Description

(54) DISPENSING APPARATUS (71) We, SYLON INTERNATIONAL Pry.
Lid., a company organized and existing under the laws of the State of Victoria, Australia, of 152-162 Mahoneys Road, Thomastown, Victoria, Australia, hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention relates to a dispensing apparatus and in particular to a dispensing apparatus for the mixing of a liquid into a liquid mainstream.
Many previous attempts have been made to dispense relatively small quantities of fluid together with a larger quantity of a fluid mainstream such as water. In these attempts energy of the mains water under pressure is used in the dispensing. For instance in the dispensing of garden sprays it is known to draw a concentrate solution from a reservoir by the use of a venturi whereby the concentrated solution is drawn into a mainstream of water for application to the plants. However, in such situations it is difficult to control the rate of emission of the concentrated solution and such a method is unsatisfactory for the dispensing of many fluids such as the dispensing of detergent.
An object of the present invention is to provide apparatus for the dispensing of liquids into a liquid mainstream.
The present invention provides dispensing apparatus for the controlled dispensing of a liquid into a liquid mainstream and including: a mainstream passageway for transmission of at least a portion of the liquid mainstream from an inlet to an outlet end; a dispensing reservoir at least partially surrounding said mainstream passageway between said inlet and outlet ends: an inlet passageway extending between an opening into said mainstream passageway and an opening into said reservoir; downstream of the opening of said inlet passageway into said mainstream passageway, an outlet passageway extending be tween an opening into said mainstream passageway and an opening into said reservoir; and control means adapted to close and open one or both of said inlet and outlet passageways; wherein during use when a liquid mainstream flows along said mainstream passageway and said control means is in an open position, a portion of said liquid mainstream is diverted along said inlet passageway into said reservoir and a portion of any liquid in said reservoir passes along said outlet passageway from said reservoir to said mainstream passageway.
The mainstream passageway of the dispensing apparatus of the invention may be provided by a tube or the like of any suitable dimensions. The tube may be made of any suitable material. A plastic such as polycarbonate has been found particularly suitable. The mainstream passageway may provide for transmission of the entire mainstream or, if preferred, for transmission of only part thereof. In a preferred embodiment of the invention the mainstream passageway is provided by a tube having a screw-threaded end portion at the inlet end.
Preferably the end portion comprises a standard gas fitting which may be either female or male according to the standard hose fittings used in the locality in which the dispensing apparatus is to be sold or used. Preferably the outlet end of the mainstream passageway is provided with a screw-thread complementary to the screwthread at the inlet end of the passageway and similarly comprising a standard gas fitting so as to be usable with standard hose and tap connections used in the locality in which the dispensing apparatus is to be sold or used.
The dispensing reservoir preferably at least partially surrounds the mainstream passageway between the inlet and the outlet end portions. In a particular preferred form, the reservoir is a substantially cylindrical re servoir vessel arranged coaxially with the mainstream passageway so as to encircle and thus completely surround the mainstream passageway. Preferably the dispensing reservoir is made of a similar material to the mainstream passageway such as a polycarbonate plastic and is welded to the mainstream passageway or otherwise cemented thereto, such as by the use of an adhesive material.
Thus in the particularly preferred form described above the mainstream passageway extends along the axis of the dispensing reservoir and through each end thereof defining a closed reservoir which completely surrounds that portion of the passageway within the dispensing reservoir.
The apparatus of the invention includes an interconnecting inlet passageway connecting the mainstream passageway and the reservoir whereby mainstream liquid may pass from the mainstream passageway to the reservoir and downstream thereof an outlet passageway also connecting the mainstream passageway and the reservoir to allow for emission of liquids from the reservoir to the passageway. In a preferred form the inlet and outlet passageways are provided by respective inlet and outlet orifices spaced apart along the length of the mainstream passageway within the dispensing reservoir. Thus the liquid mainstream may enter the reservoir upstream through the inlet orifice and the liquid from within the reservoir may enter the mainstream passageway downstream through the outlet orifice. It is presently considered that a pressure differential exists between the ori- fices spaced apart along the mainstream passageway, which differential, although small, is sufficient to cause the liquid to flow in the manner described but is not so great as to cause difficulty in the regulation of the rate of flow. The pressure differential may be changed by fitting a restriction in the mainstream between the inlet and outlet orifices. Preferably, the mainstream passageway tapers from the inlet and/or outlet end toward the restriction.
