Description
(54) A PRINTING STRIP FOR FACILITATING THE PRINTING OF FORMS
AND A METHOD FOR PRINTING THE SAME
(71) We, BARTSCH VERLAG KG, of 8-10 Alte-Land-Strasse, D-8012 Munich
Ottobhrunn, Germany (Fed. Rep.); a German company, do hereby declare the invention
for which we pray that a patent may be
granted to us, and the method by which it is
to be performed, to be particularly described
in and by the following statement:: This invention relates to a printing strip
comprising a set of forms consisting of a plurality of booklet-like superimposed indi
vidual sheets with copying properties and
at least one binding margin which holds
the individual sheets together through a perforated connection, said set of forms being
secured by its binding margin to a con
tinuous carrier web or strip to pefmit the
mechanical printing thereof, as well as a
method for mechanically printing and bind
ing said set of forms.
Such a set of forms which is known from
German Offenlegungschrift 2430 964 is held
together on its one narrow and one broad
side by a binding margin respectively to
which the individual sheets of the set of
forms are secured through a perforated con
nection. The individual sets of forms are
cemented with the binding margin extending
across the broad side of the form set to a
continuous web which is provided on its
longitudinal sides with a perforation respec
tively so that it can be automatically trans
ported through a mechanical printer as
used, for example, as the output device of a
computer. The known set of forms is also
used advantageously as a booklet of airplane tickets, the individual airplane tickets of each booklet, which have copying properties, ,being printed simultaneously by a mech -anical printer with the required information such as the name of the passenger, the places and times of departure and arrival and other data. The mechanical printer is controlled by a computer supplying the corresponding .fnformation. Underneath the set of forms secured to the continuous web, there is another sheets which is secured to the continuous web and which has such a length that it overlaps the leading edge of the next respective set of forms during transport of the continuous web through the printer, thereby supposedly preventing disruptions of transport due to the relatively high leading edge of the set of forms. After the set of forms has been printed, it is removed from the continuous web by tearing the perforated connection with the binding margin extending across the broad side and is provided with an envelope having a cover and backing sheet subsequently or even prior to its separation from the continuous web so that the individual sheets of the set of forms is -now bound to form a type of booklet as is known from the conventional airplane ticket booklets.
According to the present invention there is provided a printing strip for facilitating the printing of forms comprising a continuous carrier web or strip carrying -a plurality of sets of forms with each set comprising a plurality of superimposed individual sheets with copying properties and at least one binding margin for holding the individual sheets together through an elongate perforated connection to form a booklet, said booklet having a long side and a narrow side and being secured by its binding margin to said strip and adapted to be mechanically filled-in, a cover sheet member and a rear backing sheet member for each said booklet being provided by said endless strip per se and each said cover sheet member upon separation from the main body of the continuous strip being foldable to a position on top of the uppermost one of said individual sheets so that after the set of forms has been filled-in, said cover sheet member can be folded over onto the top of the uppermost one of said individual sheet.
In this first embodiment the continuous web required to transport the set of forms through a mechanical printer is also used as an envelope for the set of forms by folding one portion of the continuous web about one edge of the set of forms so that the non folded portion of the continuous web forms the rear backing sheet and the portion folded about the sited edge forms the cover sheet of the envelope.
In accordance with a first embodiment, one portion of the continuous web located between adjacent sets of forms can be folded about a broad side of the set of forms so that this portion of the continuous web adjacent the respective set of forms constitutes the envelope cover sheet, while the portion of the continuous web located directly beneath the set of forms constitutes the rear backing cover.
Also according to the present invention there is provided a printing strip for facilitating the printing of forms comprising a continuous carrier web or strip carrying a plurality of sets of forms with each set comprising a plurality of superimposed individual sheets with copying properties and at least one binding margin for holding the individual sheets together through an elongate perforated connection to form a booklet said booklet having a long side and a narrow side and being secured by its binding margin to said strip adapted to be mechanically filled-in, a cover sheet member and a rear backing sheet member for each said booklet being provided by said endless strip and one additional individual sheet immediately adjacent said endless strip and each said cover sheet member upon separation from the main body of the continuous strip being foldable to a position on top of the uppermost one of said individual sheets so that after the set of forms has been filled-in, said cover sheet member can be folded over on to the top of the uppermost one of said individual sheets.
