Description

(54) A FOLDABLE BABY CARRIAGE (71) We, PEREGO-PINES S.p.A., of Via De Gasperi, 50 20043-Arcore, Italy, a Joint Stock Company organised under the laws of Italy, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: The present invention relates to a baby carriage foldable in width and shortenable in height and particularly to an improvement in, or modification of, the baby carriage described and claimed in Patent Application No. 10775/76 (Serial No. 1,507,592).
In that Application there is described and claimed a foldable baby carriage including a pair of substantially parallel spaced apart elongate handles and a pair of front wheel supporting legs, two members pivotally connected intermediate their ends to form an X-shaped cross-piece, each of the ends of the members being connected to an associated sleeve, two of the sleeves being upper sleeves slidably mounted on respective ones of the handles and the other two sleeves being lower sleeves slidably mounted on respective ones of said front legs, the upper sleeves being secured to respective ones of the front legs and the lower sleeves being secured to respective ones of the handles, and a control member being connected to the upper sleeves through tie rods so that movement of the control member in a direction parallel to the handles causes the members of the crosspiece to be moved closer together thus causing the carriage to be shortened and the handles and legs to be moved laterally inwardly.
The present invention provides a baby carriage as claimed in claim 1 of Patent Application No. 10775/76 which further includes a footrest, an adjusting device for adjusting the footrest in a selected one of a plurality of positions, said footrest being adapted to be automatically folded when the baby carriage is folded, and a wheel locating device adapted to control lateral movement of the front wheels and to maintain them in the correct spacing for use, when the carriage is erected.
The improvements of the present invention may also be applied to the baby carriages described and claimed in Patent Application No. 11210/76 (Serial No. 1,507,775) and Patent Application No. 34227/76 (Serial No. 1,508,689). A preferred embodiment of a baby carriage according to the invention will now be described by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a side view of the baby carriage according to the invention wherein for sake of clarity, the seatback has been shown in phantom lines and the seat and footrest have been omitted; Figure 2 is a top view of said baby carriage; Figure 3 is a front view of the baby carriage in its position ready for use; and Figure 4 is a front view of the baby carriage in the folded position, Figure 5 is a front view of the footrest supporting structure in its position ready for use, and shown in phantom lines in its folded position; Figure 6 is a section along line X-Y Y1-K-K1-Z of Figure 5; Figure 7 is a portion of the enlarged crosssection line L-L of Figure 5; and Figures 8 and 9 also show on an enlarged scale a side and central detail of Figure 6.
The main features of the carriage are described in greater detail in one or more of our co-pending Patent Applications 10775/76, 11210/76 and 34227/76, (Serial Nos. 1,507,592, 1,507,775 and 1,508,689, to which reference is directed.
For the sake of clarity parts described in one or more of the co-pending Applications have been shown in letters, for example M indicates the handles, RRl the wheels, G the front legs and G1 the rear legs, S the seat-back and S1 the seat and C the upper sleeves and C1 the lower sleeves and B the armrests.
The main features of the baby carriage described in the above mentioned Patent Applications filed by the same Applicant and shown in Figures 1 to 4 of the accompanying drawings are essentially as follows: (a) a device a comprising a cross-piece the ends of which are integral with an equal number of sliding sleeves the upper sleeves on the handles and the lower sleeves on the front legs of the baby carriage and a knob located between the upper sleeves and connected thereto by means of two tie rods, upward movement of the knob causing the baby carriage to both fold in width as well as to shorten in height; (b) a tubular structure B forming armrests of the seat, each armrest having the shape of a U lying on one side, with the upper arm fixed to the lower portion of the associated handles and the lower arm to the respective lower sleeve, and a seat structure hinged on the lower arms and integral with two longitudinal rods which are each welded at their midpoint to a cylindrical portion of an associated small telescopic tube the sliding inner portion of which terminates at the end of an associated one of the lower sleeves, whereby when the lower sleeves are urged downwardly, the sides of the seat are also pushed down and the centre portion is folded up in "book" fashion; (c) triangular plates hollow at the centre which connect each rear leg to the respective front leg and side tie rods which connect the rear leg with the lower end of the sliding sleeve on the front leg, whereby the two legs come closer to each other when the lower sleeves are moved down; (d) a semi rigid structure of the seat and seat-back, including adjusting means e by which the seat-back is inclinable in various positions with respect to the vertical, by virtue of the connection of the cross-piece and tie rods of the central knob to the upper sleeves through two vertical members and two associated adjusting mechanisms including a strip having spaced holes therein, engaged by a spring loaded pin; (e) an inclined rear cross-piece with two upper ends hinged to the rear legs of the baby carriage and two lower ends hinged to two tie rods which are in turn hinged to the rear legs, which ensures automatic efficient folding of the rear legs of the baby carriage by simply actuating the control knob.
The portions of the baby carriage not described earlier have been indicated with reference numbers.
An adjusting device for the footrest (see figure 2) essentially comprises on each side a strap 1 the upper end 11 of which is fixed to lower sleeve Cl and hence to the crosspiece end of device a, the lower end 1l being slightly curved and provided with one or more holes, and also tie rod 2 shaped so as to have one end 31 inserted into one of the holes of the respective strap 1 and the other end 21 inserted in one of a plurality of holes provided in a side piece 3 of a foot rest.
The latter essentially comprises (see figures 2 and 5) two plastic side pieces 3, curved at their downward ends and a central strip 4, as well metal tie rods 5 and 6 obliquely connecting associated side pieces 3 with the central strip 4. The rods 5, 6 have their ends formed at right angles to fit in suitable recesses 31 41 in the respective side pieces, 4, (see figures 7 to 9), so that when the baby carriage itself is folded by raising the central knob of device a the foot rest also folds.
In the folded position, the footrest may act also as a support for standing the baby carriage in the vertical position.
Finally, the improvement includes a device for maintaining the front wheels R laterally at the proper distance for use and positively bring them close together when the baby carriage is folded. The device comprise two tie rods 7, 71 (see figures 2, 3) and a central sleeve 8.
The laterally outer ends of the tie rods 7, 71 are each curled around a respective one of two couplings 9 located on the front legs G close to the wheels R, the inner ends of said tie rods being fixed to sleeve 8, the one indicated 7 connected by a straight portion and the one indicated 71 by a bent portion sliding in a suitable slot (not shown in the drawings) in sleeve 8, when the baby carriage is folded.
