Description
(54) MOTOR CARS, PRINCIPALLY FOR INVALIDS (7it) We, GKN SANKEY LIMITED, a
British Company of, Albert Street Works,
Bilston, West Midlands, do hereby declare the invetion, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following state ment:- This invention relates to motor cars principally for use by invalids.
More particularly, the invention is conoerned with a motor car of the kind, hereinafter referred to as being of the kind specified, having an entrance closable by a door and wherein a movable ramp is associated with the entrance, the ramp Ibeing movable between an operative position in which it extends between ground level and the internal floor of the automobile and a stowed postion in which it does not interfere with the running of the automobile.
The provision of a ramp in a motor car of the kind specified enables an invalid to enter the motor car in a wheel chair which can be wheeled up the ramp when the latter is in its operative postion. In some cases the wheelchair can be wheeled sup the ramp by the invalid himself.
It is an object of the present invention to provide power driven means for moving a wheelchair into and out of a motor car of the kind specified.
Aocording to the invention we provide a motor car of the kind specified including a powerdriven reversible conveyor which is carried by, and extends along, the ramp and the internal floor d the motor car, the conveyor being arranged to be releasably engaged by an invalid's wheelchair whereby the chair can be moved into and out of the motor car by the conveyor, and means for releasably securing the chair in a predetermined position on the floor of the vehicle, the conveyor being arranged to move the wheel chair into said predetermined position.
To enter the motor car with the ramp in its operative position, an invalid can wheel his chair to the bottom of the ramp, engage the chair with the conveyor and then cause the conveyor to operate to move the chair into the vehicle to a driving or passenger position as required where the chair will engage said releasable securing means. This latter means are preferably of the construction described in the Complete Specification of our Application No. 37954/75. (Serial
No 1567751)
The conveyor will preferably be so constructed that the part of the conveyor on the ramp can be articulated relative to the part on the floor of the motor car as the ramp is moved between its operative and stowed positions.
There will preferably be a remote control for the conveyor on the end of a flexible lead so that the invalid in the wheelchair can hold the control in his hand while being moved by the conveyor. Limit switch means will preferably be provided to stop operation of the conveyor when the wheelchair reaches the releasable securing means.
Preferably the conveyor is a chain conveyor and this makes for ease ob articulation between the part on the ramp and the part on the floor of the vehicle as the ramp is moved between its operative and stowed positions.
The conveyor may be driven by a geared electric motor mounted adjacent the front of the motor car.
The invention also includes the combina- tion of a motor car as described above with an invalid's chair, the latter having means to releasably engage the conveyor. Where the conveyor is in the form of a chain, the wheelchair may have a probe which may be lowered to engage between the links of the chain and lifted to be clear of the links.
The invention will now be described in detail by way of example with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings in which: Figure 1 is a diagrammatic cross section through a motor car embodying the invention showing the ramp in its stowed position,
Figure 2 is a diagrammatic perspective view of the motor car uf Figure 1 showing the ramp in its operative position; and
Figure 3 is a diagrammatic section through the conveyor and a wheelchair showing how the latter can be engaged with the conveyor.
Referring now to the drawings, the motor car is indicated generally at 10 and has front wheels 11 and rear wheels 12. A steering wheel is provided at 13. The car has a rear entrance and this is provided with a door 14 which is hinged about a vertical axis at 15 and a ramp 16 which is hinged about a horizontal axis at 17 and is movable between a stowed position, shownin Figure 1, in which it does not interfere with the running of the car, and an operative position, shown in
Figure 2, in which it extends between the internal floor 18 of the car and the ground.
When the ramp 16 is in its stowed position as shown in Figure 1 and the door 14 is closed the rear of the car is sealed.
A chain conveyor, indicated generally at 19, extends under the central part of the floor 18 of the vehicle and also has a portion 20 carried by the ramp 16. Because of the nature of the chain conveyor the part 20 which is carried by the ramp 116 is easily articulated relative to the part 21 carried under the floor of the vehicle. The conveyor is arranged to be driven ;by a reversible, geared electric motor 22 adjacent the front of the car and this is controlled by a remote control 23 on a fly lead 24.
Referring to Figure 3, an invalid's chair is indicated generally at 25 and its front and rear wheels at 26a and 26b. The wheel chair is provided with a probe 27 which, as shown in Figure 3, is adapted to be engaged between two links of the chain conveyor 19 when the wheels engage the floor 118 which is slotted to give passage to the probe (or the ramp 16) the probe 27 being controlled through a remote control 28 which is connected to the probe 27 by a flexible cable or lead 29 so as to be within reach of the occupant of the chair.
Releasable securing means 30 as described in said Complete Specification are mounted on the floor 18 and are located so that the wheel chair is moved into engagement with the releasable securing means by the conveyor. A limit switch, not shown is provided to stop operation of the conveyor when the wheel chair has engaged the releasable securing means 30.
In operation, in order to enter the motor car, the invalid will bring his chair to the bottom of the ramp when the latter is in its operative position as shown in Figure 2. He will then wheel the chair onto the ibottom of the ramp so that the conveyor portion 20 lies centrally between the wheels of the chair. The chair occupant will then engage the probe 27 between the links of the part 20 of the conveyor chain 19 and then operate the control 23 which will operate the conveyor and move the chair into the vehicle.
When the invalid reaches the desired position he will operate the control 23 to stop the conveyor or the latter will be stopped by the limit switch when the wheel chair is engaged in the securing means 30. Once the wheel chair is in the car the ramp 16 can be moved to its stowed position as shown in Figure 1 and the door 14 closed. Remote controls may be provided for these operations.
The invalid chair can be moved out of the car by operating the conveyor 19 in reverse while the probe 27 is engaged with the conveyor. When the chair reaches the bottom of the ramp 16 the probe 27 will be disengaged from the conveyor chain.
Various modifications can be made to the motor car as specifically described, viz: (a) the motor car may have a side door as described in the specification of our Patent
Application No. 43454/7d, (Serial No 1546930) (b) the securing means 30, instead of being on a floor 118 under which the conveyor is located, may be on a bridge structure over the conveyor, at least the upper run of which may be above a floor shown at 18a in Figure 1. In such an arrangement the conveyor is arranged over a central portion of the floor 18a so that the wheels of an invalid chair being moved by the conveyor are arranged on either side of the conveyor and engage the floor 18a. If the motor car chassis has a central spine, the part of the conveyor within the vehicle can be mounted in the spine.
It will be seen that the invention provides a motor car of the kind specified having improved means for moving a wheel chair into and out of the car.
