(54) AN IMPROVEMENT ON A DUTCH TYPE GARDEN HOE (71) I, GEORGE MOORE, 16, Cookridge Drive, Harfield, Doncaster, South Yorkshire, DN7 6JE, British Subject, do hereby declare the invention, for which I pray that a patent may be granted to me, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention relates to an improvement on a Dutch type garden hoe.

A Dutch type hoe is a garden implement to control the growth of weeds on cultivated areas. It consists of a horizontal cutting blade attached to the end of a long handle which can be pushed forward just below the surface of the soil thereby chopping off the tops of the weeds.

The improvement to which this invention refers is to attach a rake to the rear of the cutting blade which is hinged in such a manner to allow it to ride over the ground in the forward direction but held rigid when the hoe is pulled backwards this gives a further loosening action to the soil containing the weeds.

In order that this may be more fully understood reference to the accompanying drawing is made.

Fig. 1 shows the position of the rake in relation to the cutting edge of the hoe.

Fig. 2 shows the action of the rake when the hoe is operated in the forward direction.

Fig. 3 shows the action of the rake when the hoe is operated in the backward direction.

The rake may be built into the side supports of the hoe blade and form an integral part of the hoe head or it can be a separate part of the hoe only being attached by clips or bolts to the hoe.

WHAT I CLAIM IS: - 1. A Dutch type garden hoe with a rake set to the rear of the horizontal cutting blade, the rake being pivotable relative to the cutting blade and being so designed to gather up the weeds and debris on the backward stroke.

2. A garden hoe as claimed in Claim 1 in which the rake is built into the head of the hoe or is of separate manufacture and attached to the hoe.

3. A Dutch type garden hoe as defined in Claim 1 and substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
