Description
(54) CONVEYOR ROLLERS
(71) We, FLETCHER SUTCLIFFE WILD
LIMITED, a British Company of Universal
Works, Horbury, Wakefield, do hereby declare the invention for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:- This invention relates to an idler roller, for use with a belt conveyor.
Such rollers conventionally comprise an outer tubular shell which makes contact with the belt, a pair of end plates welded to the shell and centrally and co-axially apertured for the passage of a spindle, ends of which spindle project beyond the end plates to be secured to the conveyor structure and a pair of bearings, usually ball bearings, one located adjacent each end plate and rotatably connecting the shell to the spindle. Also a sealing means is usually provided between a bearing and its adjacent end plate to prevent the ingress of dirt, water, etc. to the bearing.
According to the present invention, a conveyor roller comprises an outer tubular shell, and two co-axially apertured end plates each having an inturned, axially extending resilient flange, the outer diameter of the flange approximating to the inner diameter of the shell so that the flange is located inside the shell, and means to displace the flange radially outwardly, so as to secure the respective end plate to the shell.
Thus the construction in accordance with the invention avoids the need for a welding operation to connect the end plates to the shell.
In detail, the means to displace the flange may comprise a displacement ring carried by a plurality of axially extending bolts and adapted to abut the flange, rotation of the bolts forcing the displacement ring into tighter engagement with the flange thereby increasing the gripping action of the latter on the shell. The inturned flange may be provided with a plurality of spaced axial slits so as to have resilient fingers between the slits to make contact with the displacement ring.
The displacement ring may have a plurality of apertures corresponding to the number of bolts, with a headed nut located in each aperture, the head of the nut being remote from the head of the bolt. The displacement ring may comprise a cup member with in dined side walls. A bearing cup may also be provided to contain a roller bearing and if required a seal, e.g. of the labyrinth type.
The bearing cup may be located horizontally, with the cup bottom having an aperture corresponding to the spindle diameter, and may terminate, remote from the cup bottom, in a flange extending radially outwardly, by which flange the cup may be secured to the adjacent end plate. Such securing may be by welding and or the cup flange may be provided with a plurality of holes, located around a circumference corresponding to that of the bolts, so that the cup may be located on the bolt shanks.
The invention will now be described in greater detail, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a part sectional view through one end of an idler roller in accordance with the invention; and
Figure 2 is a similar sectional view but showing further details of the end plate.
In the drawings, the conveyor roller is indicated generally at 1 and comprises an outer tubular shell 2 having an external periphery 3 adapted in use to make contact with a belt (not shown) of a belt conveyor, and an internal periphery 4, one end 5 only of the roller 1 being shown in Figures 1 and 2, for the other end is of course identical.
Each end 5 is provided with an end plate 6 with a circular aperture 7 for the passage therethrough of a spindle 8 of slightly smaller diameter than aperture 7, the spindle 8 serving, in use, to support the roller 1 on the conveyor structure (not shown) by being secured thereto. The end plate 6 is provided with an inturned, axially extending flange 9 provided with a plurality of spaced axial slits 10 between each of which are defined a plurality of resilient fingers 11, the outer diameter of the flange 9 corresponding to the inner diameter of the shell 2 so that the flange just fits inside the end 5 of the shell 2 and engages the inner periphery 4 thereof. A cup shaped displacement ring 12 has an inclined wall 13 adapted to bear on the fingers 11 the ring 12 being supported on- a plurality of bolts 14 extending from the end plate 6, with nuts 15 located on the ring 12, so that rotation of the bolt heads 16 draws the ring 12 towards the end plate 6, thereby increasing the force with which the side wall 13 bears on the flange 9 which in turn increases the gripping action of the flange 9 on the periphery 4 of the shell 2. Also mounted on bolts 14 is a bearing cup 17 having a cup bottom 18 provided with a circular aperture 19 for the passage therethrough of the spindle 8, the cup 17 terminating remote from the bottom 18, in a radially outwardly directed flange 20, through which bolts 14 pass.
Within the cup 17 is mounted a bearing indicated generally at 21 and between the bearing and the plate 6 is mounted a seal assembly indicated generally at 22.
