Description

(54) TRUCK CABS (71) We, B. L. CARS LIMITED, formerly British Leyland UK Limited, a British Company of Leyland House, 174 Marylebone Road, London, NW1 5AA, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:- The present invention relates to truck cabs and more particularly to those that are designed to allow the driver to sleep in them.
According to the present invention a truck cab has a first and a second bunk located one above the other, the upper bunk comprising two halves which are so hinged to one another longitudinally of the bunk that one half can be folded flat against the other half to store it when not in use.
The two halves of the upper bunk may comprise a fixed horizontal inner portion about which the outer portion hinges to provide a shelf above the first bunk.
The invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a perspective diagrammatic representation of a truck cab having a bunk arrangement according to the present invention; Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on the line A-A of Figure 1; and Figure 3 is a perspective view of the two bunks of Figure 1 but showing a safety net in its operative and stowed positions.
A truck has a cab 1, shown only in ghosted outline, which has the usual two forward facing seats (not shown) for the driver and a co-driver.
The windscreen at the front of the cab is indicated at 2 and the dashboard is indicated in broken lines at 3.
The cab is a so-called "sleeper-cab", i.e.
it has bunks 4 and 5 for the driver and codriver, the bunks being located one above the other and extending transversely of the cab 1 behind the usual two forward facing seats 6.
The lower bunk 4 is of conventional construction and is designed to sit more or less on the portion 7a of the floor 7 of the cab. The upper bunk is split longitudinally to comprise two halves 5a and 5b respectively, the front half 5a being hingeable relative to the portion 5b in the manner shown in Figure 2 in order to reduce the extent to which the bunk 5 protrudes towards the seats 6. If desired, the upper bunk 5 may stow into a fixed horizontal position to provide a parcel shelf.
The lower bunk 4 is provided with a padded board 8 which together with the back of the seats 6 would prevent an occupant of the bunk from falling out of it. The upper bunk 5 is provided with a safety net 9 which is shown in solid lines in Figure 3 in its operative position and in dotted lines in its stowed position up against the roof of the cab.
The floor 7 of the cab preferably has the construction disclosed in our co-pending Application 4837/76 (Serial No. 1,568,213) in order to give the maximum headroom for the bunks without making the roof of the cab excessively high.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS: 1. A truck cab having a first and a second bunk located one above the other, the upper bunk comprising two halves which are so hinged to one another longitudinally of the bunk that one half can be folded flat against the other half to store it when not in use.
2. A truck cab as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the two halves of the upper bunk comprises a fixed horizontal inner portion about which the outer portion hinges to provide a shelf above the first bunk.
3. A truck cab as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2, wherein the upper bunk is provided with a safety net which is adapted to retain an occupant of the upper bunk when in use and further adapted to be stowed against the truck cab roof when the upper bunk is not in use.
