Abstract
To generate a visible image of an optically opaque, spatially extended structure, for example a part of the interior of a human body, this is "illuminated" with a beam emitted by an ultrasonic unit (206) and focused by an acoustic lens (202). The intensities of the rays reflected by the structure and projected back to the ultrasonic unit (206) by the lens (202) are evaluated by imaging electronics to form an image of the structure examined, which appears on a display device (220). To image the spatially extended structure, discrete points (210) thereof are individually scanned. This is done by deflecting an inertialess beam (204) emitted by the ultrasonic unit (206). To deflect the beam, mechano-electronic or exclusively electronic means are used which operate at such a high scanning rate that real-time reproduction with good resolution is possible. <IMAGE>
