Description

(54) IMPROVEMENTS IN AND RELATING TO CHANNEL-SHAPED STRIP STRUCTURES (71) We, DRAFTEX DEVELOPMENT AG., ajoint stock company organized under the laws of Switzerland, of Schanbiihl 3,6300 Zug, Switzerland, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention relates to channel-shaped guiding, sealing and finishing strips (hereinafter referred to as "sealing strips"), such as for use for example, in vehicle body construction for attachment to flanges around body openings.
According to the invention, there is provided a channel-shaped sealing, guiding or finishing strip comprising a metal core or carrier completely covered with foamed plastics material, and including at least one gripping rib running along one inside wall of the channel and made of foamed plastics material which is formed integrally with the material covering the carrier.
According to the invention, there is also provided a method of manufacturing a channelshaped sealing strip, comprising the step of extruding foamed plastics material so as to completely cover a metal core or carrier which, either before or after the extrusion step, is formed into channd shape and in which the extrusion step simultaneously forms, in the same foamed plastics material, at least one gripping rib running along and attached to an inside wall of the channel.
Sealing strips embodying the invention and methods according to the invention of making sealing strips, will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of one form of the sealing strip; Figure 2 is a section on line II-II of Figure 1 and Figure 3 is a perspective view of a metal carrier for the strips.
As shown in Figure 1, the sealing strip is made of channel-shaped plastics material 10 which is extruded over a channel-shaped metal core or carrier 12. The carrier 12 may take any convenient form. For example, it may comprise a series of U-shaped elements 14 (Figures 2) joined together by short interconnecting links 16 so as to be reasonably flexible about its longitudinal axis. Instead, the elements may be entirely separate from each other. In another example, the carrier is made of looped wire.
However, any other suitable form is possible.
As shown in Figure 1, the plastics material 10 is extruded so as to provide gripping ribs 18 and 20, the gripping rib 20 being thicker than each of the three ribs 1 8.
In use, the sealing strip is fitted over a flange surrounding an opening, a door opening for example, in a vehicle body and provides a decorative and protective function. The gripping ribs 18 and 20 help to retain the strip in position on the flange and prevent flow of draught and moisture around the interior of the channel.
In accordance with a feature of the invention, the plastics material 10, including the material of the ribs 18 and 20, is extruded in one operation from foamed polyvinyl chloride (PVC) or other similar foamed material. All the plastics material of the strip is therefore the same.
The use of a foamed plastics material for the complete covering and the gripping ribs of the strip is advantageous in that it saves weight as compared with a sealing strip in which the channel-shaped plastics covering, at least, is made of unfoamed plastics material. Furthermore, the use of foamed plastics material for the gripping ribs gives the latter a softer consistency which provides a better sealing and gripping function than would be the case were they to be made of unfoamed material. As compared with a sealing strip in which the main material is relatively hard and the gripping ribs relatively soft, the strip illustrated is advantageous in that it is all extruded in a single operation using a single extruder.
The use of foamed material is also advantageous in that it saves weight and gives an improved "softer" appearance with a matt finish. It is less likely to shrink than unfoamed material.
If desired, the sealing strip may have a sealing section, such as of tubular cross-section, running along and attached to an outside wall of the channel to provide a seal onto which a door for the vehicle body opening can sealingly close. The sealing section can be made of foamed plastics material and can be made separately and adhesively or otherwise attached to the sealing strip, or it can be extruded integrally with the remainder of the plastics material.
The shape and numbers of the gripping ribs 18, 20 can be varied as desired.
The carrier 12 may be made by slitting or slotting a metal blank and then bending the blank into channel form. The extrusion process may be carried out before or after the metal carrier has been bent into channel form.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS: 1. A channel-shaped sealing, guiding or finishing strip comprising a metal core or carrier completely covered with foamed plastics material, and including at least one gripping rib running along one inside wall of the channel and made of foamed plastics which is formed integrally with the material covering the carrier.
2. A strip according to claim 1, in which the foamed plastics material is formed into the required shape by means of an extruder.
3. A method of manufacturing a channel shaped sealing strip, comprising the step of extruding foamed plastics material so as to completely cover a metal core or carrier which, either before or after the extrusion step, is formed into channel shape, and in which the extrusion step simultaneously forms, in the same foamed plastics material, at least one gripping rib running along and attached to an inside wall of the channel.
4. A channel-shaped sealing, guiding or finishing strip substantially as described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
5. Amethod substantially as described with reference to the accompanying drawings of making a channel-shaped sealing, guiding or finishing strip.
