Description

(54) AIR VENT FOR HEATING OR VENTILATING SYSTEM (71) We, CREATORS LIMITED, a British Company of Plansel Works, Albert Drive, Sheerwater, Woking, Surrey do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed to be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention relates to directional air vents for heating or ventilating systems e.g.
for cars, ships and aircraft.
According to the present invention there is provided a variable direction air vent for a heating or ventilation system comprising:- a longitudinally extending first housing; a second housing mounted within said first housing for rotation about the longitudinal axis thereof; a flap valve provided with a control for manual operation and pivotally mounted on said second housing about a second axis and operable between a closed position and an open position, thereby to control the rate of air flowing through the vent; and a nozzle pivotally mounted on said second housing about a third axis perpendicular to said longitudinal axis.
The manual control for the flap valve may comprise a planar member which engages the flap valve and is rotatable coaxially therewith, the planar member having at or near the front of the nozzle an edge which when part-rotated causes movement of the flap valve.
The invention is illustrated merely by way of example in the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a part sectional plan of the air vent in assembled form, Figure 2 is a part sectional plan of the air vent in part-assembled form, and Figure 3 is an exploded perspective view of the air vent of Figure 2.
Referring to the drawings, a directional air vent for a heating or ventilating system com prises an outer housing 10 having a cylindrical internal surface, an inner housing 11 is rotatable within an outer housing 10 and is retained therein by snap-fitting latch members 12 equispaced circumferentially at 1200 around and projecting from the upstream end of inner housing 11. The inner housing 11 is provided with a flap valve 13 with bearing bosses 14 which are journalled in bearing recesses 15 in the inner housing 11. The flap valve 13 is provided with a planar segmental member 16 extending at right angles to the axis of the flap valve 13. The member 16 is provided with a series of peripheral teeth 17.
The flap 13 is actuated by a disc-shaped actuator 18 which is provided with a series of peripheral teeth 19 which engage with the peripheral teeth 17 on the member 16. The actuator 18 is mounted on parallel supports 20 which extend across the downstream end of the inner housing 11. The actuator 18 is provided with bearing pins 21 which are journalled in bearing passages 22 in the support 20. The bearing pins 21 on the actuator 18 also serve as bearing journals for a partspherical nozzle 23, the pins locating in holes 24 in ribs 25 which extend across the outlet end of the nozzle 23. The actuator 18 extends between the ribs 25 and is ridged to facilitate operation with the fingers. The actuator 18 is also provided with an arcuate slot 26 which terminates at one end in the toothed rim of the actuator. The slot 26 is adapted to bias the peripheral teeth 19 into engagement with the peripheral teeth 17 on the member 16.
The flap valve 13 can be held at any position between the open and closed position.
All parts of the air vent may be made from moulded plastics material. Since the nozzle only moves about one axis relative to the inner housing 11, it is rendered multidirectional due to the fact that it is able to rotate together with its associated actuator, flap valve and inner housing within the outer housing.

Claims (6)

WHAT WE CLAIM IS:
1. A variable direction air vent for a heating or ventilation system comprising:- a longitudinally extending first housing; a second housing mounted within said first housing for rotation about the longitudinal axis thereof; a flap valve provided with a control for manual operation and pivotally mounted on said second housing about a second axis and operable between a closed position and an open position, thereby to control the rate of air flowing through the vent; and a nozzle pivotally mounted on said second housing about a third axis perpendicular to said longitudinal axis.
2. An air vent as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the manual control for the flap valve comprises a planar member which engages the flap valve to rotate it, the planar member having near the outlet end of the nozzle an edge for manual engagement.
3. An air vent as claimed in Claim 2 wherein the planar member is a disc having a portion of its rim which projects beyond the outlet end of the nozzle.
4. An air vent as claimed in Claim 2 or 3 wherein the planar member is provided with a series of peripheral teeth for engagement with a second series of peripheral teeth on an edge of a second planar member mounted on the flap valve and extending at right angles to said second axis.
5. An air vent as claimed in Claim 4 wherein the planar member is slotted to provide a peripheral spring strip with the peripheral teeth mounted on the outer edge thereof, which strip is biassed outwards into engagement with the peripheral teeth on the edge of the second planar member.
6. An air vent substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as shown in the accompanying drawings.
