Tinning, galvanizing, and coating by dipping. -The shell and end closure members of sheetmetal barrels &c. are separately immersed in cleaning and metal coating baths and then joined together. Threaded or finished portions are protected from the bath by screw caps or plugs which are removed whilst still hot. A closure member for the shell a comprises an inset head b adapted to form a double-locked joint with the flange a<3>. A plastic sealing material b<1> is used interiorly of the seam. The bung-hole is covered by a screw cap d and the vent opening by a screw-plug. As an example for galvanizing with zinc, the shells are cleaned in successive baths of sulphuric and muriatic acids and then immersed in molten zinc for one minute. A malleable ring c having an overlapping flange c<11> may protect the joint and is preferably electroplated with copper. Otherwise the joint may be coated with aluminium bronze, and the completed annular joints may be immersed in the coating bath.