The apparatus of the present invention preferably includes control means to close and open one or both of the inlet or outlet passageways. Preferably the control means is provided by a screw-threaded tap valve preferably located over the outlet orifice and having a control knob rotated on the outside surface of the dispensing reservoir.
Preferably the tap valve includes a control shaft extending through the reservoir and a valve seat adapted to extend over the orifice to close it off in one position. A preferred screw-threaded connection between the control shaft and the housing for the dispensing reservoir allows for movement of the valve seat between a valve open and valve closed position and into intermediate positions of control by the simple turning of the control knob.
A filling opening may be provided in the housing for the dispensing reservoir preferably together with a screw-threaded cover cap.
The following description refers in more detail to the essential and optional features of the invention. To facilitate understanding of the invention, reference is made to the accompanying drawings where these features are illustrated in preferred form. It is to be understood however, that the essential and optional features of the invention are not limited to the specific forms of these features as shown in the drawings.
In the drawings: Fig. 1 is a longitudinal cross-section of a dispenser according to the invention; and Fig. 2 is a cross-section along the line Il-Il of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, the dispensing apparatus 1 comprises a mainstream passageway 2 for transmission of a liquid mainstream from inlet end 3 to outlet end 4; Mainstream passageway 2 extends along a tube 5 having screw-threaded end portions 6, 7.
Substantially cylindrical reservoir vessel 8 is arranged coaxially with passageway 2 to form reservoir 9 which completely surrounds passageway 2 from inlet end 3 to the upstream end of end portion 7.
Interconnecting inlet passageway 10 connects passageway 2 to reservoir 9 to allow liquid to pass from passageway 2 to reservoir 9. Downstream of inlet passageway 10, outlet passageway 11 also connects passageway 2 to reservoir 9 to allow liquid to pass from reservoir 9 to passageway 2.
Between passageways 10 and 11, tube 5 contains restriction 12. Mainstream passageway 2 tapers from inlet end 3 and from outlet end 4 toward restriction 12. Only a small degree of taper is required since a small difference in pressure between inlet passageway 10 and outlet passageway 11 has been found sufficient to cause liquid to flow from mainstream passageway 2 into reservoir 9, and from reservoir 9 into mainstream passageway 2. The actual degree of taper required will depend on such factors as the size of passageways 10 and 11, the respective flow rates and the bore of passageway 2. It is considered that those skilled in the art will be able to select appropriate dimensions to suit a particular application.
Screw-threaded tap valve 13 comprises control knob 14 rotated on the outside surface of vessel 8, control shaft 15 extending through reservoir 9 and valve seat 16 adapted to extend over the outlet of passageway 11 into reservoir 9. Tap valve 13 also includes sealing ring 17 to resist leakage of liquid from reservoir 9.
Cover cap 18 may be removed to allow access to reservoir 9.
In operation the liquid to be dispensed is placed into the dispensing reservoir through the filling opening until the reservoir is full. The cover cap is then firmly placed in position. To dispense the liquid from the reservoir mainstream liquid is passed through the mainstream passageway.
In view of the pressure drop in the passageway between the inlet and outlet orifices a small portion of the mainstream liquid will pass through the inlet orifice to the reservoir and a similar small proportion of the dipensing liquid will pass through the outlet orifice to the mainstream passageway to mix with the mainstream liquid and be dispensed with it. The quantity of dispensing liquid and the proportion of it mixed with the mainstream liquid is controllable by use of the control knob. If the control is moved to its closed position no dispensing liquid will be mixed. The proportion may be varied without interruption to the passage of mainstream liquid. It will be appreciated that the dispensing liquid within the reservoir will progressively be diluted with mainstream liquid so that at intervals it will be necessary to remove the cover cap, empty the reservoir through the filling opening and recharge it with dispensing liquid.
The present apparatus is particularly suitable for the dispensing of detergents and soap solutions into mainstream water where a regulation and control of the quanity dispensed with the mainstream fluid is desired. The apparatus may be connected at the outlet of a hose or water pipe for example, and one particularly suitable application has been found by connecting the inlet end of the passageway to a hose and the outlet end of the passageway to a cleaning brush for windows or cars for example.
However, it will be appreciated that the apparatus may be used in the plumbing connections to a shower or bath and in such areas as garden sprays and industrial sprays.
Various other minor modifications and alterations may be made as will be appreciated without departing from the scope of the present invention as defined in the accompanying claims.
