Abstract

156,608. Jackson, J. L., (Assignee of Dearing, J. W.). July 31, 1916, [Convention date]. Actuating-mechanism ; indicators, applications of.-A valve is operated by a combination of worm gear and rack-and-pinion gear, and the operating handle is provided with an indicator and is adjustable radially for accessibility. The valve is mounted in a casing 1 between the pipe sockets 4, and is moved vertically by a toothed wheel 8 engaging with a rack on the valve stem. The wheel 8 is mounted on a shaft 9 journaled in a sleeve 10 which is off-set from the stem of the valve casing. The shaft 9 is tapered at 13 and is maintained in contact with its tapered seating by a hub 26 on a split nut 25, Fig. 5, which screws into the barrel 11. To secure the nut against accidental displacement it is provided with a tapered threaded bore 27 into which a similar bolt 28 may be screwed to expand the nut. A cover 29 is provided to render the parts accessible. The sleeve 10 is reduced in diameter at 14 and provided with an extension 16 which is secured by a pin and slot 15, 18. The sleeve 16 is slotted longitudinally at 19, Fig. 1, so that it may be rotated on the member 10 and secured in any position by a bolt 21. The outer end of the shaft 9 is provided with teeth 30 so that it may be rotated by a worm shaft 33 which carries a handle 36. The sleeve 16, 31, Fig. 1, carrying the worm shaft may be clamped in any position to render the handle 36 accessible. The valve may also be operated by applying pressure to the handle 36 to rotate it with the sleeve 16 about the axis of the shaft 9. The handle is formed with a recess covered by a plate 38 having a sight opening 39 to expose a revolution counter 44, Fig. 4, and also openings 40 through which the position of a fixed pointer 41 may be observed as the handle rotates. The latter openings are graduated to indicate the proportional opening of the valve. The counter 44 is moved one tooth for each revolution of the wheel. A hollow boss 48 contains a spring 49 and catch 47, which latter engages with equidistant sockets 46 on the lower side of the counter 44. Alternatively, the indicator may be graduated to show the rate of flow for a given fluid pressure.
