Discharging. - A discharging - device for a shaft furnace comprises two superposed grates a, b, one of which is reciprocated relatively to the other. The discharged material is removed from the floor c by a rake e having pivoted blades d. Either the upper or the lower grate may be reciprocated, and the actuating-mechanism may comprise a crankshaft and connecting-links. The bars of the two grates are preferably set at an angle to one another, and the spaces between the bars may be reduced at parts where the material in the furnace tends to descend too quickly.
