Description
(54) LINEAR RECIRCULATING BALL BEARING
(71) We, SKF INDUSTRIAL TRADING
AND DEVELOPMENT COMPANY, B.V., a Com, pany organised and existing under the laws of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, of P.O.
BOX 50 Nieuwegein, The Netherlands, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:- This invention concerns a linear recirculating ball bearing.
This invention provides a linear recircula
ting ball bearing comprising a sleeve and a cage which together provide a plurality of endless paths, each path accommodating a plurality of galls for recirculation between a first longitudinally extending portion of the path in which, in use of the bearing, the balls are subject to radial loads, and a second longitudinally extending portion of the path in which, in use of the bearing, the balls are not subject to radial loads, the sleeve having a plurality of longitudinally extending surfaces one for the first portion of each path and on which the balls bear when subject to radial loads in use of the bearing. each said longitudinally extending surface being shor- ter than the corresponding said first portion of each path, the sleeve also having a plurality of longitudinally extending recesses in its bore, one for the second portion of each path, each recess in a section plane perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the bearing having two side walls extending radially outwardly and converging to an apex, one side wall being longer than the other.
The longer side wall of the recess for each path may extend from the apex to the first portion of the path, and the longer side wall or a plane tangential to it may form an included angle of less than 90" with a plane in which lies the longitudinal axis of the bearing and which passes through the centres of the balls in the first portion of each path.
The said longitudinal extending surfaces may be provided one by each of a plurality of radially inwardly projecting and longitudinally extending parts of the sleeve and the step at each end of the said longitudinally extending surface of each path may be rounded.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, of which: Figure 1 is a cross-section of a linear recirculating ball bearing;
Figure 2 is a plan of part of the bore of the sleeve of the bearing; and
Figure 3 is a longitudinal section of part of the sleeve.
The linear recirculating ball bearing shown has a sleeve 1 and an annular plastics cage 5 disposed within the bore 2 of the sleeve and around a shaft 11. The sleeve I and cage 5 together provide a plurality of endless paths 6, each path accommodating a plurality of balls 10 for recirculation between a first longitudinally extending portion 7 in which, in use of the bearing, the balls are subject to radial loads, and à second longitudinally extending portion 8 in which the balls are not subject to radial loads. The paths 6 are completed by semi-circular reversal portions 9 one at each end of each path and interconnecting the first and second portions 7 and 8 of each path.
The sleeve 1 has a plurality of longitudinally extending recesses 4 in its bore 2, one for the second portion 8 of each path. Each recess 4, in a section plane perpendicular to the axis of the bearing, has two side walls 12 and 13 extending radially outwardly and converging to an apex. Side wall 12 is longer than side wall 13 and extends from the apex to the first portion 7 of the path 6. Side wall 12, or if it is curved, a plane tangential to it, forms an incIuded angle of less than 90" with a plane A-A in which lies the longitudinal axis of the bearing and which passes through the centres of the balls 10 in the first portion 7 of the path 6.
The sleeve 1 provides a plurality of longitudinally extending surfaces 3 one for the first portion 7 of each path 6 and on which the balls 10 bear when subject to radial loads in use of the bearing. Each longitudinally extending surface 3 is shorter than the corresponding first portion 7 of each path 6 so that withe balls 10 are axially aligned in the first portion 7 of each path 6 before or after being subject to radial loads and bearing on the said longitudinally extending surface 3 of each path 6.
Referring to Figures 2 and 3, and in use of the bearing, balls 10, having travelled along second portion 8 of the endless path, leave that portion and travel around reversal portion 9. For each ball path there is a smooth continuation along and from recess 4 and around reversal portion 9 on longer side wall 12 up to point 15. From point 15, the balls 10 travel longitudinally along first portion 7 of the endless path.
Each longitudinally extending surface 3 is provided by a radially inwardly projecting and longitudinally extending part of the sleeve 1. There is a rounded step 14 at each end of surface 3 between the level at point 15 and the level of surface 3 in the bore 2 of the sleeve 1. The balls 10 only travel along surface 3, where they are subject to radial loads in use of the bearing, after having travelled longitudinal distance "a" along first portion 7.
Instead of plastics the cage 5 may be of sheet metal.
Also a cage can be used which has an external surface adapted to the profile of the bore 2 of the sleeve 1.

A linear recirculating lball bearing comprising a sleeve and a cage which together provide a plurality of endless paths, each path accommodating a plurality of balls for recirculation .between a first longitudinally extending portion of the path in which, in use of the bearing, the balls are subject to radial loads, and a second longitudinally extending portion of the path in which, in use of the bearing, the balls are not subject to radial loads, the sleeve having a plurality of longitudinally extending surfaces one for the first portion of each path and on which the balls bear when subject to radial loads in use of the bearing, each said longitudinally extending surface being shorter than the corresponding said first portion of each path, the sleeve also having a plurality of longitudinally extending recesses in its bore, one for the second portion of each path, each recess in a section plane perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the bearing having two side walls extending radially outwardly and converging to an apex, one side wall being longer than the other.
2. A bearing as claimed in claim 1, wherein the longer side wall of the recess for each path extends from the apex to the first portion of the path, and the longer side wall or a plane tangential to it forms an included angle of less than 90" with a plane in which lies the longitudinal axis of the bearing and which passes through the centres of the balls in the first portion of each path.
3. A bearing as claimed in claim 1 or 2, wherein the said longitudinally extending surfaces are provided one by each of a plurality of radially inwardly projecting and longitudinally extending parts of the sleeve, the step at each end of the said longitudinally extending surface of each path being rounded 4. A linear recirculating ball bearing sub santially as herein described with reference to and as shown in the accompanying drawings.
