Abstract

157,490. Broadbridge, W., Edser, E., and Minerals Separation, Ltd. July 18, 1919. Recovering fats and oils from waste waters.- Liquid or semi-liquid suspensions in liquids are treated in froth flotation apparatus of standard type used in mineral ore concentration, for the separation of certain constituents, such as wool fat from wool-washing waters. In the apparatus shown in Fig. 3, and which is of the type shown in Specification 21650/13 and described in Specification 155,349, [both in Class 82 (ii), Washing granular &c.], the wool-washing water from the inlet M is beaten by the agitator L below a series of grids O while air is admitted through a pipe N; the minute air bubbles rise through a zone of liquid maintained comparatively quiescent by baffles P and form froth on the surface which overflows to the launders Q. The liquid in J flows out for retreatment in one or more similar apparatus, and the temperature during treatment is preferably 25-30‹ C. In the apparatus of Fig. 1 the liquid poured into the vessel A is thrashed by the agitator B of the kind described in Specification 22743/12, [Class 82 (ii), Washing granular &c.], and aerated by indrawn air; it passes through a passage C to a spitzkasten D and the froth overflows to the launder E. The liquid in the spitzkasten is sucked through the pipe G partly for retreatment in vessel A and partly to the next vessel A in series. Materials may be added to modify the liquid before treatment, for example, the viscosity may be reduced by water, or dilute acid or alkali, or the formation of froth may be assisted by soap, saponin or amyl alcohol for example; and undesired constituents may be prevented from flocculating and so being separated by the froth by addition of suitable deflocculating- agents. Specifications 6671/88, 2320/92, 18239/95, 3819/03, [Class 1, Acids, alkalies, &c.], 28057/07, 17644/08, [Class 111, Sewage &c.], 22743/12, [Class 82 (ii), Washing granular &c.], 5754/13, 15799/14, [Class 111, Sewage &c.], 23741/14, and 18023/15, [Class 111, Sewage &c.], are referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 147,184 and 147,196.