In accordance with an embodiment of the second mentioned printing strip the continuous web has a multi-layered design, i.e.
the continuous web consists of a plurality of superimposed sheets so that, after the longitudinal edge of the continuous web preferably provided with a perforation has been separated the respective lower sheets of the continuous web are then folded about a narrow side of the set of forms opposite the separated longitudinal side and form the cover sheet and other sheets printed, for example, with additional information such as the conditions when using airplane tickets, depending upon the number of layers in the continuous web.
Even in the case of the first mentioned embodiment. in which an adiacent portion of the continuous web can be folded towardR the front around the broad side of the set of forms, the continuous web can of course have a multi-layered design so that even here other sheets printed with conditions for example. are included and bound in the envelope cover for the set of forms.
Still further according to the present invention, there is provided a printing strip for facilitating the printing of forms comprising a continuous carrier web or strip carrying a plurality of sets of forms with each set comprising a plurality of superimposed individual sheets with copying properties and at least one binding margin for holding the individual sheets together through an elongate perforated connection to form a booklet, said booklet having a long side and a narrow side and being secured by its binding margin to said strip adapted to be mechanically filled-in, a cover sheet member and a rear backing sheet member for each said booklet being provided by two of said individual sheets of said booklet; and each said cover sheet member upon separation from the main body of the continuous strip being foldable to a position on top of the uppermost one of said individual sheets so that, after the set of forms has been filledin, said cover sheet member can be folded over on to the top of the uppermost one of said individual sheets.
In accordance with an embodiment of the
third mentioned arrangement, two other sheets are provided beneath the last individual sheet of the set of forms to be printed which are thicker than the individual sheets and which form the rear backing sheet and the front cover of an envelope for the set of forms. After the individual sheets have been printed and the set of forms separated from the continuous web, the undermost one of the other sheets which forms the front cover is folded upwardly onto the uppermost individual sheet so that the set of forms is thus enclosed in the envelope cover. Thus, although the set of forms still to be printed is already provided with the rear backing and front cover sheets which form the envelope cover, the individual sheets are printed by a mechanical printer directly or through a transfer sheet without having to do this through the cover sheet of the envelope. Printing the individual sheets through the cover sheet is practically impossible, since the cover sheet is damaged by the types of the printer or the copied impression on the individual sheets to be printed is illegible.
According to the present invention there
is provided a method for mechanically
printing and binding a booklet in a cover comprising a cover sheet member and a rear binding sheet member, said booklet consisting of a plurality of individual sheets having copying properties and interconnected by means of a common binding margin, a plurality of booklets being secured to one side of a continuous strip between transverse perforations and transported through a mechanical printer, comprising the improvement wherein after printing said con tinuous strip is severed about one of said transverse perforations and wherein one portion of at least one of the continuous strips and said booklet is folded about the narrow side of the booklet in order to form a booklet cover sheet member, said cover sheet member being positioned directly beneath said booklet prior to said folding.
Finally, according to the present invention there is provided a method for mechanically printing a booklet comprising a plurality of individual sheets having copying properties and interconnected by means of a common binding margin, a plurality of booklets being secured to one side of a continuous strip, transported through a mechanical printer and being separated from said continuous strip after printing, comprising the improvement wherein a rear backing sheet member and a cover sheet member forming a booklet cover for the booklet are provided directly under the individual sheets in the booklet and wherein, after the individual sheets have been printed, the cover sheet member is folded onto the top of the uppermost individual sheet.
The invention will now be described further, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. 1 is a section of a continuous web supporting sets of forms to be printed;
Fig. 2 is an already printed set of formes comprising the associated parts of the continuous web;
Fig. 3 is a section of the endless belt supporting the sets of forms to be printed in another embodiment; and Flg. 4 is a schematic view of a set of forms removed from the web in Fig. 3.
Figure 1 shows a portion of a continuous web I which is provided in a manner known per se with perforation holes 2 on its longitudinal edges, by means of which the web is transported through a mechanical printer, for example. Sets of forms 3 and 31 are secured to the web 1. Only two sets of forms are visible in the section illustrated here. Each set of forms 3 has a binding margin 4 on its narrow left side which holds
the individual sheets of the set of forms together. Another binding margin 5 is also provided on the narrow right side of the sets of forms 3, by means of which the individual sheets are held together and with which the set of forms, as is also the case
with the left binding margin 4, is secured
So the web by cementing, for example.
Parallel to the right longitudinal edge of the endless belt 1 there is provided a separating perforation 6 which extends through both the web and the sets of forms 3. In
the embodiment illustrated in Fig. 1, a specific area 7 of the web 1 remains empty between two adjacent sets of form 3 and 31 respectively which is defined by perforations or a fold which extends transversely to the direction of transport of the web 1.
