Description

(54) IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO PIPE LIFTING DEVICES (71) We, HEEREMA ENGINEERING SER VICE (U.K.) LIMITED, a British Company, of Henrietta House, 9 Henrietta Place, London W1M 9AG, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:- This invention relates to pipe lifting devices and is particularly although not exclusively applicable to lifting devices for tubular piles such as may be used in the construction of off-shore oil rigs.
The invention provides a pipe lifting device comprising a body having a forward end with means for attachment of a draw line, a rearward end having means for connF tion to a hoist rope, a plurality of latches movably mounted on the body between retracted positions and extended positions in which the latches project laterally of the body and weight means within the body acting on the latches to bias the latches to the extended positions when the body is either horizontal or is upright with its forward end lowermost.
The weight means may comprise a single weight located within a cavity in the body disposed forwardly of the latches and connected thereto by a tether which extends through a central aperture in a rear wall of the cavity so that the weight depends from the aperture drawing the tether in a direction to extend the latches whether the body is horizontal or upright with its forward end lowermost.
The latches may be pivotally mounted on the body to move between the extended and retracted positions.
In the retracted positions, the latches may extend rearwardly of their pivotal axes, the latches being movable forwardly and outwardly about said axes from the retracted positions, the body having a rearwardly facing stop face against which the latches abut in their extended positions to support the latches to engage a lifting collar on the inside of a pipe to be lifted to carry the weight of the pipe.
The body may have side openings through which the latches project in their extended positions.
The body may comprise forward and rearward sections telescopically connected together for relative movement, a rearward part of the forward section of the body extending over the latch openings in the contracted condition of the body.
The forward section of the body may be provided with abutment means at the location where it overlies the opening for the latches and the latches may be engageable with the abutment means to prevent the body from extending.
Tethers may be connected to the latches to enable the latches to be released from the abutment means by further contraction into the housing.
A locking device may be provided for locking the forward and rearward sections of the body in the extended condition.
In any of the arrangements referred to above, four latches may be provided at spaced locations around the body.
The following is a description of a specific embodiment of the invention, reference being made to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a diagrammatic view of a pipe lifting device; Figure 2 is a sectional view through the lifting device showing the construction in greater detail in its extended position; Figure 3 is a similar view to Figure 2 showing the device in the contracted con dition; Figure 4 is a section on the line A-A of Figure 2; Figure 5 is a section on the line B-B of Figure 2; Figure 6 is a section on the line C-C of Figure 2; Figure 7 is a section on the line D-D of Figure 2; Figure 8 shows a cradle for the device; Figure 9 illustrates the initial lifting of a horizontal pipe using the device, and Figure 10 shows a release bracket for the device.
Referring firstly to Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings, there is shown a lifting device intended for long tubular piles comprising an elongate body having a forward section 11 which is telescopically connected to a rearward section 12. The forward section has a pulling eye 13 secured to its forward end to receive a draw line 14 for drawing the body into a horizontally extending pile. The rearward section 12 of the body has a recess 15 at the end thereof bridged by a removable pin 16 for receiving a lifting eye 17 which, in turn, is connected by a shackle 18 to a hoist rope of a crane or direct to the crane hook. A sling protector 19 is mounted on the eye to prevent damage to the sling or tether by the end periphery of the pile 20 as described later.
The rearward section 12 of the device has a heavy transversely extending bearer frame 21 therein and on the bearer frame four pairs of spaced walls 22 are mounted at spaced locations around the section, each pair of walls defining a channel 23 (see Figure 5) extending along and into the section as shown in Figure 4. The channels 23 open into four elongate slots 23a extending from the forward end of rearward section 12 rearwardly along the section. Four latches 24 are mounted in the respective slots on pivots 25 mounted on the respective walls 22 to swing forwardly from positions in which they are retracted into the slots to extend outwardly from the slots 23a.
In their fully extended positions the latches engage the bearer frame 21. When extended the latches engage under a lifting ring 20a on the inner periphery of pile 20. The latches 24 are retracted into the channels 23 by the rearward pivotal movement, stops 24a being provided within the structure which the latches engage when fully retracted. Tethers 26 are connected to eyes 27 on the rearward side of each latch and the tethers 26 are connected to a single line 28 which extends through an opening in the rear of the rear section 12. By drawing on the line 28, the latches 24 can be retracted into the body when required.Immediately above the latch slots, the rearward section 12 of the device has an encircling ring or set of fins 12a to engage on the lifting ring 20a to centralise the device in the pipe 20 and thereby prevent the rearward end of the forward section 11 from lodging under the lifting ring when it is desired to withdraw the device from the pipe 20 as described later.
