Description
(54) IMPROVEMENTS IN BAGS
(71) We, LEAROYD PACKAGING
LIMITED, a British Company of Heasandford Mill, Queen Victoria Road, Burnley
BB10 2EJ, formerly known as LEA ROYD
PAPER MILLS LIMITED of 54 Jermyn
Street London SW1Y 6LS do hereby declare the invention for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement::
This invention relates to bags formed of plastics material and of the kind having front and rear walls joined to define a bag mouth and a closure flap extending from one of said walls, beyond the mouth of the bag, either the inner surface of the closure flap or a part of the outer surface of the other of said walls, which is covered by said closure flap when the latter is folded over the bag mouth to provide a closure, being provided with a region of an adhesive substance for releasably retaining the closure flap in the position of closure.
According to the present invention there is provided a bag formed of plastics material comprising front and rear walls joined to define a bag mouth, a closure flap extending from one of said walls, beyond the bag mouth, a laterally elongate row of discrete patches of an adhesive substance provided on either the inner surface of the closure flap or a part of the outer surface of the other of said walls which is covered by said closure flap when the latter is folded over to provide a closure and a masking strip covering and being adhered to said patches, said patches of adhesive substance releasably retaining the closure flap in the closure position after removal of the masking strip and when the closure flap is folded over.
An embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing.
The simple bag in the embodiment is illustrated in the open condition. The bag is formed by folding a single rectangular sheet of transparent polypropylene along a line 1 forming the bag base and defining front and rear walls 2 and 3. The bag sides are defined by linear welds 4 and 5 leaving an open mouth 10. The rear wall 3 is deeper than the front wall 2 thereby defining a closure flap 6.
An adhesive region is defined laterally across the front surface of the bag front wall, the zone being made up of a row of diamond shaped adhesive patches, these being printed on by an etched roller. The adhesive, may for example, be a polyvinyl acetate based hotmelt adhesive which remains permanently tacky. A masking strip 8 covers and is stuck to the patches 7. The strip 8 is preferably made of polyethylene, which is thermally incompatible with polypropylene and has its surface which contacts the patches 7 faced with a "non-stick" lacquer.
In use to close the bag the masking strip 8 is peeled off, the flap 6 folded over the bag mouth 10 and stuck by means of the adhesive patches 7 to the front surface of the bag front wall.
The bag illustrated may be used by clothing manufacturers to package goods for despatch to retailers.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS:
1. A bag formed of plastics material and comprising front and rear walls joined to define a bag mouth, a closure flap extending from one of said walls, beyond the bag mouth, a laterally elongate row of discrete patches of an adhesive substance provided on either the inner surface of the closure flap or a part of the outer surface of the other of said walls which is covered by said closure flap when the latter is folded over to provide a closure and a masking strip covering and being adhered to said patches, said patches of adhesive substance releasably retaining the closure flap in the closure position after removal of the masking strip and when the closure flap is folded over.
2. A bag as claimed in Claim 1 wherein

Claims (5)
2. A bag as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the adhesive substance comprises a polyvinyl acetate based hot-melt adhesive.
3. A bag is claimed in Claim 1 or 2, wherein the bag is formed of polypropylene resin and the masking strip is formed of polyethylene resin.
4. A bag as claimed in any one of the preceding claims wherein the masking strip has the surface thereof which bears against the patches of adhesive substance coated to render it more readily removable therefrom.
5. A bag substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to, and as shown in, the accompanying drawings.
