Description

(54) FACING SHEET (71) We HPW HERZBERGER PLATEN WERKE GmbH & Co., KG, a Kommanditgesellschaft organised and existing under the laws of the Federal Republic of Germany, of 3420 Herzberg/Harz, Federal Republic of Germany, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be part icularly described in any by the following statement: This invention relates to a facing or covering or jacketing sheet for covering or masking light sources, more especially for lamp shades, which is provided with patterns and/or pictures made from material which is impervious to light and/or is poorly pervious to light.
In the case of known facing sheets of this type, which are used more especially for lamp shades, the sheet consists of oilpaper, transparent leather or imitation leather or the like, the patterns being produced by printing by means of a colour paint or dye application.
It is disadvantageous that it is difficult to produce patterns which are precise and which have sharp contours and that such foils are not sufficiently resistant to wear and to ageing.
Accordingly, an object of the present invention is to provide a facing sheet with which satisfactorily translucent sharpcontoured images or illustrations can be produced and which is resistant to ageing and to wear to a high degree.
The invention provides a facing sheet for covering light sources, more especially for lamp shades, and comprising a laminate of a plurality of layers of bleached sulphide cellulose paper, impregnated with phenolic resins the laminate having been coated on one side with a metal foil which has been etched.
away at locations where the sheet is desired to be translucent to produce a pattern or picture.
The invention also provides a method of producing a facing sheet as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein a laminate comprising a plurality of layers of bleached sulphide cellulose paper impregnated with phenolic resin, are coated with a metal foil, the metal foil is partly coated with a resist to define a picture or pattern, and subsequently the unprotected areas of the foil are etched away.
It is particularly advantageous if from two to five layers of paper consisting of bleached sulphide cellulose are used, since in this way a fine optical coordination with regard to the light sources to be used can be achieved.
The outer surface of the sheet can, after the etching-away, for the protection of the copper or aluminium parts, but also for the protection of the foil locations lying therebetween, be provided with a coat of lacquer or varnish. In order to make possible a satisfactory translucency, without getting interference patterns (or centres of disturbance or faults or discontinuities), and in order moreover to bring the foils to the exact accuracy to size, it is advantageous if the foil rear sides which, in use, face a light source are provided with a finishing or finish-grinding or final rub or finish. To fill-up possible remaining unevennesses, it is moreover advantageous if also the foil rear side is provided with a coat of varnish after the grinding or polishing.
The invention will be described further, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein: Figure 1 shows, in perspective representation, a table lamp, a lamp shade of which is provided with a preferred facing sheet of the invention; Figure 2 shows, on an enlarged scale, the preferred facing sheet of the invention, in section.
In accordance with Figure 1, a lamp shade 1 is provided with pictures which consist of a - copper or aluminium foil, in which respect this metal foil forms the contours of the pictures.
The metal foil is applied to a laminate made from a plurality of layers of bleached sulphide cellulose, which is saturated with phenolic resins and is etched away at the locations 3 which are to be pervious to light. As emerges from Figure 1, flat pieces of the facing sheet can be joined at their corners into a lamp shade and have, for example, a quadratic or square plan.
Figure 2 shows the facing sheet, in accordance with the invention, in section. In the embodiment in accordance with Figure 2, three layers 4 of bleached sulphide cellulose, which is impregnated with phenol resins, are provided, from 2 to 5 layers is desirable. The metal foil 7 is applied to the side 6 remote from the light source S.The metal foil is etched away at those points 8 which are desired to be pervious to light or translucent.
The outer surface 6 of the sheet is provided, after the etching-away, for the protection of the copper or aluminium parts, but also for the protectionof the translucent locations 8, with a coat 9 of varnish. The foil rear side 10 facing the light source is, to avoid interference patterns or faults and to achieve an exact accuracy to size, provided with a fine-grinding or finishing, in which respect also the rear side of the foil, as shown, can be covered with a coat 11 of varnish.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS: 1. A facing sheet for covering light sources, more especially for lamp shades, and comprising a laminate of a plurality of layers of bleached sulphide cellulose paper impregnated with phenolic resins, the laminate having been coated on one side with a metal foil which has been etched-away at locations where the sheet is desired to be translucent to produce a pattern or picture.
2. A facing sheet as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the metal foil is a copper or aluminium foil.
3. A facing sheet as claimed in Claim 1 or 2, wherein in that the paper laminate consists of from two to five layers of bleached sulphide cellulose paper.
4. A facing sheet as claimed in any preceding Claim, wherein the outer surface of the foil has been provided, after etching, with a coat of varnish.
5. A facing sheet as claimed in any preceding Claim, wherein the rear side of the sheet has been treated by fine grinding or finishing or fine polishing.
6. A facing sheet as claimed in Claim 5, wherein the rear side of the sheet is provided with a coat of varnish.
7. A method of producing a facing sheet as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein a laminate comprising a plurality of layers of bleached sulphide cellulose paper impregnated with phenolic resin, are coated with a metal foil, the metal foil is partly coated with a resist to define a picture or pattern, and subsequently the unprotected areas of the foil are etched away.
8. A method as claimed in claim 7 wherein the resist is a bituminous varnish.
9. A method as claimed in claim 7 or 8 wherein after etching the remaining resist is removed.
10. A method as claimed in claim 7, 8 or 9 wherein the side of the sheet having the metal foil is finally provided with a protective coating.
11. A method as claimed in any of claims 7 to 10, wherein the surface of the laminate remote from the foil is subjected to a finefinishing operation.
12. A method as claimed in claim 11, wherein the surface of the laminate remote from the foil is provided with a protective coating.
13. A method of producing a facing sheet substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
14. A facing sheet substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