After the sets of forms have been printed in a mechanical printer, through which the continuous web 1 has been passed, the lower set of forms 3, for example, together with the empty area 7 of the web 1 adjacent to it is removed from the rest of the web 1 by tearing the perforation 6 as well as the other perforations 8 and 9. The adjacent portion 7 of the web is thereafter folded about the fold line 10 on to the top of the set of forms 3, thereby forming an envelope cover for the set of forms 3 which is formed by the underlayer of the set of forms as the rear backing sheet and by the free portion 7 of the web as the cover sheet. The left perforation 9 on the side can, alternatively, be formed as a paper fold instead of perforation.
Fig. 2 shows another embodiment of the set of forms. The set of forms 3 in this case is only connected with the immediately adjacent portions of the web 1, while the rest of the web is not illustrated. The part of the web and of the set of forms 3 shown in Fig. 2 can be obtained, for example, by separating the set of forms 3 together with the associated parts of the web 1 along the fold 10 shown in Fig. 1. Parts corresponding to parts shown in Fig. 1 are also designated by the same reference numerals in
Fig. 2.
In the embodiment shown in Fig. 2, a multi-layered web 1 is used which consists in this case of a total of three superimposed sheets or web 11, 12 and 13. After printing the set of forms 3 and separating the part of the web shown in Fig. 2 together with the set of forms from the rest of the web, the lower sheets 12 and 13 of the web are folded about the left side perforation 9 in a forward direction in the manner indicated by the arrow, thereby producing an envelope for the set of forms 3 which is formed from the uppermost sheet 11 as the rear backing sheet and the middle sheet 12 of the lower sheets as the cover sheet, while the lowermost sheet 13 of the web 1 forms an additional page in the booklet on which optional information can be printed such as, for example, the usual conditions for the use of airplane tickets. Before and after the lower sheets 12 and 13 of the web 1 are folded forward, the right edge portion of both the web as well as of the right marginal part of the set of forms is separated along the continuous perforation 6 so that in this manner a conventional airplane ticket cover consisting of a cover and a backing sheet as well as an arbitrary number of additional pages for additional information formed by other sheets of the web.
The web 1 in the embodiment shown in
Fig. 1 can of course have a multi-layered design as well so that additional pages are formed within the envelope cover also when the free portion of the web is folded towards the front.
Another embodiment is shown in Fig. 3 in which the sets of forms 311 are located on the continuous web 1 such that the letters of a common column are respectively printed simultaneously in all lines of the individual sheets to be printed by the printer. A cylinder printing machine is employed in this case for example. The essential difference in this embodiment of the set of forms 311 is that the rear backing sheet 111 and the cover sheet 131 forming the envelope are already provided in the set of forms itself beneath the last individual sheet to be printed of the individual sheets 14, as is shown in more detail in Fig. 4. The rear backing sheet 111 and the cover sheet 131 are preferably thicker than the individual sheets to be printed as is shown schematically in Fig. 4.
Between the bottommost individual sheets 14 to be printed and the rear backing sheet 11'. other additional sheets 15 are provided which serve as information sheets bearing the conditions of an airplane ticket booklet for example. Two such additional sheets 15, which serve as information sheets, are also provided under the cover sheet 131 as well.
As Fig. 3 shows. the set of forms 311 is also provided with two binding margins 4 and 5 on its narrow sides. The binding margin 5 holds the individual sheets 14, the additiollal sheets 15 the rear backing sheet 11' and the cover sheet 131 together in the arrangement illustrated in Fig. 4.
After the individual sheets have been printed, the set of forms 311 is again separated from the continuous web 1. The binding margin 5 is thereafter separated from the set of forms 311 and the cover sheet 131 as well as the additional sheets 15 under it are folded forward about the binding margin 4 on to the uppermost sheet of the individual sheets 14. The set of forms is thus enclosed in the envelope cover.
This embodiment of the set of forms 311 can of course also be secured to a continuous web 1 as is shown in Fig. 1. The set of forms is then printed in the mechanical printer line for line in the conventional manner.
The set of forms 311 can be printed either directlv or bv means of a transfer sheet.
Although the new set of forms as well as the method for printing and binding same were explained here using an airplane ticket booklet as an example. neither the method nor the set of forms itself is restricted to such a use. but rather arbitrary transportation, carriage or shipping papers so-called customer service checks for arbitrary kinds of servicing work or other concessions and privileges, admission papers or authorization certificates of all types can be combined to form such sets of forms.
