, and be fastened to, the two members.
The parts can be secured together by a releasable clamp device or securing means, e.g. a wing nut and a bolt. The bolt may be integral with a clip for holding a pipe.
A construction embodying the invention is diagrammatically illustrated, by way of example, in the drawings accompanying the
Provisional Specification, in which:
Figure 1 shows a side elevational view of one part of a body of the device;
Figure 2 shows a plan view of the part of Figure 1;
Figure 3 shows a view in the direction of the arrow 'A-A' of Figure 1; and
Figure 4 shows a side elevation of the
complete device in position to support a
pipe.
Referring to the drawings, a device 1
for supporting central heating pipes com
prises a body made up of two elongate
parts 2 and 3 each in the form of a flat
metal angle bracket. The- longer limb 4 of
each part 2 and 3 has a slot 5 in it and the
shorter limb 6, which is at substantially 90" to the limb 4 has, in the embodiment shown, fastening means in the form of three tri
angular spikes 7 directed outwardly, i.e. to
the left as viewed in Figure 1. The spikes
7 enable the device 1 to be secured to a
timber joist 8.
Each part 2 is made by taking a flat
strip of metal and punching or stamping
out the slot 5 and the spikes 7 in one operation, using a suitable metal forming tool.
The strip is then bent to form the limbs 4
and 6.
The parts 2 and 3 of the device are
secured together by releasable clamp device or securing means in the form of a wing
nut 9 and a bolt 10 which passes through
the slots 5 in the two parts when the parts overlap and the slots are superimposed. The bolt 10 is integral with a pipe clip.
The length of the device 1 can be varied by sliding the overlapping parts 2 and 3 relative to one another when the wing nut 9 is loosened, and then tightening the nut
9 to clamp the parts together so that the device is adjusted at the desired length.
In use to support a domestic central heating pipe 12 in a space between two joists 8 beneath floorboards 13 (Figure 4), a device 1 is placed in the space at the desired height and the spikes 7 at one end of one part 2 say are forced into the adjacent joist as by hammering on the limb 6. The other part 3 is then adjusted in position relative to the part 2 by sliding (with the wing nut 9 loose) until it abuts the other joist.
Its spikes 7 are then forced as by hammering into that joist.
The nut 9 is positioned so that the clip is aligned with the run of the pipe, and is then tightened. The pipe 12 is then mounted in the clip 11.
Of course, the embodiment described is one example only of the invention and can be modified in numerous ways. For ex
ample, the spikes 7 may be welded to the limb after bending and there may be more or less spikes than the three shown. Further, the slot may be open at the end of the limb opposite the limb 6. Also, one long limb of one part may receive the other in a telescope manner for guiding it during adjustment. Again, there may be one or more holes through the limb 6 in addition to or replacing the spikes, for receiving a screw or screws for screwing the device to
a joist.
In every embodiment, the device 1 can support several clips, and it can be used with the limbs directed upwardly as shown in Figure 4, or downwardly.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS:
1. A device for supporting a conduit or conduits between two longitudinally extending spaced members such as joists, comprising a body consisting of elongate parts which are slidable relative to one another for adjusting the length of the body, each with an elongate slot through it for receiving a clamp device when the slots are superimposed for holding the body at a required adjusted length, and each part having an end with fastening means so that the device can in use span a space between, and be fastened to, the two members.
2. A device according to Claim 1, comprising two elongate parts.
3. A device according to Claim 2, comprising a single elongate slot in each part extending lengthwise of the part.
4. A device according to any preceding Claim, the clamp device comprising a nut and boll.
5. A device according to Claim 4, the bolt mounting a seat for holding a conduit.
6. A device according to Claim 5, the seat comprising a pipe clip.
7. A device according to any preceding Claim, the fastening means comprising one or more spikes carried by each elongate part.
8. A device according to Claim 7, each elongate part comprising an L-shape member.
9. A device according to any of Claims
1 to 6, the fastening means comprising a hole for a screw.
10. A device for supporting a conduit or conduits between two longitudinally extending members such as joists, substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as shown in the drawings accompanying the Provisional Specification.
