Description
(54) SUPPORTS FOR DOMESTIC BATHS, AND
COMBINATIONS OF PARTS FOR ASSEMBLY AS SUCH
SUPPORTS
(71) We, TRENT VALLEY ENGI
NEERING (RUGELEY) LIMITED, a
British Company of Blithbury Road, Rugeley,
Staffordshire, do hereby declare the invention for which we pray that a Patent may be granted to us and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention relates to supports for domestic baths and to kits of parts for assembly into such supports.
It is known, in connection with domestic baths made of synthetic resin materials, to provide a metal support arrangement which, in use, engages a frame extending around the bath under the rim thereof and which may also support the bottom of the bath. Attachable to, or forming part of, the bath support arrangement are feet which, in use, rest upon a floor.
Since synthetic resin baths are subject to fiexure under load, it is desirable that the number of points of engagement between the bath frame and the support arrangement should be increased. The present invention discloses an arrangement in which the load at two points on the bath frame can be transmitted to a single one of the bath feet.
According to one aspect of the invention, components for assembly into a domestic bath support comprise a plurality of generally Vshaped parts, the free ends of the arms of said parts being adapted to be engaged and located at respective ones of a plurality of points on said bath, means for extending transversely of the length of said bath so as to support the underside thereof, means for securing the apices of the V-shaped parts in each pair to respective ends of said transversly-extending means, whereby the parts in each pair are located, in use, on opposite sides of said bath, and a plurality of feet each having a threaded element which is engageable with said transversely-extending means, for adjusting the height of said bath above a floor.
According to another aspect, the invention resides in a support for a domestic bath, assembled from the components indicated above.
According to yet another aspect, the invention resides in a domestic bath provided with a support as above defined.
Examples of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows, pictorially, a domestic bath and an associated support arrangement,
Figure 2 is a transverse section through
Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a view on arrow 3 in Figure 2,
Figure 4 shows a detail of the attachment of a bath support arm to the bath, and
Figure 5 shows, pictorially, details of a preferred embodiment of part of a bath support assembly.
As shown in Figure 1 a synthetic resin bath 10 includes a metal frame member 11 secured to the bath under the rim thereof. The frame member 11 is conveniently in the form of angle section. The bath 10 also includes, bonded to the bottom of the fibreglass portion thereof, a reinforcing element 12 of wood or other suitable material which will readily accept screws.
The bath 10 is supported on a floor by means of a bath support assembly. This bath support assembly comprises four V-shaped parts 13, two of the parts 13 being on one side of the bath 10, and another two of the parts 13 being on the opposite side of the bath 10.
The arms of the part 13 are of equal length and in the example shown define an included angle of 60 , but in alternative embodiments may define angles of between 40 and 100 .
In a preferred embodiment, however, the included angle is 90 , whereby the parts 1.3 may conveniently be stowed for transport under the bath rim.
As shown in Figures 1 to 4 the part 13 is formed of a single piece of channel section, the open side of the channel being directed inwardly of the angle defined between the arms.
It will be understood however that in alterna tive embodiments the open side of the channel may be directed outwardly of the angle. The free ends of each of the arms of the part 13 are provided with suitable means for engaging the bath frame 11.
As shown in Figure 4 this bath-frame engaging means comprises a portion pressed from the base of the channel section to define a pair of aligned openings 15. Eight tongues are pressed from the angle section of the bath frame 11 and are dimensioned so as to be able to pass through the openings 15. In addition, tags 17, 18 are pressed out of the tongues 16
so as to locate on either side of the portion 14 and thereby render the part 13 captive on the tongue 16. The tag 17 is deformed resiliently into the plane of the remainder of the tongue
16 as the latter passes through the openings 15.
Two further channel section members 19 are joggled as shown in Figure 2 and are pierced for attachment to the re-inforcing element 12 by means of screws 20. The members 19 extend at right angles to the length
of the bath 10 and are, in use, secured to the element 12 so that the ends of the members
19 lie adjacent the apices of the parts 13. The ends of the members 19 have holes which extend through the bottom of the channel section and which.can be aligned with holes in the channel bottoms of the apices of the parts 13, whereby the threaded stem 21 of a bath foot 22 can pass through the aligned holes.
The parts 13 may be spaced from the members 19 by any convenient means, as for example by means of nuts upon the stem 21 between a part 13 and the adjacent end of mem ber 19. Parts 13 and members 19 are similarly secured on the stems 21 by means of nuts.
As indicated above the parts 13 preferably have included angles of 90" so that these parts may be positioned for transport or storage, under the rim of the bath 10. Where it is found necessary to make the included angles of the parts 13 substantially different from 90" and the components of the bath support are still required to be stowed under the bath rim, each of the parts 13 may comprise, as shown in Figure 5, a V-bracket 30 and a pair of identical bar members 31. The V-arms of the bracket 30 define sockets which have an included angle equal to that required for the assembled part 13 as a whole. The respective sockets receive one end of each of the bar members 31, and these sockets may be provided with tangs which engage suitable recesses in the corresponding ends of the members 31, on the same general lines as the arrangement of Figure 4, to retain the members 31 on the bracket 30. The other ends of the members 31 are provided with a pressed-out portion, also as disclosed in Figure 4.
In any of the foregoing embodiments there may be located, within the ends of the members 19, an element 32 which is retained in position by the stem 21 of the bath foot 22,
and also by the clamping action provided by
the nuts on the stem 21. The element 32 which may be of tubular section, is positioned so as to have an outwardly-directed face 32a which lies in the plane of an inside face of a bath panel, indicated at 33 in Figure 2. On the face
32a is a suitable means, as for example a hole
34 for receiving a self-tapping screw, for
securing the bath panel 33. The panel 33 may thus have its top edge located under the bath rim and be secured to the parts 32.
It will be understood that the parts 13 and members 19 may comprise any suitable rigid
section, and further that the parts 13 may be located on and/or engaged with the bath frame
11 by any suitable means.
In a preferred arrangement the ends of the members 19 and the apices of the parts 13,
or of the brackets 30, are provided with captive nuts through which the stems 21 pass.
In such an arrangement the threaded engagement of the stems 21 with captive nuts provides the necessary spacing between the members 19 and the parts 13, or brackets 30, and a single additional locknut may be used to prevent rotation of the bath foot 22.
Finally where the shape of the bath causes a substantial overhang at either or both of its ends, an additional part 13, and an associated foot may be secured to bath frame 11 at the, or each overhung end, to provide an additional support.
