Description
(54) NON-RETURNABLE PALLET
(71) I, DAVID ALEXANDER CARR, a
British Subject of Blaircourt Farm, Old
Barn Lane, Rettendon, Essex, do hereby declare the invention, for which I pray that a patent may be granted to me, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention relates to a non returnable pallet and members for use in constructing such a pallet.
According to the invention, in one aspect thereof, there is provided a non returnable pallet, comprising a set of parallel base members of hollow rectangular cross-section and a set of support members of hollow rectangular cross-section disposed in parallel at right angles to the base members, each support member being interlocked with each base member at the intersection of the support member with the base member, in which pallet: each support member and each base member is constructed from two structural elements each in the form of a channel section; and each support member is interlocked with each base member by a first interlocking means comprising a pair of lugs projecting from the support member and engaging in the base member to form a pair of transverse partitions in the base member, and a second interlocking means comprising a pair of lugs projecting from the base members and engaging in the support member to form a pair of transverse partitions in the support member.
The support member and the base member may each have one of the two structural elements forming the member fitted within the other element, each lug of the interlocking means of the member being formed by a tongue on the inner structural element and an overlying tongue on the outer structural element, the inner structural element being provided with a slot in which the interlocking means of the other member is engaged.
In another aspect, the present invention provides, a member for use as a base or support member of a non-returnable pallet according to claim 1, the member having a hollow rectangular cross-section and means for interlocking with another similar member disposed at right angles thereto, which member is constructed from two structural elements each in the form of a channel section, the interlocking means comprising a pair of lugs projecting from the member for engagement in the other similar member to form a pair of transverse partitions in the other member.
Preferably, one of the two structural elements forming the member is fitted within the other element, each lug of the interlocking means of the member being formed by a tongue on the inner structural element and an overlying tongue on the outer structural element, the inner structural element being provided with a slot in which the interlocking means of the other similar member is engageable.
A non-returnable pallet according to the invention may be made from base and support members made from any suitable sheet material, such as fibreboard or plastics sheet material, particularly corrugated fibreboard or corrugated plastics material.
In order that the invention may be readily understood, an embodiment thereof will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view from above of a non-returnable pallet embodying the invention and comprising two support members interlocked with three base members;
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the pallet from below;
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the pallet from above, with an outer structural element of one of the support members removed;
Figures 4A and 4B are respectively perspective views of the outer and inner structural elements constituting a base member the structural elements being shown in an inverted condition;
Figure 5 is a perspective view of part of the pallet from below, showing one of the base members removed;;
Figures 6A and 6B respectively show two blanks from which the outer and inner structural elements of a base member are formed; and
Figures 7A and 7B respectively show two blanks from which the two structural elements of a support member are formed.
Referring to Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings, a non-returnable pallet embodying the invention comprises a set of three parallel base members 1 of hollow rectangular crosssection and a set of two support members 2 of hollow rectangular cross-section mounted on the base members 1. The support members 1 are disposed in parallel at right angles to the base members 1, each support member being interlocked with each base member at the intersection of the support member with the base member. The base and support members are constructed from fibreboard or corrugated plastics sheeting.
The lower surfaces 3 of the base members 1 constitute the standing surface of the pallet, and the upper surfaces 4 of the support members constitute the loading surface of the pallet. The three base members 1 are spaced apart to define therebetween two entries 5 for the fork of a fork-lift truck by which the pallet may be lifted and transported.
As shown in Figures 3 and 5, interlocking means are provided at each intersection of a support member with a base member.
Such interlocking means comprises first interlocking means in the form of a first pair of double-thickniess lugs 6 provided on a support member 2 and engaging in a slot of a base member 1 to form a pair of transverse partitions in the base member. The interlocking means further comprises a second pair of double-thickness lugs 7 on the base member 1 engaging in a slot of the support member to form a pair of transverse partitions in the support member.
Referring to Figures 4A and 4B, each base member 1 is constructed from two structural elements 8 and 9 in the form of co-operating channel sections shown in inverted condition in Figures 4A and 4B.