Further tethers 29 are connected to eyes 30 on the forward sides of the latches 24 and pass through openings 31 (see Figure 5) in the frame 21 and corresponding openings in 31a in a bulkhead 21a into the forward section.
The forward section has a frame member 32 having guide tubes 33 (see Figure 6) spaced around its central axis through which the tethers 29 extend and also a bulk-head 34 (see Figure 7) spaced in front of the frame member 32 having a central aperture 35. The four tethers 29 are connected to a single eye 36 attached through the aperture 35 to a line 37 which extends through a solid metal sphere 38 fixed on the line and free to move in the cavity indicated at 39 in front of the bulkhead 34. The line 37 extends through an opening in the front of the forward section and ends in a shackle 40.
The sphere 38 will exert a pull on the tethers 29 because of the action of gravity on the sphere which will act to draw the latches 24 into their extended positions if the lifting device is in the upright position with its forward end lowermost as shown or if the lifting device is in a horizontal position. Thus if the lifting device is drawn from its forward end into a horizontally extending pile with the latches 24 extended, the latches will retract into the body when they strike the lifting ring 20a and when the latches have passed the lifting ring, they will automatically be extended outwardly to engage behind the lifting ring due to the action of the sphere 38.
If necessary a further pull can be applied to the end of the line 37 which emerges from the forward end of the lifting device to assist the latches into the extended positions.
As indicated earlier the forward and rearward sections of the lifting device are telescopically connected together. The forward section 11 of the lifting device has a rearward cylindrical part 1 la which encircles the forward part of the rearward section and four spaced lugs 41 are secured around the inner periphery of the cylindrical part 1 la adjacent its rearward end which run in the aforesaid slots 23 (see Figure 5) to prevent the forward and rearward sections from turning with respect to each other. In the extended position of the lifting device, the lugs 41 abut a rearward peripheral portion of the bulk-head 21a. Contraction of the forward and rearward sections is limited by engagement of the lugs 41 with the rearward ends 42 of the elongate slots 23a through which the latches 24 extend.
Each latch 24 is formed with an outwardly projecting abutment 43 at its forward extremity to engage the forward sides of the lugs 41 when the lifting device is in the contracted condition as shown in Figure 3 and hold it against extension with respect to the forward section. The latches can be released to permit the forward section to be extended by pulling on the line 28.
A locking key indicated at 44 on Figure 1 may be provided for holding the forward section in the extended position with respect to the rearward section.
Figure 8 of the drawings shows a cradle 50 mounted on adjustable support 51 on which the lifting device is laid horizontally with its axis coincident with that of a pile to be raised before the device is drawn into the pile.
Figure 9 of the drawings shows the action of a hoist lifting a pile 20 using the lifting device. It will be seen that the sling protector 19 protects the eye 17 from the end of the pile.
In use, the lifting device is locked in the open position using the locking key and is lowered into a horizontal position on the cradle. The locking key is then removed and the lifting device is drawn forward end first into the pile to be lifted. The latches 24 will, under the influence of the weight 38 be in the open 20a positions and when the latches strike the lifting ring in the pile, they will retract until the ring has been passed and will then extend out again to engage behind the lifting ring. If necessary, a pull may be applied to the line 40 to fully extend the latches 24.
The lifting device and the pile can then be raised by the crane hoist attached to the eye 17 and the pile lowered through pile guides into the sea-bed after disconnecting tether 14.
When the pile is in the required position, the lifting device is lowered until the forward section engages triangular shaped release plates 53 spaced around the inner side of the pile below the lifting ring 20a. The forward section is thus supported and continued lowering of the rearward section telescopes the section together closing the latches 24 into their retracted positions and eventually the latches lock behind the abutment plates 41 to lock the lifting device in its contracted conditions. The lifting device as a whole can then be withdrawn from the pile by pulling on the main teher.
To re-extend the lifting device, the device is lowered forward end down into the bracket 60 shown in Figure 10 which is suspended from a hoist. The lifting device is lowered until the weight of the forward section is taken on the bracket. The latches 24 are released from the abutment plates 41 by a pull on the line 28 and the rearward section of the device can then be raised to re-extend the device. The locking key inserted in the extended device to hold it in its extended condition ready for the next operation. Where the lifting device is to be connected to an already vertical pile, the locking device is not required but the procedure is otherwise similar to that described above.
For certain piles an extension nose-piece is attached to the forward section of the lifting device to assist in guiding the device through a series of spaced guides such as provided on an off-shore rig for guiding piles into position.
