Description

(54) USE OF APPARATUS TO FACILITATE D:RAWING (71) We, JEAN FRANCES GRUN DY, of 47, Longbeach Road, London, S.W.11 and ALEC LESLIE WIGNALL, of 51 Ribblesdale Road, London, S.W.16, both British subjects, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: The present invention relates to a method of making a drawing of a three-dimensional object.
The invention provides a method of making a drawing of a three-dimensional object using apparatus comprising a base member having a transparent member pivotably connected thereto and means for releasably fastening the transparent member at a desired angle relative to the base member, the method comprising placing a threedimensional object to be drawn on the base member, releasably fastening the transparent member at a desired angle relative to the base member to obtain a required perspective of the object through the transparent member, and drawing the object on the transparent member or on a thin layout sheet attached to the surface thereof while viewing the object therethrough.
Preferably, the transparent member carries at least one reference mark which is aligned with a reference point on the object during drawing.
Thus, any three-dimensional object can be drawn very easily merely by following the outline of the object seen through the transparent member with a drawing implement.
The invention will now be described with reference to an embodiment shown by way of example in the accompanying drawing, wherein: Figure 1 is a perspective view of drawing apparatus in an open position, and Figure 2 is a front elevational view of the apparatus of Figure 1 in a closed position.
In the drawing, a rigid channel-shaped transparent member 1 having a flat surface 2 and parallel sides 3 is pivotably mounted on a channel-shaped base member 4 having a flat surface 5 and parallel sides 6. As can be seen from Figure 2 the base member 4 lies snugly inside the transparent member. The members 1 and 4 may be made of plastics material, e.g. transparent and opaque Perspex (Registered Trade Mark) respectively.
A bolt 7 carrying a shakeproof washer 8, a nylon washer 9 and a wingnut 10 passes through aligned apertures near the end of adjacent sides 3, 6. he transparent member 1 may be pivoted into any desired angular position relative to the base member merely by loosening the nuts 10 and held in that position by retightening the nuts 10.
The flat surface 2 carries at least one reference mark 11 which is aligned with a reference point on an object to be drawn.
The object may be placed on the surface 5 and viewed through, and drawn on, the surface 2 when inclined at an acute angle to the surface 5. Different perspectives of the object are obtained by altering the angle of inclination of the surface 2.
The resulting drawing on the surface 1 may be traced onto a layout sheet, copied, or photographed. Indeed, the object may be drawn directly onto a thin layout sheet attached to the surface 1.
The above-described method may be used by children or adults for educational or recreational purposes.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS: 1. A method of making a drawing of a three-dimensional object using apparatus comprising a base member having a transparent member pivotably connected thereto and means for releasably fastening the transparent member at a desired angle relative to the base member, the method

A method of making a drawing of a three-dimensional object using apparatus comprising a base member having a transparent member pivotably connected thereto and means for releasably fastening the transparent member at a desired angle relative to the base member, the method comprising placing a three-dimensional object to be drawn on the base member, releasably fastening the transparent member at a desired angle relative to the base member to obtain a required perspective of the object through the transparent member, and drawing the object on the transparent member or on a thin layout sheet attached to the surface thereof while viewing the object therethrough.
2. A method as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the transparent member carries at least one reference mark which is aligned with a reference point on the object during drawing.
3. A method as claimed in Claim 1 or 2, wherein a drawing on the transparent member is traced onto a layout sheet.
4. A method as claimed in Claim 1 or 2, wherein a drawing on the transparent member is photographed.
5. A method as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the transparent member has a channel-shaped cross section, the sides of the channel being pivotably attached to the base member by said fastening means.
