Description
(54) MACHINERY GUARD
(71) I, FRANCIS MOUNTFORD, a
British Subject of 14, Grove Park, Burbage,
Hinckley, Leicestershire LE10 2BJ, do hereby declare the invention for which I pray that a patent may be granted to me and the method by which it is to be performed to be particularly described in and by the following statement: The object of this invention is to provide a simple and effective machinery guard for machines or machine stands of the kind in which the machine employs a rotary tool driving spindle which is also axially movable such as in the case of a drilling or similar machine. Practical advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following disclosure.
According to this invention a machinery guard is characterised by an openable sleeve mountable from a fixed part such as a column of the machine or machine stand and a further sleeve mountable from a movable part or head carrying the machine spindle whereby said sleeves are able to have relative telescopic movement on axial movement of the machine spindle.
In practice and as applied to a vertical bench type drilling machine, the construction and arrangement of the guard is as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which:
FIGURE 1 is a front perspective view of the guard shown fitted to a drilling machine, and
FIGURE 2 is a similar view to FIGURE 1 but showing a modified form of the guard.
Like parts are designated by the same or similar reference numerals throughout the drawings.
The machine consists of a table 1 provided with a cylindrical column 11 at its rear, the column 11 carrying at its upper end a head 10 operated for vertical movement on the column 11, a lower part only of the head 10 being visible in the drawing and receiving socketed therein the usual forward boss 21 of the housing 20 of an electric hand drill 2 so that the chuck 22 of the drill spindle extends downwardly. The head 10 can be operated for vertical movement on the column 11 by a lever (not shown) in the usual manner against the action of a return compression spring 12 abutting a fixed collar 13 on the column 11.
One part of the guard according to this invention consists of an openable sleeve 4 fixedly mounted from the column 11 by an arm 42 and collar 43, the collar 43 fitting about the column 11 and is locked in any required vertical position by a thumb screw 45 threaded through the wall of the collar 43 so as to bear against the column 11.
The lower sleeve 4 is shown consisting of two parts 40, 41 of substantially semi-circular form in plan hinged together a one of their adjacent vertical edges at 44 so that the sleeve 4 can be opened and closed, the sleeve 4 being secured in the closed condition by a magnetic catch 46 on one part 40 abutting a lug 47 on the other part 41 which latter is mounted by the arm 42 from the column 11.
Both sleeve parts 40, 41 are preferably of suitable transparent plastics material, and the part 40 is shown provided with a vertically adjustable extension sleeve 48 of nearly circular form in plan view apart from a rear gap 480 for clearing a drill bit 3 when the sleeve 4 is opened. The sleeve 48 has a vertical slot at 481 which engages a clamping screw and wing nut 49 on the sleeve part 40.
The other or upper sleeve or sleeve assembly 5 of the guard is carried by an L-shaped bracket 50 bolted at 51 to the lower part of the machine head 10 so that the sleeve is positioned mainly about the chuck 22 of the drill 2 for axial movement therewith. The vertical limb 52 of the bracket 50 is shown slotted at 54 for vertical setting of its mounting on the head 10 whilst the horizontal limb 53 is notched at 55 for access of the usual key to the rear part of the chuck 22.
The upper sleeve 5 is of smaller diameter than the lower sleeve 4 so that it can move axially within the latter on down feed of the machine head 10.
The upper sleeve 5 is adjustable lengthwise and is shown of two part construction for this purpose consisting of an upper sleeve part 56 carried by the bracket 50 and a lower sleeve part 57 about the first part 56 and supported from it for axial adjustment.
For this purpose the lower sleeve part 57 is shown provided with a vertical slot 58 having two horizontal slots 59 communicating with it, the slots 58, 59 being arranged to engage a radial pin 560 extending from the inner upper sleeve part 56. By appropriate slight turning movement of the lower sleeve part 57 the pin and slot co-operation is such that either the upper or lower horizontal slot 59 can be engaged with the pin 560 for obtaining an upper or mid setting of the lower sleeve part 57, the pin 560 abutting the upper end of the vertical slot 58 for lowermost setting of the sleeve part 57. This enables the length of the upper sleeve 5 to be set according to the extent of feed movement of the machine head 10 in maintaining substantially complete enclosure of the chuck 22 and drill bit 3 by the sleeves 4, 5.
When it is required to change the drill bit 3 the lower sleeve 4 can be quickly opened and access gained at 55 to the chuck 22 for release and tightening operation of the latter.
In the modified form of the guard shown in FIGURE 2 the lower sleeve 4 is mounted from the column 11 and is openable and provided with an extension sleeve 48 in a closely similar manner to the sleeve 4 of FIGURE 1 and is designated by the same reference numerals. However instead of a magnetic catch a clamp screw 460 is shown and which in the closed condition of the sleeve 4 cooperates with a forked lug 470. The sleeve 4 and extension sleeve 48 are preferably of transparent plastics materiaL As before the upper sleeve 5 is mounted by a bracket 50 from the lower part of the machine head 10 so that the sleeve is positioned mainly about the drill chuck 22 for axial movement therewith and within the lower sleeve 4 in a telescopic manner.
In this instance the upper sleeve 5 is shown consisting of two parts 60, 61 of substantially semi circular form in cross section hinged together at adjacent vertical edges at 64 so that the sleeve 5 can be opened and closed for access to the chuck 22. The sleeve 5 is secured in the closed condition by a catch shown consisting of a lug 66 secured to one part 60 and having a frictional contact with the other part 61. However any suitable catch may be employed such as a magnetic or clamp screw catch.
In a further development shown in
FIGURE 2 each semi-circular part 60, 61 of the sleeve 5 is provided with an extension piece 600, 610 respectively of complementary semi-circular form and vertically adjustable for front and/or rearward extension of the sleeve 5 as required. For this purpose each extension piece 600, 610 has a clamping screw and slot connection with its associated
sleeve part 60, 61. Thus each extension piece 600, 610 is shown provided with a verical slot 680 engaged by a clamp screw and nut 690 carried by the corresponding sleeve part 60, 61.
Further slotting 68 in the sleeve parts 60, 61 enables alternative adjustable mounting of the extension pieces 600, 610 to be obtained according to requirements including upward extension of the pieces 600, 610.
As will be appreciated from the foregoing the guard is of simple and durable construc tion for effective use and can be readily fitted to a drilling or like machine.
