Abstract
154,675. Kennedy, G. F., and Sanders, H. A. Aug. 26, 1919. Mowing-machines.-A mowing-machine attachment for a tractor comprises a frame a pivotally connected to the rear axle of the tractor and having a reciprocating cutter l<2> extending across the front of the machine and one or more extension finger-bars u with reciprocating knives pivotally secured at the end of the main finger bar. The frame a, in addition to its pivotal connexion to the tractor axle, is connected bv links c and cross-ties d to the rear and the front of the tractor respectively and is supported upon spring-cushioned wheels e. The main finger-bar f is supported on the ground by shoes g, these shoes being provided with dividing-boards g<2> with inclined extensions g<3> which direct the cut grass to the centre of the track, and is connected to the front of the frame a by two spring-supported links h. A short-circuiting device j<1> for the ignition circuit of the motor of the tractor is provided and is operated when the mowing attachment engages an unyielding obstacle. The rear ends of the shoes are connected with the frame by springs k. The crank l, by which the knife l<2> is reciprocated, is driven from a vertical shaft which is driven from the power shaft o of the motor through a train of gearing comprising bevelgear o, o<2>, clutch q, rod r, sprocket gear r<3>, shaft r<4>, universal connexion r<5>, r<0>, and bevel-gear r<7>, r<8>. The angle between the finger bar f and the ground may be adjusted by levers t connected by wires t' to the ends of the shoes g. The extension finger-bars u are mounted at the ends of the finger-bar f on pivots u<1>. The knives v of the extension bars are driven from the shaft operating the main knife through bevel gear and laterally extending shafts, clutches being interposed which on the extension frames being raised to a vertical position are automatically thrown out. The extension bars may be raised to the vertical position by hand levers x<2> connected by wires x<1> to arms x extending from these bars. The knives are arranged to overlap to ensure a full swath being cut and swath-boards g<5> are pivoted on the extensions g<3>. A casing m<2> protects the crank t and its associated gear.
