Description
(54) IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO
EXCAVATING EQUIPMENT
(71) We, JOHN ANTHONY DODDS, a British Subject of The Spinnery, Magpie
Lane, Coleshill, Buckinghamshire, and PE
TER WILSON DODDS, a British Subject, of Pynwen Farm, Dibben Hill, Chalfont St.
Giles, Buckinghamshire, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the follow mg statement:
The present invention has reference to improvements in or relating to excavating equipment.
According to the present invention there is provided, in excavation equipment including a piston-operated shovel pivotally mounted on a support arm, a breaker arm pivotally mounted on said support arm, said breaker arm having tooth means extending substantially perpendicularly from the plane of the body of the breaker arm, and piston and cylinder means operable to move said breaker arm and its projecting tooth means towards and away from said shovel, the piston and cylinder means being connectable to the breaker arm at a number of positions along the length of the breaker arm.
The present invention will now be more fully described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure I is a perspective view of an excavator,
Figure 2 is a side view of a support arm, shovel and breaker arm;
Figure 3 is a perspective view of a support arm, shovel and breaker arm.
In an excavator a first support arm 1 is pivotally mounted on the vehicle body and a second support arm 2 is pivotally connected to the first support arm 1. The first and second support arms are manoeuvrable by means of piston and cylinder assemblies 3 and 4 respectively, operated from the vehicle cabin. A shovel 5 having a leading edge 6 provided with tines 7 is pivotally mounted on the second support arm 2, and is pivotally movable under the control of a piston and cylinder assembly 8, also operated from the vehicle cabin.
A breaker arm 9 is provided, also pivotally mounted on the second support arm co-axially with the shovel 5 and is movable towards and away from the leading edge of the shovel under the control of a piston and cylinder assembly 10 operated from the vehicle cabin.
The breaker arm 9 is provided with tooth means 11 projecting towards the shovel 5, as seen in the drawings. The tooth means 11 may be integral with the breaker arm, as shown in Figures 1 and 3, or may be attachable to the breaker arm, as shown at 11' in Figure 2, at one of a number of positions along its length. The piston and cylinder assembly 10 is connectable to the breaker arm 9 at a number of positions along its length, as shown in Figure 3.
When the excavator is in use during demolition or excavation work, tearing up an airport runway for example, the shovel 5 is operated in the normal manner to scoop up concrete etc. from the runway. The breaker arm is then operated to move toward the shovel, the tooth means 11 contacting and smashing the concrete, which may otherwise be in unmanageable slabs, to facilitate the excavating operation.
When not required, during scooping up of earth, for example, the breaker arm can be withdrawn to an inoperative position, as shown in Figure 1.
During demolition of walls etc. the shovel 5 can be retracted to a rest position and the breaker arm 9 lowered to a position substantially perpendicular to the support arm 2, for example, to be used as a ram to demolish the wall, the scooping operation thereupon being effected either by the shovel 5 alone or by a combination of the shovel 5 and the breaker arm, as described above.
The breaker arm can also be advantageously employed in combination with the shovel during carrying operations. For example a tree trunk could be carried, tightly held between the shovel 5 and the breaker arm 9.
As can be seen from the above the provision of a breaker arm substantialy adds to the operating flexibility of an excavator.
WHAT WE CLAIM lS:- 1. In excavation equipment including a piston-operated shovel pivotally mounted on a support arm, a breaker arm pivotally mounted on said support arm, said breaker arm having tooth means extending substantially perpendicularly from the plane of the body of the breaker arm, and piston and cylinder means operable to move said breaker arm and its projecting tooth means towards and away from said shovel, the piston and cylinder means being connectable to the breaker arm at a number of positions along the length of the breaker arm.
2. Excavation equipment substantially as herein before described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
