Description
(54) IMPROVED HINGE AND LEAF THEREFOR
(71) We, ED. SCHARWACHTER
GmbH & Co. K G. a company organised under the laws of the Federal Republic of
Germany of Hohenhagener Strasse 26-28, 5630 Remscheid, Germany, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed to be particularly described in and by the following statement: l his invention relates to a hinge and a leaf therefor suitable for use in a torsion bar door stay device. especially for an automobile door.
According to the present invention there is provided a leaf for a hinge of the type incorporating a torsion bar spring stay device, said leaf being in the form of a one-piece sheet metal component having a base portion and first and second mutually opposite upstanding flanges adapted to support the ends of a hinge pin and one of which is adapted to support an abutment roll of the stay device, the base portion being adapted to be secured to a door or door frame and having a projecting portion formed from two superimposed layers of the sheet metal making up the leaf, and the second flange being reinforced by a superimposed layer of the sheet metal.
Even though use is made of comparatively thin sheet metal, the hinge pin may be anchored in the reinforced second flange so as to be secured against rotation by means of a circumferential milled hinge pin region of appropriate length. Secondly. the doublelayered, laterallv projecting portion of the base of the hinge leaf reliably resists those forces originating in the door stay system and which tend during the closure of the door to lift from its base that flange of the hinge leaf which is adjacent to the hinge pin.
Advantageously. the hinge leaf is strengthened along its transverse edge adjacent to the hinge pin by a third flange extending parallel to the hinge pin. Preferably said hinge leaf has a substantially rectangular base bounded along three sides by the three upstanding flanges.
The projecting portion which extends the base of the hinge leaf and is disposed opposite to the abutment roll may be formed by two sheet metal fins in face to face contact and approximately in mutual congruence. The projecting portion may be traversed by a screw hole for one of the fixing screws for the hinge leaf. The layer which reinforces the upstanding third flange consists with advantage of a sheet metal fin which is not mutually congruent with the third flange, the sheet metal fin extending only over that portion of the flange in the pin bearing is disposed and being furnished in its double-layered region is a transverse bore which in use journals the hinge pin.
The third flange preferably has a projection oriented radially to the hinge pin axis in which there is a hole for a shaft which journals the abutment roll of the door stay device.
The holes for the attachment screws in the base of the hinge leaf are with advantage disposed at the corners of an obtuse-angled, isosceles triangle, the base of which is parallel to the hinge pin and are all disposed upon that side of the shaft carrying the abutment roll which is opposite to the hinge pin.
The fins, folded one onto the other of the sheet metal blank which is folded to form the hinge leaf, are connected to each other, with advantage, by welding. The two sheet metal fins which form the projection laterally extending the stop base are with advantage connected to each other by spotwelding or boss-welding. The third flange and the layer which reinforces it are with advantage connected together by a bead weld laid along the edge of the reinforcing layer which is oriented approximately ver tically on the stop base.
The invention will now be described in greater detail with reference to the accom panting drawings. wherein: Filare I is a side view of a complete leaf hinge embodying the invention; Figure 2 is a plan of a leaf of the leaf hinge: Figure 3 is a first end view of the hinge leaf shown in Figure 2: Figure 4 is a second end view of the hinge leaf shown in Figure 2:
Figure 5 is a development of the sheet metal blank, from which the hinge leaf shown in Figure 2 is folded.
The leaf hinge shown in Figure 1 consists of two hinge leaves 1 and 3 interconnected by a hinge pin 2. The leaf l is formed by bending a suitably shaped blank of sheet metal to form a base 7 and first second and third upstanding flanges 15, 16 and 17 along respective ones of three sides of the base.
The third flange 17 lies in a plane parallel to the hinge pin and interconnects the first and second flanges. The flanges 15 and 16 have holes 18 for receiving the ends of the hinge pin.
The leaf 3 has a base 12 and upstanding flanges 13. The leaf 3 is generally U-shaped in profile and tapers to one end at which the flanges 13 fit within the flanges 15 and 16 where thev are articulated thereto bv the hinge pin. The flanges 13 are provided with suitable cut-outs for retaining two limbs of a generally S-shaped torsion bar spring 14.
The remaining limb 11 of the spring is co-operable with an abutment roll 10, the shaft 9 of which is received in a hole 20 in a projection 8.
The construction of the leaf 1 will now be described in greater detail:
As shown in Figure 2, a projecting portion or lug 19 projects from the base 7 beyond the flange 15. As is most clearlv shown in Figure 1. this lug is formed from first and second superimposed fins 22 and 23, the former of which projects from, and lies in the plane of the base 7, while the latter is cut from the material of the flange 15 and is folded through a right angle from the plane of this flange. The two fins are secured together by a spot or boss weld or other joint 24. The lug 19 is formed with a screw hole 21 and the base 7 with screw holes 27 and 28 for screws indicated bv axes 4. 5 and 6 which secure the leaf to the door or door frame. The base portion of the other leaf 3 is also formed with screws which secure that leaf to the door frame. At the edge of the base 7 opposite to the lug 19. a layer or fin 25 cut from the material of the base and folded into an upstanding position serves to reinforce the flange 16 and is secured thereto bv a weld bead 26 along the edge of the fin. The fin 25 is substantially rectangular in form and extends over no more than a fraction of the length and height of the flange 16. The flange 15 is smaller in size than the flange 16 and constitutes only a support for the hinge pin.
whereas the flange 16 also supports the roll 10.
The holes 21,27 and 28 have their axes disposed at the corners of an isoceles triangle lying wholly on one side of the axis through the hole 20. namely that side opposite the hinge pin.
The hinge leaf 1 is formed by folding the sheet metal blank shown in Figure 5. The blank has portions separated by fold lines.
namely a portion 7 which forms the base, and portions 150, 160 and 170 which. when folded, form the flanges 15. 16 and 17.
Projecting from one end of the base portion is a portion 220 which forms the fin 22 and from the other end a portion 250 which forms the fin 25. Projecting from the portion 150 is a portion 230 which forms the fin 23.
The portion 230 is separated from the base portion 7 by a slot. and the portion 250 from the portion 160 by a further slot.
The base portion 7 of the blank is formed with the screw holes 21, 27 and 28. The portion 230 is likewise formed with a hole 21 which becomes aligned with the hole 71 of the base portion when the blank is erected.
Portions 15O and 160 are formed with holes 30 for the ends of the hinge pin, and the portion 250 is likewise formed with a hole 30 in portion 160 when the blank is erected.
The portion 160 has a projection 8() formed with a hole 20 for the shaft 9 when the blank is erected.
To erect the blank, the portions 15() and 160 are bent upright out of the plane of the drawings along the fold lines which separate these portions from the portion 170. The portion 250 is simultaneously bent upright.
The portion 230 is then bent inwards from the plane of the drawing perpendicular to the portion 150.
By a further perpendicular bending of the portion 170 out of the plane of the drawing, the portions 150, 160 and 17() reach a position adjacent to the base portion 7. in which they are cranked perpendicularly out of the plane of the drawing and to the stop base 7. At the same time, the fin portion 23() comes into face to face contact with the lateral projection 220 and is fixed to the latter by means of the spot weld 24. In this operation. the portions 25() and 16() also come into face to face contact so that the portion 250 can be attached to the portion 160 by means of a weld line 26. By this method of folding. the holes 30 for the hinge pin bearing come into mutually aligned positions and at the same time the holes 21 for the passage of the fixing screw 4 come into alignment.
