Description

(54) HOSE FLUID LEAKAGE WARNING DEVICE (71) We, DUNLOP LIMITED, a British Company, of Dunlop House, Ryder Street, St. James's, London S.W.1, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention concerns improvements in or relating to hose and in particular to a flexible hose provided with a fluid leakage warning device and a hose fluid leakage warning system.
According to one aspect of the present invention a flexible hose comprises a main fluid retaining reinforcement carcass, a secondary fluid retaining carcass which encloses at least a portion of the main carcass so that on leakage of fluid through any enclosed portion of the main carcass the secondary carcass expands radially relative to the main carcass to prevent escape of fluid and a trigger device which extends in a circumferential direction and is operable by radial expansion of the secondary carcass to emit a warning signal.
The warning signal which may be, e.g.
audio or visual may in turn be used to trigger a remote warning device. For example the warning signal can be a sound wave of a predetermined frequency and a receiver tuned to that frequency can be provided remotely, e.g. on a floating buoy, so that on receiving the signal an audio andlor visual warning is provided.
The trigger device may comprise a signal emitter connected between two ends of wire so that radial expansion of the secondary carcass causes the connected ends to move apart thereby triggering the emitter.
The emitter may be connected between the free ends of a length of wire which extends in a circumferential direction around the secondary carcass. Alternatively the emitter may be connected between respective one ends of a pair of circumferentially extending wires. PIeferably said pair of wires extend only partially around the secondary carcass and the free ends are secured thereto by being partially or completely embedded in the secondary carcass.
Preferably the or each wire extends for at least a portion of its length about the exterior surface of the secondary carcass.
According to a further aspect of the pre-.
sent invention a fluid leakage warning system for a hose comprises a flexible hose according to the first aspect of the present.
invention and a warning device located re-.
mote from the hose and triggerable on operation of the hose trigger device.
An example of a hose which is suitable for use in the present invention is that described in out U.K. Patent No. 1,503,502.
A preferred embodiment of the present invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to theac- companying drawing in which: Figure 1 is a radial cross-sectional view of a hose of the present invention carrying fluid in its central bore; Figure 2 is a side view of the hose of Figure l; Figure 3 is a radial cross-sectional view of the hose of Figure 1 after fluid leakage, and Figure 4 is an axial cross-sectional view along the line X-X of the hose of Figure 3.
The hose shown in Figures 1 and 2.of the accompanying drawing comprises a main fluid retaining reinforcement carcass 11, a secondary fluid retaining carcass 10 having an embedded reinforcement which encloses the main carcass and is radially expansible relative to the main carcass to prevent escape of fluid leaking through the main carcass and a warning device which is operable to emit a warning signal on radial expansion of the secondary carcass caused by fluid leakage.
The warning device comprises a wire 13 which extends in a circumferential direction around the outer periphery of the secondary carcass 10 and a signal emitter 14 connected between the free ends of the wire. The device 14 is secured to the outer surface of the secondary carcass 10 by means of straps 15.
In use if fluid 12 leaks through a failure 16 (Fig. 4) in the main carcass 11 the secondary carcass 10 expands radially whilst preventing escape of the fluid 12. The configuration and shape of the hose and warning device is then as shown in Figures 3 and 4. This radial expansion of the secondary carcass 10 causes the ends of the wire 13 connected to the device 14 to move apart thereby triggering the device 14 which emits a warning signal.
In an alternative embodiment (not illustrated) the trigger device may comprise two lengths of wire respective one ends of which are connected to the sound emitter device 14 with the other free ends being connected, e.g. at diametrically opposed positions, to the secondary carcass 10.
A flexible hose in accordance with the present invention is particularly suitable for underwater use because the position of any leaks can be determined without the need for visual inspection. Thus a number of the trigger devices may be provided at spaced intervals along the length of an assembly of interconnected hoses and arranged selectively to actuate warning indicators on a central monitoring panel to show in which part of the hose-line leakage has occurred.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS: - 1. A flexible hose comprising a main fluid retaining reinforcement carcass, a secondary fluid retaining carcass which encloses at least a portion of the main carcass so that on leakage of fluid through any enclosed portion of the main carcass the secondary carcass expands radially relative to the main carcass to prevent escape of fluid and a trigger device which extends in a circumferential direction and is operable by radial expansion of the secondary carcass to emit a warning signal.
2. A flexible hose according to claim 1 wherein the trigger device comprises a signal emitter connected between two ends of wire, the emitter being triggered by radial expansion of the secondary carcass causing the connected ends of the wire to move apart.
3. A flexible hose according to claim 2 wherein the signal emitter is connected between the free ends of a length of wire which extends in a circumferential direction around the secondary carcass.
4. A flexible hose according to claim 2 wherein the signal emitter is connected between respective one ends of a pair of wires each of which extends in a circumferential direction.
5. A flexible hose according to claim 4 wherein each wire extends only partially around the secondary carcass and the free ends are secured by being partially or completely embedded in the secondary carcass.
6. A flexible hose according to any one of claims 2 to 5 wherein the or each wire extends for at least a portion of its length about the exterior surface of the secondary carcass.
7. A flexible hose according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the trigger device is operable to emit a warning signal which in turn triggers a remote warning device.
8. A flexible hose constructed and arranged substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
9. A hose fluid leakage warning system comprising a flexible hose according to any one of the preceding claims and a warning device located remote from the hose and triggerable on operation of the hose trigger device.
10. A hose fluid leakage warning system according to claim 9 wherein the remote warning device is provided on a floating buoy.
11. A hose fluid leakage warning system constructed and arranged substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawing.

Claims (11)

**WARNING** start of CLMS field may overlap end of DESC **. wire.