Structural element 8 fits within structural element 9 and comprises a roof 10 provided with slots 11 for receiving the lugs of the support member 2, side walls 12 extending from one surface of the roof 10, and two pairs of proiecting tongues 16A extending from the other surface of the roof 10 in line with the side walls 12. Structural element 9 comprises a floor 14, side walls 15 extending from one surface of the floor, and two pairs of projecting-tongues 16B extending from the edges of the side walls remote from the floor 14. When assembled to form a base member 1, the structural element 8 fits within the element 9 so that the roof of the element 8 and the floor of the element 9 respectively from the top and bottom surfaces of the member 1 and the side walls 15 and tongues 16 overlie the side walls 12 and tongues 13.In this way, a tongue 16A and the overlying tongue 16B together constitute a lug 7 of the second interlocking means.
Similarly, each support member is constructed from two structural elements 17 and 18 whose form is apparent from Figures 3 and 5 which only differ from the elements 8 and 9 in length and in the number of slots
and lugs provided. The member 17 is formed with three pairs of tongues 19A and the member 18 is formed with three pairs of tongues 19B. When the elements 17 and 18 are assembled, the tongues 19A and the respective overlying tongues 19B together form the double-thickness lugs 6 adopted to extend into the slots 11 in the base members 1 to form transverse partitions in the base member at the intersections of the support and base members.
The above described non-returnable pallet is an easily assembled structure in which the members interlock without requiring further securing and which is capable of supporting substantial loads. The structure also give access for a fork-lift truck whilst providing an adequate standing surface.
The tongues constituting the interlocking means form a four-sided cell having a double-thickness wall at each intersection of a support member and a base member, the cell effectively extending through the full depth of the pallet and providing stacking strength as well as holding the members together. Overall rigidity is achieved as a result of the exact fitting of the interlocking lugs in the slots provided in the members, whereby the spacing and parallelism of the side walls of the members is assured.
It is envisaged that the members forming the base and support members may be provided in three standard sizes which may be combined in various ways to provide pallets for various applications.
One possible system provides for three standard sizes of member, namely of 650 mm, 1000 mm and 1200 mm length respectively. - The 650 mm member has two pairs of interlocking lugs and is used in conjunction with either of the other two sizes to form a single entry pallet, i.e. one in which fork-lift entries are defined only between the 650 mm members which constitute the base members.
The 1000 mm and the 1200 mm members both have three pairs of interlocking lugs and are used individually or together to form a two way entry pallet, i.e. a pallet in which entries are defined- both between the braze members and between the support members.
With this system of standardised mem bers, it is possible to form 4 different sizes of pallets as follows:
1200 mm x 1000 mm (6modules used - two way entry)
1200 mm x 650 mm (5 , ,, - one way entry)
1000 mm x 1000 mm (6 ,, ,, - two way entry)
1000 mm x 650 mm (5 ,, ,, - one way entry)
Figures 6A, 6B and 7A, 78 illustrate blanks of fibreboard or corrugated sheet material from which the structural elements of the base members 1 and support members 2 of Figures 1 to 5 may be constructed.
As shown in Figures 6B and 7B, a blank 20 for use in constructing an inner structural element of the members is of substantially rectangular form and has parallel score lines 21 defining a floor-forming strip 22 interconnecting two side-wall-forming strips 23, the floor-forming strip having slits 24 parallel to the score lines and slits 25 perpendicular to the score lines to define pairs of partially severed tongue-forming areas 26 in the floor-forming strip.
As shown in Figures 6A and 7A, a blank 30 for use in constructing an outer structural element of the members has a substantially rectangular portion 31 provided with parallel score lines 32 defining a roofforming strip 33 interconnecting two sidewall-forming strips 34, the edges 35, 36 of the strips 34 parallel to the score lines 32 having tongue-forming flaps 37.
The slits 25 of a blank 20 may be parallelsided slits. However, to improve the interlocking of the members in an assembled pallet, each slit 25 is preferably of the form shown in Figures 6B and 7B, where each slit 25 (Figure 6B) has end portions 25A, 25B which each taper from a central portion 25C of the slit towards the respective score line. Moreover, each tongue-forming flap 37 preferably has two slits 37A, 37B (Figure 6A) each extending parallel to the score lines 32 and formed at a respective end of the flap at the junction of the flap with the respective wall-forming strip 34.
