Description
(54) IMPROVEMENTS IN LOCKING ARRANGEMENTS
(71) We, ADAMS SECURITY ENGINEER
ING (ROTARY SHUTTERS) LIMITED, a British company of Crossgates, Eastside, Kirkintilloch, Glasgow, G66 1QB, Great Britain. do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:
This invention relates to a locking arrangement for a roller shutter door.
Roller shutter doors are well known for use in securing the entrance of shops, offices and industrial premises. Such known doors are generally locked by means of a cut key which operates a lock having so called shooting arms which extend from the sides of the door so as to engage in holes in the stationary door frame. Unfortunately, such cut keys and their associated locks are relatively weak so that commonly, if the door is not fully closed for some reason, for example, an obstruction, so that the shooting arms are not properly aligned with their holes and the key is turned, the key is broken or bent in the lock or the lock damaged so that the premises cannot be secured until the damage is repaired or a new key obtained. This arrangement is clearly disadvantageous.
An object of the present invention is to obviate or mitigate the aforementioned disadvantage.
According to the present invention there is provided a locking arrangement for a roller shutter door and comprising a pair of shooting arms slidable partly within a casing, an operating cog journalled within the casing and having profiles adapted to cooperate with recesses in the arms so as to slide the latter when the cog is turned, a socket formed in the cog and adapted to removably receive a handle for turning the cog, an access opening in the casing through which said handle must pass to engage in the socket, a lock mounted on the casing adapted to be operated by a cut key and which is provided with a locking arm which is able to lock at least one of the shooting arms and which operates a flap mounted in the casing so as to cover said access opening when the lock is locked so as to prevent access to the cog.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. 1 is a sectional view through part of a locking arrangement according to the invention; and
Figs. 2 to 5 are detail views of parts of the arrangement shown in Fig. 1.
Referring now to the drawings, a locking arrangement for a roller shutter door is shown generally at 1 and comprises a casing 2 within which a pair of shooting arms 3 and 4 (shown in detail in Fig. 2) are slidable. The shooting arms are preferably provided with rod-like extensions (not shown) which co-operate with holes in a door frame.
The shooting arms 3, 4 are provided with recesses 5 which co-operate with cam profiles 6 on a cog 7, the latter being journalled in the casing 2.
The cog 7 is provided with a square socket 7A which can be engaged through an access opening (not shown) in the casing 2 by a handle having a tapered square shank.
Rotation of the cog 7 in a clockwise direction, as shown in Fig. 1, causes the shooting arms 3 and 4 to withdraw from their holes and rotation in an anti-clockwise direction causes the shooting arms 3 and 4 to enter their holes. The cog 7 is shown in detail in Fig. 3.
A lock 8 is mounted on the casing and is operable by a cut key 9 (Fig. 4). The lock is provided with a locking arm 10 which co-operates with a cut-out portion 11 on the shooting arm 4 to lock the latter.
Furthermore, a flap 12 (shown in detail in
Fig. 5) is provided in the casing which is co-operable with the locking arm 10 so as to be moved by the latter between a first position as shown in Fig. 1 in which it covers the access opening in the casing when the lock is in the locked position, and a second position in which access to the socket 7A is unimpeded.
Clearly, with the above-described arrangement a strong handle may be used to operate the shooting arms thereby avoiding breakage or damage and the lock is merely used to lock the shooting arms and to cover the access opening to prevent intruders inserting another handle or similar tool.
In a modified embodiment the shooting arms 3 and 4 are spring biassed outwardly so that the roller shutter door is self-fastening. Moreover, to make operation easier and smoother more than four teeth may be provided on the cog 7 and the teeth may be formed by pins. In the embodiment described above the locking arm engages the shooting arms to prevent movement thereof. In a modification the locking arm is pivotally connected to the flap and an abutment on the flap secures the shooting arms.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS:
1. A locking arrangement for a roller shutter door and comprising a pair of shooting arms slidable partly within a casing, an operating cog journalled within the casing and having profiles adapted to co-operate with recesses in the arms so as to slide the latter when the cog is turned, a socket formed in the cog and adapted to removably receive a handle for turning the cog, an access opening in the casing through which said handle must pass to engage in the socket, a lock mounted on the casing adapted to be operated by a cut key and which is provided with a locking arm which is able to lock at least one of the shooting arms and which operates a flap mounted in the casing so as to cover said access opening when the lock is locked so as to prevent access to the cog.
2. A locking arrangement as claimed in claim 1, in which said socket is of square cross-section.
3. A locking arrangement as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2, in which the shooting arms are provided with rod-like extensions co-operable with holes in a door frame.
4. A locking arrangement as claimed in any preceding claim, in which the locking arm co-operates with a cut-out in one of the shooting arms.
5. A locking arrangement as claimed in any preceding claim, in which the shooting arms are spring biassed outwardly.
6. A locking arrangement as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 3 or claim 5 when appended thereto, in which the flap is pivotally connected to the locking arm and an abutment member on the flap secures the shooting arms.
7. A locking arrangement for a roller shutter door substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
