Description
(54) BANDAGE
(71) We, HALDANE & DODD LTD., a
British Company, of 4 North Park Road,
Harrogate, Yorkshire, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: The invention relates to self adhesive bandages.
Known bandages, which consist solely of a length of material and are used for dressing wounds have the disadvantage that they are somewhat unstable in position and liable to slip. Available adhesive dressings and tapes are not always suitable for a particular application.
The aim of the present invention is to provide a self adhesive bandage which adheres to itself on application so that the conformation of the applied dressing is more stable than is the case when a conventional bandage is used.
According to the present invention there is provided a bandage comprising a length of material having on each side thereof a non-continuous coating of an adhesive, -so that when the bandage is applied said coatings can adhere and secure the bandage without impairing its porosity.
When the bandage is used as a dressing the adhesive on one side comes into contact with the adhesive on the opposite side of the bandage to provide bonding at the points of contact. The completed dressing is thus comparatively stable and fixed in form and position.
Preferably the adhesive is disposed in strips angled relative to one another on opposite sides of the bandage. The angle between the strips of adhesive on one side of the material and the strips of adhesive on the other side of the material is preferably substantially 90". The strips on one side of the bandage material may extend substantially longitudinally of the material, the strips of adhesive on the other side the bandage material extending substantially transversely of the material.
The use of an elastic adhesive is preferred to ensure the preservation of any inherent elasticity of the bandage material. Indeed, the elastic adhesive strips may provide a substantial contribution to the elasticity of the bandage, such contribution of course being taken into account when designing a bandage to have certain required characteristics.
Advantageously the elastic adhesive material comprises latex, which adheres to itself but not to other materials and in particular not to skin.
The present invention will hereinafter be further described by way of example with referenec to the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a portion of a bandage constructed in accordance with the present invention; and
Fig. 2 is a plan view from underneath of the bandage of Fig. 1.
The bandage 10 comprises a rectangular strip 11 of woven material the upper side 12 of which (Fig. 1) is provided with equally spaced longitudinally extending parallel strips 13 of latex rubber. The underneath 14 (Fig. 2) of tkt bandage is provided with equally spaced parallel strips 15 extending transversely of bandage. The latex strips 13 and 15 are applied with the latex initially in liquid form, and allowed to dry.
The bandage is interleaved with paper or suitable film and rolled in the usual way before being stored until its use is required.
In the liquid state the latex forms a bond with the material of the bandage. When dry the latex is capable of forming a bond with itself on contact, but not with the human skin or the material of any dressings used. Thus when applied, for example by wrapping around the area of a wound, the bandage adheres to itself only at those positions where the longitudinal latex strips 13 cross the transverse latex strips 15 and the bandage does not adhere to any portions of skin with which it comes into contact or with any other dressings used in conjunction with the bandage.
The relatively orthogonal dispositions of the latex strips on opposite sides of the bandage ensures the porosity of the bandage when in place since porous passages of square profile are produced between the latex strips when a portion of one side 12 of the bandage overlaps a portion of the other side 14. Conceivably other materials could be used instead of latex for the elastic adhesive. Thus an artificial elastomeric material with similar properties to altex could be used. The elastic properties of the adhesive ensure that any inherent elasticity of the bandage material is not nullified by the strips but rather is enhanced.
The invention is not limited to the precise details of the foregoing and variations can be made thereto. For example, the adhesive can be applied in any convenient practicable form, for example as an array of areas or a cross-hatch pattern. The material of the bandage can be non-woven, i.e. knitted. Many other variations are possible within the scope of the following
Claims (9)
1. A bandage comprising a length of material having on each side thereof a noncontinuous coating of an adhesive, so that when the bandage is applied said coatings can adhere and secure the bandage without impairing its porosity.
2. A bandage as claimed in claim 1, wherein the adhesive is a self-adhesive substance which will adhere to itself but not to skin or other dressings.
3. A bandage as claimed in claim 1 or 2, wherein the adhesive is elastic.
4. A bandage as claimed in claim 1, 2 or 3, wherein the adhesive is arranged in discrete areas on each side of the material.
5. A bandage as claimed in any preceding claim and comprising a length of woven material one side of which is provided with attached parallel strips of an elastic adhesive substance disposed in a first orientation on the material and the other side of which is provided with attached parallel strips of an elastic adhesive substance disposed in a first orientation on the material and the other side of which is provided with attached parallel strips of the elastic adhesive substance disposed in a second orientation on the material.
6. A bandage as claimed in any preceding claim in which the adhesive comprises latex.
7. A bandage as claimed in claim 5, in which the strips of adhesive on the one side of the bandage material are disposed substantially at right angles to the strips of adhesive on the other side of the bandage material.
8. A bandage as claimed in claim 7 in which the strips of adhesive on the one side of the bandage material extend substantially parallel to the length of the material, and the strips of adhesive on the other side of the bandage material extend substantially parallel to the width of the material.
9. A bandage substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
