Description

(54) ARTICLE SUCH AS A WALL PLAQUE, PUZZLE OR PLACE MAT (71) I, GEOFFREY BROWN, a British subject of 3 Ridge Court, Ridge Road, Rotherham, do hereby declare the invention for which I pray that a Patent may be granted to me and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:- This invention relates to an article that may be used for decorative purpases - such as a wall plaque; amusement purposes such as a puzzle; or utilitarian purposes such as a place mat.
According to the present invention there is provided an article comprising a generally planar base member having a recess formed in one surface thereof, the recess being both enclosed and defined by an endless wall extending normally with respect to the plane of the base member, the latter conatining a plurality of planar metallic pieces arranged together in a ccMnmon plane and together defining a regular geometrical shape corresponding to that of the recess, and a removable cover which is both rigid and transparent being provided to retain the jigsaw within the recess.
In detail, the jigsaw pieces may be of solid brass, stainless steel, silver, gold, platinum etc., or a base metal coated with a precious metal e.g. silver plated brass. The base member may be of synthetic plastics material e.g.
Perspex (Registered Trade Mark) or a range of woods.
In an embodiment of the article for use as a wall plaque or puzzle for instance, the cover may be of glass, Perspex (Registered Trade Mark) etc., while in embodiment for use as a place mat for instance, the cover is preferably of either a heat resistant material e.g. Pyrex (Registered Trade Mark) glass; or a material that has both heat resistant and scratch resistant properties; or a material that is primarily scratch resistant.
The regular geometrical shape of the recess may be circular e.g. of 10" diameter, with the jigsaw having of course a corresponding ex teal shape, while the base member may be rectangular in the case of a wall plaque or puzzle or circular in the case of a place mat Alternatively, the recess may be another regular geometrical shape e.g. oval, rectangular, triangular, octagonal.
In a first embodiment of base member, the wall defining the recess may be stepped to provide a first, lower recess to accommodate the pieces of the jigsaw, and a second, larger, upper recess, to accommodate the cover, the larter being either a push fit or secured by a plurality of clips.
In a second embodiment of base member, the cover is arranged to match precisely the dimensions of the base member and in effect seats on an upper surface of a rim of the base member which extends around the pieces of the jigsaw, with clips to secure the cover.
With either embodiment, the clips may comprise "L"-shaped members, one limb of which is pivotally attached to the base member and the other limb of which is arcuately movable between a position in which it lies over the cover, to dip the latter to the base member, and a position in which it lies dear of the cover, so that the cover may be removed and the user have access to the jigsaw pieces.
The invention will now be described in greater detail by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a plan view of a first embodi- ment of article in accordance with the invention: Figure 2 is a section on the line II of Figure 1 but to a larger scale; Figure 3 corresponds to Figure 2 but shows a second embodiment; and Figure 4 is a plan view of a portion of Figure 3.
In the drawings, the article 1 can be seen to comprise a rectangular base member 2 concaining a plurality of planar metallic pieces arranged together in a common plane to form a jigsaw 3, the pieces together defining a circular shape to fit a circular recess 4 provided in the base member 2.
As apparent from Figure 2, the base mem ber 2 is planar and has a lower surface 5 and an upper surface 6. The recess 4 is defined by an endless wall 7 having a first portion 7A defining the recess 4 to accommodate the pieces of the jigsaw 3 and a second wall 7B to define a second recess, of greater diameter than the first recess, to accommodate a cover 8. It will be observed that the length of the wall 7A and the thickness of the pieces of the jigsaw 3 are identical, and likewise the depth of the wall 7B and the thickness of the cover 8, so that an upper surface 9 of the latter lies flush with an upper surface 10 of a rim portion 11 of the base member 2.
In the embodiment of Figure 3, only a single wall 7 is provided and again the depth of this wall and the thickness of the pieces of the jigsaw 3 are made to correspond, so that the cover 8 matches precisely the dimensions of the base member 2 and by being rectangular seating on the upper surface 10 of the rim 11.
Also indicated in Figures 3 and 4, is an "L"-shaped clip 12 e.g. of metallic material, one limb 13 of which is pivotally secured m a member 14 attached to the base member 2, 90 that, as best seen in Figure 4, the other limb 15 may be pivoted betsveen a position shown in full line in which it lies over the cover 8 to clip the latter to the base, and a position shown in dotted line in which it lies clear of the cover so that the latter may be removed to give access to the pieces of the jigsaw.
Obviously, the article may be prod, eced in any desired size for use as a wall plaque, while for use as a place mat, two or more standard sizes will be required to suffice respectively for dinner plates and glasses.
