Abstract

Solutions of alkyl and aralkyl ethers of cellulose, starch, dextrin, &c. are used as protective colloids in the preparation of colloidal solutions, and of suspensions and emulsions, for example, of alkaloids, camphor, oils, phenol, disinfectants, medicaments; colloidal metals, metal oxides, etc.; gum, dextrin, albumen, etc.; the products obtained are according to their compositions suitable for use as medicines for internal administration or for injection, salves, cosmetics, disinfectants, ointments, &c., and as catalysts. The colloid may be formed in the solution of the cellulose ether &c., for instance, by reduction or electric atomizing, or it may be added in the dry state or in solution; and other protective colloids may be added. In examples, to an ammoniacal solution of a methyl or ethyl ether of cellulose or starch containing silver nitrate, a solution of ammonium formate is added, and the mixture is then heated and the colloid being separated either by dialysis or by precipitation with alcohol, &c.-the product may be used for medicinal purposes or as a catalyst; a solution of mercury chloride is added gradually to a water solution of an ethyl-cellulose or starch which has been kneaded with solid pyrogallol, alcohol is then added until a precipitate just forms, and afterwards caustic soda solution, whereupon a brownish-black colloidal precipitate containing mercury is obtained-this product is suitable for medicinal use or for chemical reactions; to a water solution of an ethyl-cellulose or starch, containing caustic soda, is added a solution of mercuric chloride, and to the colloidal solution or emulsion so obtained alcohol is added, whereupon after drying a light brown precipitate containing mercury and suitable for medicinal purposes, is obtained; an emulsion is prepared by stirring, rubbing, or shaking an oil with a water solution of an ethyl, a methyl-cellulose or starch; alternatively, the water solution of the ether may be rubbed up with any powdered colour or with metallic mercury; a salve-like emulsion for medicinal or cosmetic purposes is obtained by rubbing an ethyl- or benzyl-cellulose or -starch dissolved in oil with a water solution of an ethyl-cellulose or -starch; phenol or cresol dissolved in oil are emulsified by the addition of a water solution of an ethyl- or methyl-cellulose or -starch-the product may be used as a disinfecting material or for medicinal purposes; b -naphthol, phenol or cresol are dissolved in a solution of an ethyl- or benzyl-cellulose or -starch in oil, and emulsified with the addition of a water solution of an ethyl- or methyl-cellulose or -starch-the product may be used as a disinfecting-material or for medicinal purposes. Specifications 6387/13 and 3370/14, [both in Class 121, Starch &c.], are referred to.
