Jacquards ; cards and the like, punching. - In electrically operated jacquard and card-punching machines, the needles controlling lifting-wires are divided electrically into two groups corresponding to the electrically conducting and non-conducting parts of the pattern and the selection within these groups for the tyings or bindings is effected mechanically by cards &c. either for both groups simultaneously or for one after the other. The electrical selection is effected in the known manner by means of a rotary pattern surface, step-operated feelers connected to contact bars, and step-operated brushes connecting the bars to contacts for the individual solenoids s of which the cores g are initially pressed out into the position shown by mechanically-operated wires y so that they block holes x in tubes. Auxiliary needles h are initially raised against the action of springs z by a plate o acting on collars w on the needles, and when the plate descends the needles h corresponding to energized solenoids s pass through the holes x, the cores g of these solenoids being withdrawn to the right, while the needles corresponding to the other solenoids are held up by the cores. The needles n for controlling the lifting-wires t are thus divided into two groups which are acted upon respectively by cards i, k cut to control the bindings for the ground and figure. The cards are so perforated that each does not interfere with the other. Separate cards acting in succession may otherwise be used, or one card with the bindings cut in alternate rows. A constructional form of apparatus is described in which the various parts are operated by cams, rods, and levers from a rotating shaft and the pattern barrel is rotated by ratchet and worm gearing.
