Description
(54) A DRAINAGE HEAD
(71) I, EDWIN RONALD HARRISON, a citizen of the Republic of South Africa, of 51 Third Avenue, Illovo, Johannesburg, Republic of South Africa, do hereby declare the invention, for which I pray that a patent may be granted to me, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention relates to an outlet head of the type used to conduit liquid from a surface of a drain pipe. More particularly, the invention relates to an outlet head suitable for use in open, exposed areas such as parking lots or basements, or in swimming pools, reservoirs, dams and the like.
An outlet head of this type must be robust and easy to install and assemble, and particularly where the head is to be subjected to vehicular traffic, must be so constructed as to be able to bear the resulting heavy load without the various component parts of the outlet head flexing or moving relatively to one another.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an outlet head which substantially meets these requirements.
According to one aspect of the present invention, there is provided a drainage head which comprises a sump member in the form of a truncated conical or right cylindrical member adapted to connect with a drain pipe, a grating which has a peripheral surface complementary to and adapted to be seated on the sump member, and means suitable for threadedly engaging with an annular portion of the member or with the grating or both with an annular portion of the member and with the grating, which means, in use, fix the grating to the member.
Preferably, the truncated conical or right cylindrical member is adapted to threadedly engage with a drain pipe.
In a preferred embodiment, the grating is domed and substantially circular in plan.
In another preferred embodiment, the grating is substantially planar and substantially circular in plan.
Advantageously, the fixing means comprise two or more studs threadedly engaged with the member.
For a better understanding of the present invention, and to show how the same may be put into effect, reference will now be made, by way of example, to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of part of a planar grating for use in an outlet head of the invention,
Figure 2 is a sectional side elevation of an outlet according to the invention incorporating the grid of Figure 1, and
Figure 3 is a sectional side elevation of a second embodiment of an outlet head according to the invention incorporating a domed grating.
Referring to the drawings, an outlet head 10 consists of a sump 12 which has the shape of an inverted, truncated cone, and either a circular, planar grid 14, as illustrated in Figures 1 and 2, or a circular domed grating 16, shown in Figure 3.
Two studs 18 and 20 are fixed, diametrically opposed to each other, in the sump and project upwardly to pass through holes 22 formed near the periphery of the grating.
The grating in each example is formed with an annular conical surface which allows the grating to seat securely on the sump. The gratings are held in place by means of nuts 24 screwed onto the studs 18 and 20. The nuts when screwed down fit into recesses 26 so as to be flush with the upper surface of the grating.
The sump 12 is internally threaded at its lower end 28 to screw onto a drain or down pipe. In use the sump is connected to a drain pipe and thereafter concrete or other filler material is placed around the sump and topped off to a level flush with the upper surface of the sump. The grating is then fitted to the sump and secured in position. The domed gratings are used in those areas where traffic is not encountered while the planar or flat gratings are used where it is expected that traffic will pass over the outlet heads.
The sumps illustrated in Figures 2 and 3 have their outlets or lower ends 28 projecting downwardly and each is connected in use to drain pipes which lie on the central axis of the outlet head. For different applications the outlets may be angled at say 30 or 45" to the horizontal, or at any other suitable angle. Nor is it necessary that the sump and the grids be formed only with conical surfaces. The grid could be formed so that its periphery has a right-cylindrical shape in which case the sump would be formed with a flat annular surface to mate with the grid. In these and the embodiments described above and illustrated in the accompanying drawings the outlet head offers the ability to withstand heavy loads without the various components flexing or moving relatively to one another, and of being easy to install and assemble.
Where the outlet head is to be used to drain an area waterproofed by means of a suitable sheet material, the edges 40 of the material around the outlet head may be clamped between the upper rim of the sump 12 and the annular conical surface of the grid 14 or grating 16, as the case may be (see Figure 2). The invention thus dispenses with the separate clamping ring which is used in other outlet heads. To render a good seal between the material and the outlet head the number of studs may be increased to three or more symmetrically arranged around the sump. The strength and stability of the assembled outlet head is thereby enhanced.
WHAT I CLAIM IS:
1. A drainage head which comprises a sump member in the form of a truncated conical or right cylindrical member adapted to connect with a drain pipe, a grating which has a peripheral surface complementary to and adapted to be seated on the sump member, and means suitable for threadedly engaging with an annular portion of the member or with the grating or both with an annular portion of the member and with the grating, which means, in use, fix the grating to the member.
2. A drainage head according to Caim 1 wherein the truncated conical or right cylindrical member is adapted to threadedly engage with a drain pipe.
3. A drainage head according to Claim 1 or 2, wherein the grating is domed and substantially circular in plan.
4. A drainage head according to Claim 1 or 2, wherein the grating is substantially planar and is substantially circular in plan.
5. A drainage head according to Claim 1, 2 or 3, wherein the fixing means comprise two or more studs threadedly engaged with the member.
6. A drainage head, substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to, and- as shown in, Figures 1 and 2 of the accompanying drawing.
7. A drainage head, substantially as herein described with reference to, and as shown in, Figure 3 of the accompanying drawing.
