Abstract

For sealing off a pressure vessel (7), use is made of a cast closure element (3) which can be inserted into the container aperture. In order to guarantee little deformation under loading and security against malfunctions despite low production costs, the closure element (3) has, on its outer circumference (1), encircling groove-like recesses into which are inserted elements (4) which are used for the prestressing of the closure element (3). The closure element (3) is furthermore clamped against the pressure vessel (7) via retention devices (6) by means of a clamping spider (5), with the interposition of a sealing flange (8). <IMAGE>

Description

(54) CLOSURE FOR A PRESSURE VESSEL (71) We, L. & C. STBINMULLBR GmbH, a German Company, of 527 Gummersbach 1, Germany, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention relates to a closure for an opening in a vessel adapted to operate at high internal pressure and possibly high internal temperature, the closure being of the kind comprising a closing member of cast construction adapted to be inserted in the opening in the vessel, a holding device, and means for securing the holding device on the vessel and engaged against the closing member so as to brace the latter against internal pressure in the vessel.
Such closures for pressure vessels are known, for example, from German patent specification Offenlegungsschrift 1,600,391.
They have the disadvantage, however, that they are not prestressed and therefore do not compensate for the deformation forces which act on the closing member when the pressure vessel is in operation.
According to the present invention there is provided a closure for a pressure vessel of the kind referred to above, wherein the closing member is prestressed by elements extending around the outer periphery of the closing member.
In the closure of the invention, the deformation forces acting on the closing member when the pressure vessel is in operation are compensated by the forces arising as a result of the prestressing, so that the closing member can fulfill the function incumbent thereon.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which: Figure 1 is a sectional view of a closure for a pressure vessel, with a shaft extending through the closing member of cast construction, and Figure 2 is a plan view of the closure of Figure 1, shown partly in section.
Referring to the drawing, the opening in the pressure vessel 7 is closed by a closing member 3 of cast construction which has, at its outer periphery 1, encircling groove-like recesses 2 in which prestressing elements 4 are inserted. The closing member 3 is braced against the pressure vessel by a spider 5 which is secured to the pressure vessel by members 6. A sealing flange 8 is interposed between the closing member and the pressure vessel.
The closure according to the invention can be of light weight and hence easy to mount and dismount, and it has little deformation behaviour under load, security against disturbance and of low production cost.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS: 1. A closure for an opening in a vessel adapted to operate at high internal pressure and possibly high internal temperature, the closure comprising a closing member of cast construction adapted to be inserted in the opening in the vessel, a holding device, and means for securing the holding device on the vessel and engaged against the closing member so as to brace the latter against internal pressure in the vessel, characterised in that the closing member is prestressed by elements extending around the outer periphery of the closing member.
2. A closure for an opening in a vessel, substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
