Abstract
Tungsten and molybdenum carbides are obtained by fusing mixtures of carbon with tungsten or molybdenum oxide in a carbon crucible in a carbon tube resistance furnace. It is stated that hitherto tungsten carbide has been obtained in small quantities by heating tungsten in a carbon crucible by the electric arc, and that an imperfect carbonation or cementation occurs when tungsten is heated in a carbon tube resistance furnace.
