Abstract

155,209. Bates, L. W. Dec. 10, 1919, [Convention date]. Liquid fuel. - In making fuel consisting of solid carbonaceous particles stabilized in a liquid combustible, the coal, coke, lignite, &c. crushed between rolls 11 is lifted by a bucket conveyer 18 to a hopper 19 and, in quantities regulated by a valve in the outlet pipe is fed by a conveyer 22 to a mixer 26 to which the oil from a reservoir 27 and if desired peptizing or other stabilizing agent from a preferably steamjacketed tank 34 are admitted by pipes 28, 35. The mixture flows to a ball mill 39, and after being blended is discharged to a separating tank 40, to trap any coarse particles, and is forced by a pump 43 to a reservoir 46 preferably containing a heating coil 47. The outlet of the ball mill is preferably provided with a ribbed and ridged liner 51 to agitate the outflowing mixture and prevent the passage of coarse particles. An agitator and a heating coil may be arranged in the reservoir 46. The stabilizing agent may be a limeresin or other soap as described in Specification 165,418, creosote, water-gas tar, a liquid hydrocarbon immiscible with the liquid combustible, or alkali to combine with acid constituents of the oil or coal. A modified form of apparatus is also described in which the coal crushed by the rolls 11 falls into a ball mill, and is passed out through a fine screen to a mixer such as 26; the mixture is then passed through a second mill and discharged to a collecting tank. Stabilizing agents may be added to the coal, the oil, or to both. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) gas having peptizing action may be used to stabilize the suspension. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
