Description
(54) IMPROVEMENTS IN CARTRIDGES FOR USE IN SECURING
ANCHORAGES IN HOLES
(71) We, BWZ BERG- UND INDUS
TRIETECHNIK GmbH, a German Company of Am Kruppwald 10, 4250 Bottrop,
Federal Republic of Germany, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed to be particularly described in and by the follow mg statement:
The invention relates to a cartridge for securing anchorages in holes, for example resin-bedded roof bolts in holes in mines, tunnels or the like and particularly cartridges which contain adhesives material, such as synthetic resin, if necessary with components such as hardeners and/or fillers in separate compartments.
Such cartridges are used in the setting of the so-called resin-bedded roof bolts. There the cartridge is first inserted into a borehole to the bottom of the borehole and then the bolt is likewise inserted into the borehole so that the cartridge is thereby destroyed, its contents released, and the components therein mixed and so distributed that an interior securing or binding of the bolt to the wall of the borehole takes place.
Whilst at the beginning of the development of processes for setting resin-bedded roof bolts one worked with cartridges comprising a container of glass, later, for reasons of costs amongst others, one turned to substituting containers of a flexible material, especially of a synthetic material. This showed however that a cartridge with a container of flexible material could only be inserted into a borehole with difficulty. In addition the risk existed that the container would be torn or cut by projections on the wall of the borehole.
Because of that one changed to providing cartridges with a support device which is arranged outside the shell over at least a part of its length. The support device may comprise a tubular lattice into which the cartridge is already introduced in the course of production.
In practice however difficulties appeared in the insertion of the cartridge in the support device, since the filled and, accordingly, soft cartridge is extremely unwieldy and therefore allows insertion into the support device to be managed only with the greatest trouble. This difficulty also arises if the empty shell of the cartridge is to be inserted into the support device before filling. Besides, the manufacturer must hold in stock a number of differently sized support devices for the different kinds of cartridge used, the diameters of which can lie between 20 and 30mm and their lengths between 200 and 750mm.
Moreover it is known in the fixing of anchor bolts, to fill two half shells of perforated sheet metal with a mortar prepared immediately before the fixing process, to join the two filled half-shells together into a tube and to insert this in the borehole and thereafter insert the anchor bolt stem, which thereby presses out the mortar through the perforations and against the wall of the borehole, so that a suitable bond results between the anchor bolt and the wall of the borehole. This is certainly expensive since the mortar necessary for the fixing of the anchor bolt must be prepared only immediately before the fixing process.
It is an object of the invention to simply the manufacture of, and operation with, cartridges having a support device and destined for the fixing of anchorages such as resin-bedded roof bolts.
According to the present invention there is provided a cartridge, for use in securing anchorages in holes in mines, tunnels or the like, comprising an elongate pliable, rupturable container for adhesives material for securing the anchorage in the hole and one or more support members each attached to the container to extend over at least a part of its length, and covering a part only of the circumferential periphery of the container, at least parts of the remaining container periphery between circumferentially spaced edges of the or each support member being uncovered.
In preferred embodiments of the invention or each support member consists of a lattice of synthetic material extending at least over a substantial part of the length of the container, receiving the container and constructed in the form of a half-shell, and is connected with the container by a fastening device or devices surrounding the container and the support member.
The filled and therefore soft cartridge can be readily inserted into the support member, as the support member is in the form of a partial shell. Then the fastening device, which preferably is an adhesive tape which is wound around the container and the support member e.g. a lattice of synthetic material partially surrounding it, is applied.
Since the support member e.g. a half-shell of a lattice of synthetic material, may be relatively flexible and elastic, this elasticity can be used also to reduce its storage capacity, then such a support member in connection with the fastening device can be adapted within a certain range to various cartridge diameters without further trouble.
In addition the introduction of such a cartridge into an existing borehole is also more simple. Since the support member is present on only one side of the cartridge, the cross-section surface of such a cartridge is smaller than that of a cartridge which is completely encircled by a support device.
For that reason a cartridge according to the invention can be more readily inserted in a borehole merely on geometric grounds.
Thereby the support effect of the or each support-member is sufficient to prevent the cartridge from carrying out undesired and uncontrolled movements in the borehole.
On the other hand it is advantageous that the cartridge has increased flexibility and pliability on the side opposite to the or each support member, since it is accordingly possible the more easily to guide the cartridges past the projections of the borehole wall. In such a case the soft cartridge is largely protected, on the one hand through the or each support member and on the other hand through the fastening device, namely the adhesive tape.
A preferred embodiment of the invention has support members, e.g. sections of the lattice of synthetic material, arranged alternatively on opposite sides of the cartridge, and, if required or desired, neighbouring sections may partially overlap.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a support member for a cartridge according to the invention,
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the article of
Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a schematic view of a cartridge for securing anchor bolts in bolt holes and
Figures 4, 5 show modifications of the article according to Figure 3.
The support member half-shell 1 shown in
Figures 1 and 2 consists of a lattice of synthetic material with longitudinal rods 2 and connecting rods 3 running in the circumferential direction.
Figure 3 shows the construction of a cartridge for the setting of resin-bedded roof bolts. The cartridge consists of a container 4, known in itself, of pliable material, which contains the synthetic resin, with the hardener, if required, in a separate compartment as well as the filler, if required, and which is closed at one end with a welded seam 5 as well as at the other end for example with a clip 6 or at both ends with a clip.
The container is inserted in a support member in the form of a half-shell 1, which extends over the greater part of the length of the cartridge and whose circumferential curvature corresponds substantially to the circumferential curvature of the cartridge.
The half-shell 1 and container are then wound round with one or more adhesive tapes 7.
In the embodiment according to Figures 4 and 5 two or three support members i.e.
sections of half-shell are arranged alternatingly on opposite sides of the cartridge. If desired neighbouring sections partially overlap as in Figure 4.
If after introduction of the cartridge in the bore hole the cartridge is destroyed by the introduction and rotation of the bolt stem, then the components contained in the cartridge pass unhindered through the openings of the lattice of synthetic material and the borehole is completely filled. The strength of the lattic of synthetic material is so small that it offers no resistance worth mentioning to the penetrating bolt stem but is readily deformed or destroyed by it.
