Description

(54) DRAUGHT EXCLUDER (71) I, MINNIE ADELAIDE WISE, a British Subject and New Zealand citizen, of 32a Kiwi Esplanade, Mangere Bridge, Auckland, New Zealand, do hereby declare the invention for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention relates to a door provided with a draught restrict or for restricting or preventing the flow of air under the door.
It is an undesirable feature of some doors that, due to either faulty manufacture of the door or surround, the hanging of a door, the particularly exposed position of the doorway or a combination of these factors, the doors permit the passage of a substantial draught between the bottom edge of the door and the floor.
Many of the existing devices for excluding or restricting draughts are permanent fixtures on or. adjacent the bottom edge of the door. These devices are often unsightly and can create a cleaning problem.
The aim of this invention is the provision of a door provided with a draught restrictor which is mounted on the door without requiring mounting means that mark the door and which can be readily detached from the door for cleaning purposes.
In accordance with a first aspect of the present invention there is provided a door provided with a draught restrictor for restricting or preventing the flow of air under the door, the restrictor comprising a length of draught inhibiting material arranged at one side of the door adjacent an edge thereof which, in use of the door, is lowermost, and an elastic or otherwise lengthwise adjustable flexible retaining strip attached to the length of material at its ends and so extending around the door as to releasably retain the length of material in place.
In accordance with a second aspect of the present invention there is provided a door provided with a draught restrict or for restricting or preventing the flow of air under the door, the restrictor comprising two lengths of draught inhibiting material arranged one at each side of the door adjacent an edge thereof which, in use of the door, its lowermost, and two elastic or otherwise lengthwise adjustable flexible retaining strips interconnecting the lengths of material at their ends and so extending around edges of the door adjoining the first-mentioned edge as to releasably retain the lengths of material in place Embodiments of the present invention will now be more particularly described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a draught restrictor in accordance with one embodiment of the invention, the door being omitted for the sake of clarity; and Figure 2 is a plan view of a draught restrictor in accordance with another embodiment of the invention, the door again being omitted.
Referring now to Fig. 1 of the drawings there is shown a draught restrictor which is fitted to a door (not shown) for the purpose of restricting or preventing the flow of air under the door. The restrictor comprises a length of draught inhibiting material 1 which may be any suitable substance, such as a length of fabric or felt.
It is preferred, however, for the draught inhibiting material to be a length of sheep skin with fleece attached or other such "fluffy" natural or synthetic material. The length of material 1 corresponds to the width of the door and is conveniently one to three inches in width. If desired, a narrow length of backing board 2 may be glued or otherwise attached to the length of material 1. The backing board 2 gives a degree of rigidity to the length of material which may be an advantage when the restrictor is being fitted to or its position altered on the door.
A retaining strip 3 is attached to each end 4, 4' of the length of material 1 and holds the length of material in position on the door.
If the retaining strip 3 is an elastic material, one strip approximately the same length as the length of material 1 is needed.
This strip engages around the door and its elastic tension holds the length of material 1 in place adjacent the bottom of the door.
The draught restrictor can be removed from the door by slipping the retaining strip 3 down and under the door.
Alternatively, the retaining strip may be in the form of two straps, one end of each strap being attached to a respective end of the strip of material 1. The straps extend around the door and are either tightly tied together or connected by a buckle or catch to hold the length of material 1 in place.
In a further embodiment of the invention as shown in Figure 2, two lengths of draught inhibiting material 1 are provided, one for each side of the door. These lengths are joined together at their ends by short strips of an elastic material 3', the strips extending around the vertical edges of the door.
WHAT I CLAIM IS: 1. A door provided with a draught restrictor for restricting or preventing the flow of air under the door, the restrictor comprising a length of draught inhibiting material arranged at one side of the door adjacent an edge thereof which, in use of the door, is lowermost, and an elastic or otherwise lengthwise adjustable flexible retaining strip attached to the length of material at its ends and so extending around the door as to releasably retain the length of material in place.
2. A door as claimed in claim 1, wherein the retaining strip comprises two flexible straps which are each attached to a respective end of the length of material and which are releasably connected together.
3. A door provided with a draught restrictor for restricting or preventing the flow of air under the door, the restrictor comprising two lengths of draught inhibiting material arranged one at each side of the door adjacent an edge thereof which, in use of the door, is lowermost, and two elastic or otherwise lengthwise adjustable flexible retaining strips interconnecting the lengths of material at their ends and so extending around edges of the door adjoining the first-mentioned edge as to releasably retain the lengths of material in place.
4. A door as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the draught inhibiting material is sheepskin.
5. A door as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the or each length of material is mounted on a rigid backing element.
6. A door provided with a draught restrict or substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to Fig. 1 or Fig. 2 of the accompanying drawings.

Claims (6)

**WARNING** start of CLMS field may overlap end of DESC **. WHAT I CLAIM IS:
