Description

(54) LUBRICANT COMPOSITIONS (71) We, CIBA-GEIGY AG. a Swiss Body Corporate of Basle, Switzerland do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: The present invention relates to lubricant compositions.
According to the present invention, there is provided a lubricant composition having reduced deposition tendencies, comprising (a), as synthetic lubricant basestock, a tetraester derived from pentaerythritol and a mono-caboxylic acid containing 5 to 18 carbon atoms, or a mixture of such acids; and (b), as antioxidant, a compound having the formula
wherein R1 and R3 are the same or different and each is a straight-chain or branched chain alkyl group having from 1 to 12 carbon atoms. Preferably Rl and R3 are each a t-butyl group.
Examples of lubricant basestocks for use in the lubricant compositions of the invention are pentaerythritol tetrapelargonate, pentaerythritol tetraoleate and a pentaerythritol tetraester derived from a mixture of monocarboxylic acids having, on average, 7-8 carbon atoms.
The proportion of the compound of formula I in the compositions of the invention is preferably within the range of from 0.0001% to 10%, more preferably from 0.2-5% and especially from 0.5% to 3% by weight, based on the total weight of the composition.
The compositions of the present invention may, if desired, contain a minor proportion of one or more additives known to improve the properties of lubricating oils e.g. other antioxidants, metal passivators, rust inhibitors, viscosity-index improvers, pour-point depressants, dispersants or detergents as well as extreme-pressure or antiwear additives.
Suitable supplementary antioxidants include the tertiary alkyl-phenyl a- and ss- naphthylamines described and claimed in British Patent Specification No. 1,046,353 and their mixtures with dioctyl diphenylamine as described in British Patent Specification No.
1,180,385; oxidised amines as described in British Patent Specification No. 1,224,556; other alkylated and non-alkylated aromatic amines and mixtures thereof; e.g. N-phenyl-anaphthylamine, phenothiazine; other hindered phenols such as 2,6-ditertiary-butyl pcresol, 4,4'-(2,6-tert-butylphenol) and 2,4,6-triisopropylphenol; alkyl, aryl or alkaryl phosphites such as triphenyl phosphite and diphenyldecylphosphite, esters of thiodipropionic acid for instance dilauryl thiodipropionate; salts of carbamic or dithiophosphoric acid, for example antimony diamyl-dithio-carbamate and zinc diamyldithiophosphate; free radical antioxidants and their precursors such as amine oxides and nitroxides; and complexing agents for metals or pre-formed metal complexes e.g. metal salts and complexes of organic chelating agents such as copper bis-(trifluoro-acetylacetonates), copper phthalocyanines and the mono sodium salt of the tributyl ester of E.D.T.A.
Examples of suitable metal passivators include those of the following types: (a) for copper; for example, benzotriazole, 5,5'-methylene-bisbenzotriazole, tetrahydrobenzotriazole, 2,5-dimercapto-thiadiazole, salicylidene-propylene-diamine, salts of salicylalaminoguanidine and quinizarin; (b) for magnesium; for example, propyl gallate (b) for lead; for example, sebacic acid.
Rust inhibitors which may be employed in the lubricant compositions include those of the following groups: (a) Organic acids, and their esters, metal salts and anhydrides, for example N-oleoylsarcosine, sorbitan mono-oleate, lead naphthenate and dodecenylsuccinic anhydride.
(b) Nitrogen containing materials, for example (i) primary, secondary or tertiary aliphatic or cycloaliphatic amines and amine salts of organic and inorganic acids, for example morpholine, stearylamine and triethanola mine caprylate.
(ii) heterocyclic compounds, for example, imidazolines, and oxazolines; (c) Phosphorus containing materials, for example inorganic phosphates, phosphonic acid and amine phosphates.
(d) Sulphur containing materials, for example barium dinonylnaphthalene-sulphonates.
Suitable viscosity index improvers or pour point depressants are, for instance, polyacrylates, polybutenes and and polyvinyl-pyrrolidones.
Examples of dispersant or detergents include metal sulphonates especially calcium, barium, and magnesium salts metal phenates and polybutenyl-succinimides.
Extreme pressure or antiwear additives appropriate for use in the lubricant composition include sulphur-and/or phosphorous-and/or halogen-containing material for instance sulphurised sperm oil, tritolyl phosphate and chlorinated paraffins.
The specific synthetic lubricant basestock compositions of the present invention are suitable for use as aviation oils, crankcase oils. compressor oils or textile lubricants. When used as lubricant compositions for synethetic fibres. they may be in the form of aqueous emulsions containing other components such as surfactants and antistatic agents.
The following Example further illustrates the present invention.
Example The following tests were conducted in a pentaerythritol tetra-ester having a viscosity of 6 csS at 210 F and derived from monocarboxylic acids of chain length of 7 to 8 carbon atoms, being mostly straight-chain but containing some chain branching. 0.5 g of this ester was weighed into a glass dish of 2 inch diameter and placed in an oven, equipped with a fan and maintained at 225 - 230"C., for a period of four hours. The percentage weight loss of the ester was determined and the appearance of the ester was noted.
The experiment was repeated but incorporating into the ester 1.0% by weight of the following compounds:

WHAT WE CLAIM IS: 1. A lubricant composition comprising (a), as synthetic lubricant basestock, a tetraester derived from pentaerythritol and a monocarboxylic acid containing 5 to 18 carbon atoms, or a mixture of such acids; and (b), as antioxidant, a compound having the formula:
wherein R1 and R3 are the same or different and each is a straight-chain or branched chain alkyl group having from 1 to 12 carbon atoms.
2. A composition as claimed in claim 1 wherein R1 and R3 are each a t-butyl group.
3. A composition as claimed in either of the preceding claims wherein the lubricant basestock is pentaerythritol, tetrapelargonate. pentaerythritol tetraoleate or a pentaerythritol tetraester derived from a mixture of monocarboxylic acids having, on average, 7 to 8 carbon atoms.
4. A composition as claimed in any of the preceding claims wherein the proportion of the compound of formula I is within the range from 0.001% to 10% by weight, based on the total weight of the composition.
5. A composition as claimed in claim 4 wherein the proportion of the compound of formula I is within the range from 0.2 to 5% by weight, based on the total weight of the composition.
6. A composition as claimed in claim 5 wherein the proportion of the compound of formula I is within the range from 0.5 to 3% by weight, based on the total weight of the composition.
7. A composition as claimed in any of the preceding claims wherein one or more further additives known to improve the properties of lubricating oils, are present.

  4. 4. A composition as claimed in any of the preceding claims wherein the proportion of the compound of formula I is within the range from 0.001% to 10% by weight, based on the total weight of the composition.
  5. 5. A composition as claimed in claim 4 wherein the proportion of the compound of formula I is within the range from 0.2 to 5% by weight, based on the total weight of the composition.
  6. 6. A composition as claimed in claim 5 wherein the proportion of the compound of formula I is within the range from 0.5 to 3% by weight, based on the total weight of the composition.
  7. 7. A composition as claimed in any of the preceding claims wherein one or more further additives known to improve the properties of lubricating oils, are present.
  8. 8. A composition as claimed in claim 7 wherein the additives are further antioxidants,
    metal passivators, rust inhibitors, viscosity-index improvers, pour-point depressants, dispersants or detergents, or extreme-pressure or anti-wear additives.
  9. 9. A composition as claimed in claim 1 substantially as described with reference to the Example.
