Description

(54) A SYSTEM FOR FORMING A FRAME (71) I, GEORGE CIANCIMINO, a British subject of 45, Evelyn Gardens, London, S.W.7, do hereby declare the invention, for which I pray that a patent may be granted to me, and the method by which it is to be peformed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention relates to a system for forming a frame, such as a picture frame.
Conveniently, picture frames are made from uniform strips of material which may be cut to the required length to provide a picture of any given size. The strips may be mitred at their ends and held together by suitable locking means. It is desirable that such locking means should be invisible and provide as rigid a structure as possible Accordingly, the present invention pro- vides a system for forming a frame comprising elongate frame members each having a channel formed along one edge thereof and an inwardly directed lip at or adjacent the mouth of the channel, and at least one connecting member having projecting arms for insertion into respective adjacent frame members between the base of each channel and the lip, each connecting member being provided with means for urging each arm thereof outwardly away from the base of the corresponding channel towards the lip to lock the arm firmly into that elongate member, a channel being formed on one of the outer side walls of the frame members for beading or like decorative material.
Preferably, two inwardly turned lips are provided on the two side walls, respectively, at the mouth of the channel.
Furthermore, the lips may be angled downwardly towards the base of the channel so as to cooperate with corresponding inclined surfaces which project from each connecting member, and thereby draw the sides of the channel together and a said connecting member inserted in the channel is urged away from the base of the channel.
The invention will now be described in more detail, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is an exploded perspective view of a corner of a frame; Figure 2 is a cross-section of an elongate frame member in accordance with the invention; and Figure 3 is a side elevation, partly in section, of two corner frame members connected together.
In Figure 1, two elongate frame members 1 and 2 having ends 3 and 4 are to be connected together by a connecting member 5 having arms 6 and 7. The ends 3 and 4 may be cut at any angle relative to the axis of the frame members and, as shown in Figure 3, if they are cut at 45" to the axes on frame members, a right angled mitred joint can be formed. However, the ends 3 and 4 can be cut at any desired angle so that the frame members 1 and 2 form the required angle when the ends 3 and 4 are brought into abutment.
The arms 6 and 7 of the connecting member 5, which form the same angle as the frame members 1 and 2 when brought into abutment, are inserted into a channel 8 formed along the upper edge of each of the frame members 1. As shown in Figure 3, the arms of the connecting member 5 may be inserted right into the channels 8 so that when the ends 3 and 4 are in abutment, the connecting member 5 is invisible.
In Figure 2, which is a cross-section through the frame member 1, the channel 8 can be seen clearly formed along the upper edge of the frame member 1. In this particular embodiment, a second channel 9 is formed along the lower edge of the frame member 1 to receive a picture and glass therefore when the frame members are formed into a picture frame. The frame member 1 thus has a substantially H-shaped cross-section. In addition, a shallow channel 10 is formed in one side wall of the member 1 to receive beading or some decorative strip.
A pair of inwardly facing lips 11 and 12 are provided on the inner faces of both side walls of the channel 8 at their upper ends remote from the base 13 of the channel. The lips 11 and 12 form abutments 14 and 15 having angled and downwardly inclined abutment surfaces. The cross-section of each arm of the connecting member 5 substantially conforms to the shape of the channel 8 beneath the lips 11 and 12. A pair of ridges 16 and 17 are provided along each upper edge of the connecting member arms 6, 7 and have inclined surfaces which correspond to those of the abutments 14 and 15. Each arm of the connecting member 5 therefore fits snugly into the part of the channel below the lips 11 and 12.
Each arm of the connecting member 5 is provided with a pair of threaded bores 18 for receiving small grub screws 19. When the arms of the connecting member 5 are pushed firmly home in the channels 8 of adjacent elongate members 1 and 2 and the ends 3 and 4 thereof are in abutment, the grub screws 19 are screwed into the bores from the mouth of the channel 8. The ends of the screws 19 act against the base 13 of the channel 8 and force the arms 6 and 7 upwardly against the abutments 14 and 15. The inclined surfaces of the abutments 14 and 15 cooperate with the inclined surfaces of the ridges 16 and 17 to draw the side walls of the channel 8 inwardly against the arms of the connecting member 5. This arrangement not only tends to lock the arms of the connnecting member 5 into the frame members 1 and 2, but also provides a very rigid structure.
In Figure 2, when the frame members are connected together to form a picture frame, suspension means may be conveniently be provided from strips of material having portions of the same cross-section as the arms of the connecting members 5 and previously inserted into the channel 8 so as to lie intermediate the ends of the upper frame member. A bracket (not shown) is mounted on the upper surface of the strip of material having the same cross-section as that shown in Figure 2 for the arm of the connecting member 5. This bracket projects into the mouth of the channel and receives a wire or any other means for suspending the picture frame on the wall, WHAT I CLAIM IS:- 1. A system for forming a frame com- prising elongate frame members each having a channel formed along one edge thereof and an inwardly directed lip at or adjacent the mouth of the channel, and a connecting member having projecting arms for insertion into respective adjacent frame members between the base of each channel and the lip, each connecting member being provided with means for urging each arm thereof outwardly away from the base of the corresponding channel towards the lip to lock the arms firmly into that elongate member, a channel being formed on one of the outer sidewalls of the frame members for beading or like decorative material.
2. A system as claimed in claim 1, wherein two inwardly turned lips are provided on the two side walls, respectively, at the mouth of the channel.
3. A system as claimed in claim 2, wherein the lips are angled downwardly towards the base of the channel so as to cooperate with corresponding inclined surfaces which project from each connecting member and thereby draw the sides of the channel together when a said connecting member inserted in the channel is urged away from the base of the channel, 4, A system as claimed in claim 3, wherein each frame member has a substantially H-shaped cross-section, the lower part of the H forming a second channel for receiving a picture or the like.
5. A system as claimed in anyone of claims 1 to 4, wherein each arm of the connecting member is provided with threaded bores for receiving grub screws to urge each arm away from the base of the channels.
